@@mpkblydspkbl745, understood. Even Harvard graduates have to back the bragging rights up with results. I agree with Bianca but I still say we should find licensed cosmetologist who can make this happen. Girl you nailed it on so many levels…especially the cost for curly cuts👏🏽 I literally get my hair cut once a year because it’s so damn expensive. Once it grows out I have to deal with the unevenness or try snipping off the ends myself because I can’t afford the maintenance. I wish we could pamper ourselves regularly at the salon like so many others do but I’d have to get a part-time job just to upkeep my hair appointments. Equality is definitely warranted in the hair community and you spoke truth today, Bianca…we thank you‼️

I felt bad leaving my stylist because I had been going to him for 20+ years, including when I used to straighten my hair. But once I went curly, he had no idea what to do with me. I had to bring my own products, my own curly brush, and my own jersey cotton towel, and all he did was wash it and cut it. And because he washed it with non-curly shampoo, my hair still didn't feel great when I left, AFTER I HAD TO STYLE IT. What in the holy hell. Then Covid hit, and I never went back.

The stories I hear from my coaching clients about their experiences are maddening. This is one reason I started offering them even though I’m not a “certified stylist.”
Where does change even begin? We have to start increasing the demand by asking for curl experienced stylist for them to even realize they need to improve their education.

As a professional licensed hair stylist who specializes in curly/natural hair your video speaks to my SOUL!!!! I agree that if you can't work with ALL textures you can't call/consider yourself to be a professional hairstylist. I'm licensed in Texas, and in school we were not required or given proper instruction on how to do curly/natural hair (and I hated that it was referred to as "textured" hair). The only classes on curly/natural hair (which were only about 3-4 classes during a whole year) was how to tame or straighten the hair to suit euro-centric standards. Right now only Louisiana, Minnesota, Connecticut, and New York require cosmetology schools to include it the curriculum.
This is why I'm so passionate about the services I provide to my clients. Growing up it was so hard to care for and style my curls. It wasn't until I was almost 30 that I finally was able to figure it out and get a cut without having to straighten my hair. Nothing makes me happier than educating my clients and having them fall in love with their natural hair. Now, I will say when it comes to the pricing for cuts, for me it's not so much the scarcity of my services, but because of the time and cost of products.

This is why I don’t like going to a stylist., I went in August for the first time in years to get a hair cut and of course she blew out my hair and chopped off way too much. AFTER I told her my hair has massive shrinkage. They don’t listen and don’t care. Then she proceeds to style me with mousse and tried to fluff out my hair and said I wanted volume. I then told her I hated volume and never use mousse. She said why didn’t you tell me, BC YOU DIDN’T ASK.

The hairstylist from my culture (Dominican Republic) do not specialize in curly, coily, kinky hair, although a vast majority of our population has these textures. Growing up i was always told I had “bad hair”, for which the solution was always a relaxer. Once I learned to care for my own hair, my hair has thrived. Now i go back and forth between my curls and straight hair and have not been to a professional in years. I’ve learned to trim my hair as well.

💯 right on. I have different curl patterns and it's frustrating. I literally had a stylist complain I had so much hair and thick. Like she was exhausted and it was just a trim. 🙄 I used to perm my hair in the 80s just to get a uniform pattern. I stopped when I got pregnant. I'm 59, and stopped dying my hair years ago. It's now about being gentle and acceptance due to my sensitive skin rebelling. Gray curly hair has its own complexities. I don't like getting cuts or trims, even with a sweet stylist. I just try to keep ends from frizzing. And as you age, you have to constantly adjust. And I have educate myself with channels like yours.

