I love many kinds of music. Mostly use hardstyle for working out but I like rock, metal and other genres, like eurobeat. I'm also good with classical music or eg. Lord of the Rings music. I just reviewed my playlist and filtered out some of my favorite bands as I started making an effort to actually improve my spiritual life. As a former musician in the making, I know some of the psychological tricks that are used to short circuit our logic and control our emotions and it's scary how almost all of the top bands in all genres do it.

I love aggressive music. I love metal. Used to play in a band. Still listen to aggressive bands when I exercise. The only thing I changed was I don’t listen to bands that are overly anti-Christian for shock value. They usually aren’t very tasteful musically to me anyways.

Every work of art, including music, is inspired by a certain spirit. Music influences us, and depending on our own spiritual state, we are attracted to the music which reflects our own inner state, for better, or for worse. It acts as an external way of affirming our feelings. This way, some people can get stuck in their ways, by daily injecting themselves with a dose of the music infused with a certain spirit. This can make it hard for a person to break outside of certain mindsets and attitudes, clouding the voice of God and their conscience with beats that are taking them by the hand, and leading them down a path of feelings induced by the music.

When i reverted to Catholisism, for me, thrash metal was harder to give up than sins of the flesh. I continued to listen to instrumental metal in the gym for a while. But I personnally had to give it up completely because it was a serious source of temptation for me.

My suggestion would be to rotate out your music during gym sessions with some worship type music one day and the heavy metal another, rap another day, maybe even a sermon another day. I say these because #1 that will challenge your mental fortitude for hard/heavy lifts when you don't have the mental crutch of hard driving music but it will also help to re associate (re wire) your mind with idea that church (worship) music can uplift you in every circumstance, even in one previously devoid of that type of presence.

A few times I've tried listening to some Metallica albums while lifting at the gym, but the lyrics get me - really demonic stuff. Example: the song Sad But True. It's basically a song about a demon inside you. Or Fade To Black, a song about committing suicide. I can't rock out to this stuff anymore. Metal music in general, beyond Christian themed bands, tends to have the most biblical references. 90% of metal bands aren't satanic in nature. Even the ones who have Satanic references, typically use it to reference their inner demons, or don't take themselves seriously. Then there's the actual cultists.
I know when people think about the band Slayer, the first thing that crosses their mind is Satanic. One of their most popular songs is called South of Heaven. At first glance, people think hell, but, if you think about it, South of Heaven would be Earth.
As far as dealing with Christians who stereotype music, my uncle (who was a musician himself, and we lived together for a short time) once heard me hearing an extremely heavy metal band called Woe of Tyrants with growling vocals and he asked me, why are you listening to that filthy music. I replied by asking, you don't like it? He said it's demonic. I asked, you think so? They are a Christian band though. His face was priceless, and he just let out a whaaat?! I pulled up the lyrics and showed it to him. He didn't care for the growling. He ended up going through my albums and ended up liking a lot of the music I had. He grew up in the 70s and liked a lot of the bands of the era. I ended up showing him bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, and other heavy metal bands and built up and expanded his taste for music.

Exactly. I don't see how this is hard to get but maybe it's just because my favorite type of metal had more uplifting introspective lyrics that turned out to be Christian musicians. I wasn't listening to deicide or CC or infant annihilator before i was saved, so I can see if that's your type of metal it may be hard. But in metqlcore there's a ton of good music that even if not Christian doesn't have much swearing at all and lyrically isn't depressing or nihilistic. I've just recently been getting into Christian rap/hip hop

[Before I speak, let me acknowledge the humility which is evident in your posts. As one shortly to be reposed I find it full of hope.]
Am 75. DECADES ago was too much trapped in the occult. I associate "aggressive" music (no matter the genre) with that experience. Its discordant structure evokes - more than just memory; it is a gateway. (Certainly was for me.)
But an wise enough - after all these DECADES - not to imposes the outcome or residue of the experience on anyone else. Yet the question still remains. What about aggressive music gives it the structure of a pathway for something else? Can't easily dismiss the testimony of experience. [For me], do not expect that (occult) pathway (the structure of it) to be somehow deified - to be taken up into.
A sidenote: I associate the evocative nature of metal/hard music with that used at charismatic rock concerts. May be off base on that comparison.
Did not the Fathers have something to say about the evocative character of music.
To be fair, honest, I lsten to very little music - of any kind.

