Doc Martens had its own version of the thick rubber lug sole. I don't understand why that can't be marketed today instead of the shallow vinyl sole that wears out quickly.
They are an excellent quality. I have never managed to wear mine down in 15 years. The steel shank makes boots too cold to wear in winter. It conducts cold.

I have a pair of DMs and have had a few pairs of Timberlands 6 inch Premiums over the years. The Timberlands definitely feel much more heavy duty and versatile than the DMs and can double up as hiking boots if necessary. The first part to give up on all pairs of Timberlands I've had has been the leather behind the heel which wears away completely after a few years, thankfully this doesn't seem to have a huge impact on the comfort though so I can carry on using them. I am very fond of my DMs though, I bought them in 2013, they're made from very soft leather (not the normal shiny DM leather) and they feel like putting on an old pair of slippers. The soles are worn smooth though, so anything other than pavement and they get a bit slippery! I'd love to see CAT Colorado boots cut in half, as I also have a couple of pairs of those and they've lasted well and are very comfortable so it'd be very interesting to see what's inside.
I have both types of shoes, so I can share personal impressions. In appearance, the shoes of Dr. Martens look more suitable for urban wear, but in terms of quality they really give way. Also, if the weather is too cold, don't expect your feet to be warm. Regarding Timberlands, even after the first touch, it is felt that these shoes are healthier and of better quality and more solid than Dr. Martens. This difference is felt even by people who are not specialists without having to cut. But, this is normal, considering that Timberlands is a work shoe for builders and loggers. So if you're trying to look sleek in an urban setting, Timberlands won't help you make that happen. If you just want a strong and hopeful shoe, then this is the right choice.
Timberlands are pretty dope tho still for regular wear. You can throw them on to a regular pair of jeans hoody and puffer much easier than dr Martens. Like doc martens is more for a anesthetic or punk look whereas timbs are for everyday wear
Totally agreed with this vid. Docs are sexy, more recognizable, and I get more compliments when I wear them, but tims imo are so much more comfortable, better made, and more durable. If you need something with good traction, too, tims have a clear advantage here as well.
Thanks for sharing the side by side review of these boots, Weston. It is a great way for us to evaluate which things to consider or prioritize before purchasing a pair of boot. Also, the content of your channel is very educational and informative. Back then I never cared about what a shank is for or what it is hahaha! More power to you, mate!
I have whites lace to toe loggers , redwing moc toe , 877, 875 , never thought i would appreciate the timberland premium as much as i do , its underrated it works great in slush snow and rain , and my toes never get as damp and in the other boots , I never would of thought of getting a pair , however they surprised the crap out of me.
I wear both. Timberland's are not really my style, but I have never found anything else that keeps my feet as warm and dry in our brutal east coast winters. They also have great customer service, I had one that cracked on the bottom and called the company, they sent me a new pair instantly. Wearing Docs in the ice and snow is a death wish, but I can't say Iv'e had any complaints about the shank, or lack thereof. Mine have held up well, but I do use an insole with all my boots.
Great video! I have a bunch of Tim's about 15 years old in various colors. A couple even made in USA. I've been less impressed with them over time instead of more impressed as I'd hoped. (If I could figure out how to stretch them a half size it would probably help) Recently I've started buying Doc's. Mostly about 30yr old MIE ones in real good condition. I'm liking the Doc's more. If wearing boot cut jeans over them there really isn't the biggest difference besides the yellow string so I don't see them as being so different as others do.
Shout out from a newbie all the way from England. I'm glad I've come across your video, this has opened my eyes as I've been thinking of getting some Dr Martens instead of the designer Chelsea boots that are currently trending. I think I'll save my hard earned cash instead. Besides, we're now working from home, can't socialise & might as well invest in comfortable slippers. Thanks for the review.......