Thank you for this…and say it louder for the people in the back. A black stylist doesn’t mean they know how to do curly hair.My stylist went out of the country and I needed my hair done. I went to another black stylist….an actual friend of hers…that was trained at the same time as she and who actually worked in a salon to together at a point….so I naively thought I could trust her. Welp I was wrong. She cut my hair and the cut looked like a staircase. It was horrible. When my stylist returned and saw the cut she was furious. When I told her who did she was mortified. She outright said she should know that you can’t cut curly hair like you cut straight hair and and said she would talk to her when she has a cooler head as to not upset her friend but to point her in the right direction. Now, when my stylist is going out of the country my hair goes into box braids for a month until she returns. It’s ridiculous that I have to plan my hair care around my stylist’s life because I can trust others to do it. So thank you for this video.

Totally agree!!! The fact is, he majority of the world has textured hair ( wavy, kinky, curly). This means every cosmetology school should require a full curriculum on textured hair care and styling. We need a network of rated, tried and tested natural haircare professionals; organized by state and area of specialty. ( i.e. braids, 2 strand twists, loose curly cuts, tighter curly cuts, color on curly hair, etc.) Let’s not even get into the attitudes regarding, having to "beat, fry, and straighten" our hair into "submission." We should be able to wear our hair curly, straight, twisted, whatever way we want and not be judged for it. Thanks BiancaRenee.❤

YES to EVERYTHING you said. My senior prom 1992, I left the salon, drove home crying and re-washed my hair. Went to prom in my natural curly self-styled pineapple “up-do.” I also have salon chair muteness and stopped paying stylists for sub standard treatment and TERRIBLE cuts more than 20 years ago when I began to cut my own hair. It became a huge red flag to me every time I sat in a salon chair and the stylist would ask “do you ever wear your hair straight?” I knew instantly that stylist had NO idea how to handle curly hair and wanted to give me a straight cut and a blowout which would never look good after I wash and style curly at home. I decided to treat myself and I went to a great curl specialist 6-7 years ago and agree with you that they are educating and such but yeah…I do NOT have $150-$200 to spend on a cut so I continue to do my hair myself after that one visit…just didn’t feel a value in it personally. I have learned more from you and others I follow than I did from that specialist. Thank you for everything you do for us! ❤🫶🏻🙌🏻💕

I haven’t stepped in a salon for my own haircut or style in 6-7 years. Partly because they are anti-long hair (give them an inch and they take off 7, no JOKE), partly because they have no idea how to manage even WAVY hair. It’s so much worse for the curlier textures. And this was on top of having been rudely handled by condescending stylists who detested me for not knowing how to manage waves they themselves were clueless on!!! If professionals can’t act and perform professionally, then they are not professionals period.

GIRL!!!!! Let's keep going on this!!! When I moved to Boston and looked for a curly hair salon I almost had a heart attack. A 30 mins appointment is $100 minimum!!!! I even considered going to a regular salon, but then I remembered that none of them know how to deal with curly hair. Mind you I am 2c-3a curly girl, and I haven't been able to trust anyone who isn't a curly hair specialist. Short story: came across with this IG account of a hair salon, they do a beautiful job with color. They posted a video of a curly, who happened to be in my school so I know what her hair looks like... They colored it, beautifully! BUT when it came to style it I grinned! Even the stylist, who was the salon owner, looked uncomfortable, and I thought, how come none of the 'professional hair stylists' know how to do at least the basics on curly hair?!
To end my rant I wanna say that I used to get trims every 3-4 months because that's what my hair needs, now I have to pull it up to 6-8 months which is when I get to go to PR and can see my stylist.

I’ve learned how to style from videos but I can’t get a good shape anywhere. I just use Manes by Mel videos to cut my hair now. It’s not exactly what I want but it’s better than any cut I’ve ever gotten.
Also, I’ve always had a picture in my head that I should feel seen and heard when I go to a salon. And after spending tons of money, I should feel and look beautiful when I leave. It’s never the case. When the stylist styles my hair, I usually look and feel ugly and resent having to pay. Now I just get the roots touched up and leave the salon with wet hair.