My humble opinion : we should avoid listening to music not because of it's genre, but because it induces us into an emotional state which "glues" us to this world. Music lifts up emotions and triggers mechanisms in the soul and the brain that we do not fully understand. What we know for sure is that it influences our behaviour. Why not listen to psaltic music while lifting?

    • @ShugaAnims
      @ShugaAnims 7 дней назад

But doesn't that apply to anything that induces strong emotions though? Not trying to argue just curious as to where exactly the line is. I do agree that certain songs can put you in a horrible mind state, but I don't see anything wrong with a song triggering strong emotions inherently. Just my thoughts.

Great perspective! I really appreciate this video. I've been a big heavy music nerd for the last 19 years of my life. I'd prefer to listen to Christian metal and hardcore when I can, but sonically, i love genres like Slam. I dont listen to heavy music for a message or lyrical content (i dont think most Slam bands even have lyrics 🤣 just gutturals). I've never felt like this music was a stumbling block for me or led me to sin. A lot of these bands are cringe and have extremely distasteful aestheics, so i curate accoridngly. An example would be Esophagus, their entire theme is based off of fhe movie Predator which is a lot cooler to me than some unnecessary, edgelord gore. Hardcore actually has a lot of positive messages, and, even though not always explicit, a lot of Christian lyrical themes. 💯☦️

Was super involved with heavy music for 10 years, played in a metal band as well.
You have a lot of good Christian metal bands out there, but by and large a lot of Metal bands just flat out don't like, or even hate Christians on a very deeply rooted level.
Even if the music isn't inherently evil lyrically, why would you want to support musicians that have a deep disdain for your Faith? Not all, obviously, and everyone is capable of change (Dave Mustaine comes to mind), but giving them your money or your time would seem ill advised.

    Objection!
Fr. Daniel Sysoev has repeatedly talked against going to theatre and listening to rock and metal music, and going partying. This is because on both of these occasions, it clouds your reasoning in some way. Losing your senses and going after spectacles is exactly the tactic of the slanderer. This is what the pagans were doing. Take a backseat at any metal concert or night club. Their faces and body movement when that "music" is playing are those of a possessed man. The most important thing in this metal music are not the lyrics or even the sound, but the rhythm, which helped people across the ages to lose their reasoning and conduct their pagan rituals. And at the time you mentioned the rowing rhythm, with a clip from Ben Hur, arguing that it helped them to stop thinking about the pain or anything else, doubly proves that this is the case. At that point I thought you were going to call it out for a pagan practice, especially since that rowing rhythm was employed by the pagan roman civilization, where paganism was a state religion.
Fr. Daniel Sysoev was also critical of doing sports professionally. There's nothing bad in doing sports, but doing sports professionally is not only destroying your temple (best athletes die young), but also speaks of your pride, because you want to be better than others. So being a juiced-up bodybuilder, or one of those entitled olympian athletes is bad for you on both levels.
Fr. Moses is in a different position as a professional powerlifter, as he is not looking towards earthly gratification and does not compete in Mr. Olympia events or anything, but many other people are not the same, and are prone to falling into such traps of the slanderer, especially when we go right near them. So it's best to avoid doing this altogether, or at least not to listen to metal like we are told to do because it's "kewl" and "based". I don't see Kyriakos Kapakoulak listening to metal or any music in his training videos, yet he still got immense respect from across the globe despite not looking for it purposefully. He is also an Orthodox Christian. And I myself usually listen to just Eurobeat since it's a way better music genre than metal or pop.