I think that the black Timberlands are a good comparison but he has the original color ones. It’s different if you’re gonna compare “styles” related to “age” though. Younger kids just like Doc Martin’s bc it’s fashionable.
omisan771 I wear my Doc Martens for nostalgia and Timberlands are just construction boots that aren’t worth the price for my husband to destroy every 4 months. Fashion is a whole different thing and it’s fun to learn stuff and watch Toaster walk around in his harness 🐱🐱❄️😊
@@kodokushiHill there's a big difference, welt is different, solovair has a shank, soles are much thicker and in my experience the soles seem to last almost twice as long.
Doc's used to have a solid rubber sole back in the 80s but they were certainly heavier as well. Also I don't know if they still do but they used to have a lifetime guarantee on the sole. If you somehow managed to wear them out you could send them in (just pay the shipping) and they would resole them for free.
thank you so much for this informative video, really appreciate it. I was thinking about bying a pair of Doc Martens but thanks to you decided against it. Now I've got a pair of bloodstones.
Your efforts to enlighten us are very much appreciated, having an insight to how boots are constructed is invaluable. As a hunter and outdoors person boots are a very important piece of kit, my chosen hunting boot is the Meindl Douvre Extreme, I have other Meindl boots and find them all comfortable, hard wearing and waterproof. I would be interested in seeing you dismantle them and compare to other hunting boots in the future. 👍👍👍
Hey ! Working man bloke here, i work in construction. You should do these kind of thing on working boots, timberland, steel, cheap walmart boots. Mine keeps breaking , sometimes i even buy 2 pairs a years... and i dont go for the cheap ones, i always pays in exces of 200. I think that kind of content would "genuinely" help a lots off people and bring some more attention on this chanel witch it deserve. Have a great day! Sorry for my english , not my native language. (See the pun!)
Kinda bummed out that I bought my first pair of Dr Martens and a month later I found your channel, got them at a serious discount though. Any chance of doing Corcoran jump boots? They look like a good option for a dress-y boot that will last a good time if they're what is advertised
I''ve worn both and found the Tims to be more durable , just didn't like the appearance as well as Docs . I really like the comparison videos , keep 'em coming. I'm ready to buy a new pair of quality boots so will be watching to see what I learn from them.
Then try Solovair. They used to make Doc Martens before the brand went all fashoinista. Build quality looks superior to even the Made in England Docs. Rose Anvil compared the two and the Solovair was better.
I have actually had a pair of DM shoes where the sole has split just before the heel, which suggests your point about the shank is correct. In the UK we have a major chain of cobblers that can resole DMs, but the cost doesn’t really make it worth it. They seem to the only footwear where Goodyear welting has no advantage.
I literally just bought two pairs of Timberland Nellie Chukka waterproof boots, black and wheat nubuck. Cost me a fortune! But I'm happy, especially after watching this review.
Phil Meeks I tried to bend the sole (like in one of the videos) while actually wearing my docs, and I couldn't. The only advantage of a shank for me is walking on some very uneven ground (which most people don't).
Phil Meeks yeah, but I don't shovel or climb ladders 🤷🏼♂️ Of course, having a shank would be better in case you have to do those things, but most people wear those boots as a part of their casual outfit.
I bought a couple pairs of Levi's leather boots earlier this year, the "Jax" and "Emerson". Given the price, I bought them under the assumption that they'd be poor man's timbs, but they're fiendishly comfortable and seem to be holding up well. It would be interesting to see them as a cross comparison to the Timberland or Doc Marten, in a sense of what you would get across different mass-market boots in a higher vs lower price point.
I found the same with that particular sole pattern on the Docs - and disliked them enough I will never buy them again if they have that sole. Very very thin and the tread (or lack thereof) fills very easy with mud/dirt/snow. Docs a few years back had a similar star/workboot tread on them like the Timberlands and they were great
Love your video! Thank you for doing the review and explanation of these two boots! Can you please also do a review on Palladium? Definitely would love to see it!!