I never once walked out of a salon properly styled so could never go out directly after an appointment. You pay all that money just to go home and restyle. My current stylist went to NYC to learn the Diva cut on her own. I will also mention that in a Canadian city of over a million people, we one have one curly hair salon with only 2 stylists. Absolutely! I just did it three weeks ago! I needed my hair colored and wanted my ends trimmed without having to drive 6 hours to a curly hair specialist. I have been to this person and she knows how to comb through my hair without hurting me, she knows what products to use and even has implemented some of these products for use and purchase in a predominately white salon. Did I mention that she is white with biracial kids? She is not great with styling my hair but tells me that before I sit in the chair. She also tries by watching videos and asking questions. I always am prepared to either style my own hair after the service or do it again when I get home before going anywhere else in public. Will I continue to go to her? Yes , I will because she tries! I totally agree that this is something that needs to be taught before getting your professional license.

As a retired hairstylist I completely agree. Unfortunately what you’re looking at is a systemic issue. Our licenses, which do expire btw, are issued by the state government. So every school has a curriculum they are required to follow as set down, by the state board. In order for the curriculums to start changing, the state boards must decide to change them. It’s a state by state systematic issue, that will only be fixed when enough money is thrown at the problem.
That being said, please don’t hide your feelings from your stylist. You’re paying for a service, and we can’t fix a problem we don’t know is there. Sure don’t be a jerk, but the best learning experience I’ve ever gotten was when my client said, I would really prefer if we tried this instead. Your being happy with the service, is more important than then your stylist liking the service.

Interesting because the only woman who will do my hair in a shop full of caucasian women is an Asian woman. The rest of them refuse to touch me. She will wash and cut it ( my hair is wavy, I'm bi racial kinda 3a,b) or sometimes I blow it out before I come. The others will cut it if I straighten it

I am man. I have mainly 3B curl type. I've lost most faith in hair salons in Southern California. I dont know how many times I've been in a hair salon and/or barber chair, and they take a FINE toothed comb and scissors while examining my hair shimmying left and right like I'm a damn science project...
So, wait, I'll ask again. Do you know how to cut curly hair?
...Uh, yea. Fah sho man, I gotchu.
So, why don't I SEE or FEEL confidence coming from you?
    ...

I totally agree with you! This is ridiculous! It can be frustrating when professional hairstylists lack knowledge about curly hair, especially considering the unique care and techniques required to maintain and style it properly. Curly hair varies in texture, curl pattern, and needs, and not having expertise in these areas can lead to damaging practices or unsatisfactory results. It highlights a gap in cosmetology education, which sometimes prioritizes straight hair techniques over textured hair. Ideally, all hairstylists should be trained in the diverse range of hair types so they can provide the best service for all clients. Inclusivity in beauty services is key, especially as more people embrace their natural curls.

So true! I still have a love/hate relationship with my curly hair but try to feel more neutral about it. One of the reasons I wish I had straight hair is because I could just walk into any professional salon and know I'd get a good haircut. I wouldn't have to do all this research, digging for the stylists work, or asking around. It's mentally exhausted to the point where I just don't even want to get my hair cut anymore. I'd rather just ask my mom to give me a trim

I live in Atlanta, GA and here there is a new trend of Head Spas, where you go and get a hair/scalp treatment that focalizes on massaging and relaxation. Out of all the salons that have opened up, I have not seen one tailor to curly hair aftercare. The procedure once the head spa is completed, there is a room where there is a mirror and blow dryer. The norm is for clients to "blow dry" their hair so that they don't leave with wet hair. If us curly girls use only a blow dryer for the aftercare.... we would be lookin A HOT MESS walking out..... Their pages will intentionally mentioned that they also cater to curly girls but their after care says quite the opposite. The idea sounds amazing to get a head massage but I refuse to give any of them my money if the expectation is for me to bring in my own hair products and do it myself after.... Had to rant. Your rant inspired my rant that hadn't been vocalized yet. I hope others have noticed what I'm noticing because it's not right. Anyway, love you Bianca and thank you for speaking out on these issues that all of us have either experienced or noticed!

