  • It seems both JVC NZ7 (laser) and JVC NX5 (bulb) use PWM for brightness control as detected in this iPhone 11 video of the two projectors compared side by side - video taken with 240FPS slow motion on original source.

Thanks Jonathan, I'm a JVC dealer and Epson dealer contemplating between Epson LS12000 Laser and JVC NZ7 for double the price retail and wholesale for my home showroom. I was tempted to get closeout NX5, and now I'm very glad I did not bc I have not seen them side by side until now.
Truly appreciate your answers in Youthman's thread. Q4- do you know if your contact in Topeka has any of the JBL CBT 70J-1 remaining of the 34 he had? doubtful I know bc it's been a few years, but new to me ;-)
have a great weekend, you give me so much excitement, been lurking you on AVS lol, did read your comments on all same speaker and can't disagree sonically. Wife is hoping for round to fit inside coffered ceilings. stay tuned ....

He long ago sold them. Keep in mind that the NX5 has 2500 hours on it, and the NZ7 only had 130 hours. The NX5 would be better suited for the compare with a new bulb, but the NZ7 will be brighter no matter what. Good luck in your decisions. I’m going to be selling my NZ7 and buying a LS12000. The PWM on the JVC bothers my eyes, and the LS12000 doesn’t use PWM. If I get a LS12000, I’ll do an A/B compare with it and the NZ7.

Agreed, yes 20,000 hour laser life vs the hamster wheel of regularly replacing bulbs definitely tilts me towards Laser, ...but the PWM elicits fears of the dreaded DLP rainbow effect that's plagued me for 2 decades.
Unfortunately my distributor, who used to have showroom model has moved to warehouse model, so I've not been able to critically lay my eyes on JVC NZ7 eShift 8k for extended period of time (sans trade shows, albeit controlled conditions).
I defer to your real-world, "boots on the ground", experiences, and would love it if you review both the Epson LS120000 laser vs the JVC NZ7 laser.
Admittedly I was blindly ready to install NZ7 as showroom projector (though Epson will likely sell much better) and am glad you're not afraid to air your concerns with PWM effect, which the LS12000 skirts.
I'm not opposed to offering you wholesale pricing on anything I have access to,, or possible proj trade LS12000 plus cash for N7 (LS12k backordered currently). note: if I also see excessive PWM I'll just move JVC NZ7 and backfill LS12k to showroom.
Feel free to DM me to take discussion offline, or continue on your channel.
      Best regards,
      HT Jamie

Does the increase in brightness destroy the black levels though?

Not at all. JVC's dim dark content is very comparable between the RS2100 and the NX5. The extra brightness however is very desirable.

Brightness is substantially better on the Z. I wonder how much brighter it would be than my NX7?

With and new bulb and calibrated the Epson would be only slightly brighter. The Epson calibrated is about 2100 lumens. But the JVC bulb won’t stay that bright for very long. In 2500 hours of high bulb a JVC NX5 I tested recently with the factory bulb was only ~450 lumens. We popped in a new knock off bulb and it jumped to 1500 lumens with no other changes.