Thank you for all these great videos. In this case I don’t think you compared the right boots. You should have compared the Tim’s to a pair of DM Cappers or modern waterproof ones. Those DMs are more of a fashion boot not a workwear boot.
You should do a video on leather repair kits! I just bought a Fortivo leather repair kit I’m not sure how well this is gonna work! Al it of people want to repair their older shoes and keep them working
I own both and I agree with the video, Dr Martens are really soft, light and easier to break in but the leather doesn't feel great and doesn't have support on the other hand Timberlands are heavier but stronger, better sole and insert, insulated, it has a shank and it is harder to break in, the thing is that when you break in a Timberland boot, it is a lot more comfortable than Docs. I love both but Timberlands are better quality. You also have to think about their original purpose when they came out, Dr Martens was a comfortable boot to help with foot pain and was looking to be lightweight for walking on the other hand, Timberlands were created for construction workers in the northeast so of course they have to be stronger and last longer. And Docs are more expensive too.
Dear Rose, thank you so much for your indept reviews! Solovair, Docs MIE, and Timberland are literally my life. It's good to see the exposure of the boots despite the hurt for cutting these beauties in half. For my work I have to wear Haix boots. These Haix boots come in different specs, depending for what are they used for (Firefighters, Police, SWAT, Emergency Services, Paramedics and Army,etc.). I have a Haix Firefighters Pro boot, very comfy, heavy boot, with a lots of safety specs Haix claimed to be on the particular boot. They're not kinda cheap, and very high quality. I'm sooo curious to see what's going inside the Haix boots. Hope you can expose them too some day! I'll be delighted! And give that lovely cat a big hug, the cat makes it all less painful to watch tho!
Please do the Panama Jack boots vs Timberland boots for examply. But really i wore Timberlands but sold them because i didnt like the fit with my small toe. I bought two pairs of Panama Jack boots with Nappa Leather and love them.
This video started my journey. By showing WHY my timberlands had lasted 5+ years, it made me trust Weston. That lead to me buying a pair of red wing iron rangers. Then some Thursday sneakers. Finally, I saved enough money for a pair of nick's handmade boots. I have a hard time imagining better boots. Anyone new to quality footwear, you should trust Weston(mr Rose Anvil). His channel is zero bullshit and 99% quality focus.
Hi there, I'm finding your videos fascinating... As a long time DM wearer, growing up in London in the 70's, these were our go to boots, cheap (at the time) hard wearing and cool... The generally wore well, but the usual place mine went is along the top of the welt, by the big toe area.. the leather always gave out there...and the boots leaked, usually after about 2 years of every day use.... (I've had probably 7 or 8 pairs over the years...) Fast forward to the 90's and I got my first pair of Timberlands in Paris... The last really well.. 10 or years or every day wear.. The split as have all my subsequent boots at the toe, where the sole came away from the welt.. no amount of glueing even as a shoes repair place prolonged the life for very long... Every pair I'd had has had the same or similar sole issue, we are talking the premiums here.. The Urethane comes away from the welt some place.. Generally good boots, but next pair will probably be Blundstones...
Great quality video. Always owned DM’s before but never Timbs. Time to upgrade. Any bikers here use Timbs for riding? Just got into bikes recently, considering getting these.
Hey ! Thank you so much for this video !! Allows to see clearly where money goes, and beyond marketing :) Personnaly, I would love to see a comparison between these timbs and the caterpillar colorado, which seem very similar !! Thanks and all the best !!
I grew up in the UK wearing Doc's, during the 70's & 80's I think they are the most comfortable of all the boots out there. In fact I still wear their shoes. From a practicle point (from experience) the Timberlands are the better boot, warmer, dryer and harder wearing. That said, I will always default to the Doc's. Doc's are for life, not just for Christmas :)
love the amount of work you do on this channel, found you looking for the best boot. Amazing video, you breakdown all the different parts of the boot in so many ways but still keep it easy to understand for newbs like me. only thing i would say is possibly something that could be corrected is giving the win to dr.martens for the goodyear welt when timberland doesn't even have one.