Let me explain something to you. I am a music composer with over 7,000 pieces across all genres and styles, holding a doctorate in musicology and music therapy.
Perhaps this priest has found an internal switch that allows him to avoid being affected by the frequencies and harmonies of metal music. But let me be clear: I’m not concerned with the lyrics unless they promote evil or harmful messages. What I want to emphasize is the melody, the sounds of the instruments, and the chord harmonies-these directly impact emotions and feelings, often beyond what words can convey. In many cases, music overrides lyrics.
Even if one listens only to metal music, it often invokes aggression, rebellion, and dark emotions. There is such a thing as "evil" music and "good" or contemplative music. Why do we say, “Oh, this music is emotional, joyful, sad, romantic, or energetic”? Because music inherently carries emotions-some of which can be aggressive or angry. The patterns and distorted guitar sounds in metal and hard rock make the brain respond with aggression and anger.
You may ask, “What if I want to feel motivated?” You can, but not through metal. Use epic cinematic soundtracks that evoke glory, power, and righteousness instead. If you want something more modern, regular house or techno music isn't as harmful, but it still tends to overstimulate the brain.
Songs like Chicago’s Glory of Love (from Karate Kid) and various Eastern compositions are made with a balance that positively affects the brain. So, please, do not listen to metal or hard rock, as these genres emit harmful frequencies. While they may make you feel euphoric temporarily, they disrupt your emotional balance. The priest you mentioned might unknowingly stabilize his brain through other practices during the day, but for the average person, linking time with Jesus to hip hop, rap, or metal music, which invokes negative emotions, is not advisable.
Instead, try trailer music, cinematic scores, or epic soundtracks. You'll feel at peace, at least. But for God’s sake, don’t combine lyrics about Jesus with metal, hard rock, or rap. The syncopated beats and musical harmonies can evoke negative emotions that overpower any spiritual message in the lyrics.
In songs, the impact of music vs. lyrics is significant-music can account for as much as 70-75% of what we feel, even when the lyrics speak about Jesus. While this approach may work for the priest, it could be harmful to 95% of people.

You sound like a real fun person…. If music or “frequencies” has that much of an effect on you then I think you’re gonna have a real rough time holding your consciousness together after death (so you better hope that the Lord does it for you). Metal has had far too much of a positive impact on millions of lives for it to be strictly from the devil. Metal can evoke a wide range of emotions, all of em in fact according to the person. Metal is good, music is good; all good things come from God. The devil cannot create, he can only pervert.

@@SoutheastKy_Bard If you are not aware, that is exactly how the slanderer operates. For the bulk of the world, he just gets them into the pits of hades. But for the rebellious kind, he does the following - he gives you something objectively bad and then gives you an "alternative" that is between that bad stuff and the good things. It's like that everywhere - he shows you the objectively bad punk or pop music, then he gives you the "ear candies" like metal, rock, or even some classical music, which was also famously composed by a fair number of people who claimed they were visited by the devil - meaning that they also either practiced something, or just fell into some prelest.
It's like that everywhere - instead of spilling the beans to you about the existence of bad and good, like the pagan religions and Orthodox Christianity, he shows you the bad ones first and then the "alternatives", such as the protestant and the neo-protestant churches. You know how it goes - you join the protestant church, then most if not all the passions miraculously disappear, making a man think that he made the right choice and this is exactly where God wants him to be. In reality, that is simply the slanderer withdrawing his temptation efforts from you, because he got you where he wants you to be, and to not question anything until you die. The second you go on the path to Orthodoxy, where there is the highest chance of salvation, of him losing the "rights" to take your soul into hades, all the passions come rushing back, and the various obstacles are being put on your path, making you feel like Orthodoxy is actually bad and you are betraying God somehow. Unfortunately for the slanderer, he is stupid, as he plays right into Christ's hand, since the path to salvation is narrow and, most importantly, thorny, so the people who actually read the Gospel would know that this is the Right path.

It seems that this is an example of people justifying their behavior. A G note is nothing same as a piece of meat but ALL musicians openly agree that the notes (not the words but he notes) are arranged in such a way so as to bring out a particular emotion. Metal music (not the words but the music) is designed to bring out aggression. To think that it won't affect you negatively over time is ridiculous. Using some form of "speed" like cocaine may not do anything negatively the first few times you do it but over time it will of necessity affect you negatively.