I live in Atlanta too and saw an ad for one yesterday. I immediately went to the FAQs because I was like “what do they do with your hair afterwards?” And of course they said they just blow dry. What really got me was them saying depending on how curly or could your hair is, the don’t recommend the scalp treatments because it will lead to your hair being tangled but my question is, why not just detangle May hair once you’re done with the scalp massage? And maybe have an option to just braid my hair or something if I don’t want it blown out. It’s like damn, just because I have curly or coil hair I can’t enjoy this form or self care smh.

AMEN! I have been natural for over 20 years and it has been a roller-coaster. Everything from the "snatching" as they did not know how to detangle, to not using enough conditioner, suggesting we relax it "just a bit to loosen the curl", etc. Many black stylists used products that were too strong for my 3C curls. I've had months where I did not even want to try to fix my hair, because it needed time to heal from the last appointment. You and Mell changed my life with knowledge, products, and empowerment. Have been using the same stylist for years. She is a white lady, working for Aveda salons, that paid to take a Ouidad course years ago. Her cuts are good, but styling is just okay. Nice thing is she is open to learning, so I go to most appointments with a new brush or product. Always have a hair clip, scarf, and gel with me...just in case. Often have left with wet hair, simply because it was easier. An Aveda session has never been cheap, so it would be nice to have it look nice for at least a few days. I remember the days when I had relaxed hair and left the salon feeling pretty.

I'm so close to learning how to cut my own hair. The cuts I've had with curly hair stylists have mostly been fine but they always assume every curly or wavy haired person needs a TON of moisture. But my virgin hair loves protein and is really easily over moisturized so it always takes multiple washes to get it back to normal. I'm over it

I have tried just going to salons for treatments and trims for a long....... time and just styling it on my own because I was tired of going to the salon and getting home and looking like a cheapet. I finally realized I had to figure out how to treat and style my hair myself when I got pregnant with my daughter and thought I cant have her deal with the same issues. Thanks to You tubers like you (love your channel!!) I have learned so... much that know I have been able to pass on my knowledge to others. It took me a long time to love my hair and I wanted her to know her hair is beautiful too. Many of these stylists only know how to style and has no clue how to take care of hair especially curly tight coiled textured hair. It is truly sad to know that product lines have grown so much buy the hair professionals have not.

YES THIS. Also - what on earth is with professional hairstylists claiming they are a ‘curly stylist’ after taking a single diva curl workshop. I had a curly hairstylist LOAD my hair up with leave in conditioner and hairspray - my fine 2c hair was plastered to my scalp, hard, dry ; yet greasy at the same time. 175.00 for a REGULAR long layered cut and this styling l - and i had to shower when I got home🙃. When I was in college I tried a regular salon a couple times and it went terribly so, since I'm biracial and have similar hair to yours I thought I'd try a black salon. You are so right just because they're black does not mean they know how to style curly hair. Not only did they cut way too much hair off but it was styled so poorly. The closest I've ever had my hair done well was one diva curl stylist and not even all of them are good. I just trim and style my own hair now.

It’s honestly worse than you think 😢
I’m a cosmetology instructor and I’ve taught on all types of hair but it’s super unfortunate because it’s not a requirement in the state of California for the students to even touch a curly client before graduating. I’ve gotten in trouble from the school directors before for “making” a student work on a curly hair client because it made her anxious even though I was mainly doing the client, the student was merely being guided as she assisted me. In the state of California -since Covid - it is no longer required for any cosmetology students to take a hands on test. They just need to pass a written exam after they have graduated. They also don’t need to do well on any clients of doll heads throughout the duration of school (depending on the school-because they are privately owned) they are only required to attempt it and not miss any steps. For example they are tested on a blow out but the finished product is not considered.. they just need to do all the steps and demonstrate safety and take precautions to protect the client. It’s really sad. It drives me crazy.

    • @vanessajlT
      @vanessajlT 3 месяца назад

Just to clarify; there is no practical hands on licensing exam anymore, only a written exam. There are practical hands-on tests for things such as a manicure, updo, blow out, color retouch, relaxer etc but they are only graded on doing the steps and being safe. Not graded on the outcome