@@RoxyCherryRozy That's a shame to hear, I have had the same 4 pairs for the last 6 years, and I bought them used and wear them daily. I'd hate to see New Rock go the Dr. Marten route and outsource or cut important corners on their boots just to save margins. I should see if I can't get a new pair of NR boots to see if there are any glaring quality differences.
I have 2 Timberland boots. One is from 1999 and the other is 2004. Still look brand new and going to replace the 1999 sole because already hard. 2004 also going to get the sole stitch up. Both getting the soles upgrade.

7:00 Out of curiosity, could you look at Altberg? (www.altberg.co.uk/). They are UK made (although subcontract some production to Italy) walking boots, & probably the best I've ever owned. However they appear to be majority glued construction, however offer a resole service across all of their model line, I am wondering how they do this? They do have a full factory in Yorkshire where they do their resoles, I imagine they may use a machine to do it rather than just a cobbler picking away the stitches by hand.
I love comfort shoes 👞 my self, I didn't even know much witch is better but the end I learned so much now is easier to different what type of quality is better to go on the long run....👍👍great content..love to see more of this video's....
Timbs: no need to break in, do not hurt your foot, can be used for hiking pretty severe trails(I've done 6hs straight in them just fine, and hiked 2 to 3hs in them everyday over 10days in New Zealand), more of an outdoor vibe for your outfit, stains easier. Docs: absolutelly needs to be broken in with mink oil( thanks for the tips, Weston), otherwise they will destroy your ankles, cannot be used for hiking seriously, easier to clean and go great in an office casual outfit.
I was looking for a black boot. Didn’t want to buy docs so I thought I would get Solovairs but you can’t get solovairs on Klarna because I can’t afford 185 quid out right. The I saw it... black premium timbies on sale for £120 3 interest free payments of £40 not bad for a pair of premium boots

Like doc martens is more for a anesthetic or punk look whereas timbs are for everyday wear
nice comparison! My sister really swears by Doc's since she has a standing profession and those shoes can last her all day!
I would never in my life buy either of these boots but I love watching these videos. I have the whites perry and the bullruns currently.
I have whites lace to toe loggers , redwing moc toe , 877, 875 , never thought i would appreciate the timberland premium as much as i do , its underrated it works great in slush snow and rain , and my toes never get as damp and in the other boots , I never would of thought of getting a pair , however they surprised the crap out of me.
your whats inside videos helped me choose to choose Timberland Boots.
Thank you and keep making these.

oh..oh my
I’d really like to see reviews on “luxury” branded wallets and belts like Louis Vuitton and Gucci
(If I could figure out how to stretch them a half size it would probably help)
Recently I've started buying Doc's. Mostly about 30yr old MIE ones in real good condition.
I'm liking the Doc's more. If wearing boot cut jeans over them there really isn't the biggest difference besides the yellow string so I don't see them as being so different as others do.
The next sneaker you do you should try Nike Air Force ones
Can't wait to see the experiment with re-soling the Doc Martens.
Can't wait to see the RM Williams breakdown! Would love to see how they compare to the Timms.
Aaron Pratt I’m also keen to see him rip into a pair of RMs
I've got chippewa and redwing working boots. Appreciate to have comparison with them
Rose anvil I love you. You have fueled my newest obsession.
High quality boots
I don't think anyone who's into Dr Martens would ever switch to Timberlands. To me, Timberlands look like construction boots.
omisan771 and Dr. Martens looks like cheap parody of a military boot worn by angsty 14 year olds.
Fashion is a whole different thing and it’s fun to learn stuff and watch Toaster walk around in his harness 🐱🐱❄️😊
omisan771 It’s just Military boots against Construction worker’s boots - isn’t it? I’m sooo glad tastes are different!
I wear both boots
Solovair vs Docs! Then Tims vs Solos! Aka these two vs Solos!
Solo vs docs, there is barely any difference
He already did that video: ruclips.net/video/0DzVq9RsMMQ/видео.html
@@kodokushiHill there's a big difference, welt is different, solovair has a shank, soles are much thicker and in my experience the soles seem to last almost twice as long.
@@kodokushiHill Solovair is what Doc Martens wishes it could still be.
@@apocalypsepow what docs used to be
Doc's used to have a solid rubber sole back in the 80s but they were certainly heavier as well.
I think it would be nice to see a comparison between regular consumer boots and army surplus boots.
What about timberlands vs Solovair?
Let's see a review on Thursday Boots!
Yes please. Thursday boots review.
try Panama Jack, it's a Spanish Boot very high quality, they are made by hand in Spain
The lack of a steel shank is unforgivable. Although, I would prefer no shank over balsa wood.
Phil Meeks I tried to bend the sole (like in one of the videos) while actually wearing my docs, and I couldn't. The only advantage of a shank for me is walking on some very uneven ground (which most people don't).
Egor K Try shoveling. Or walking on some small logs. Or climbing a ladder. You have to have the steel shank to distribute the load.
Levi's is a Jew brand don’t support it
I found the same with that particular sole pattern on the Docs - and disliked them enough I will never buy them again if they have that sole. Very very thin and the tread (or lack thereof) fills very easy with mud/dirt/snow. Docs a few years back had a similar star/workboot tread on them like the Timberlands and they were great
Just found your channel and I love it! I'm currently binging all your videos 😊
DM do made work industries boots and shoes. I have a pair (steel toe) that I wear on construction sites.
@@A.Musa76 Exactly!
My dad has had his premium timberlands since the 90s, they are still in excellent condition dispite his near constant usage of them
I wish i needed to buy one of these boots because this is the exact video i would be looking for. Excellent video my friend
You should do a video on leather repair kits! I just bought a Fortivo leather repair kit I’m not sure how well this is gonna work!
Al it of people want to repair their older shoes and keep them working
I would love to see the Frye harness boots, out of morbid curiosity so i either feel justified or not on buying these
#MeToo
Can you do the wolverine 1000 mile
Not sure if it's just that cobblers aren't used to resoling Docs in the US but it's really easy to get them resoled in the UK.
I am using my timberland every winter for 11 years and the soul still as new 😁
Altbergs .... please tear up some Altbergs .. pref from the military line - either the Sneeker Microlite boot or the Tabbing Tactical Elite boot
He's never going to fix the sign. ̄^ ̄
Offhand the sign being fixed should be his 100k celebration video haha
Leave the sign alone!
Why modern boots with bonded sole I've started to use "Shoe-Goo" to extend the life of the boot - Good review, Thanks!
(I've had probably 7 or 8 pairs over the years...)
Fast forward to the 90's and I got my first pair of Timberlands in Paris...
10 years the same shoes everyday ? not even the army does that to you..
I have a pair of Dr. Martens for 14 years, in the same conditions pair of Timberlands 6 inch Premiums lasted for one season.
Great quality video. Always owned DM’s before but never Timbs. Time to upgrade.
Any bikers here use Timbs for riding? Just got into bikes recently, considering getting these.
I don't know how true this is, i found a website stating the Timberland 8 inch made in USA is actually Goodyear welted and it has a vibram sole .
It’d be cool to see a review or dissection of fashion brand boots to see how well they’re constructed!! Like Stuart weitzman
Hey ! Thank you so much for this video !!
Allows to see clearly where money goes, and beyond marketing :)
Personnaly, I would love to see a comparison between these timbs and the caterpillar colorado, which seem very similar !!
Thanks and all the best !!
Please do grinders boots if you can
I don't know if you'll get this, but as much as I love this video, I would like to know what jacket you're wearing.
This was an awesome video. I was curious on the differences
First time coming to your channel. Very informative!
love the amount of work you do on this channel, found you looking for the best boot. Amazing video, you breakdown all the different parts of the boot in so many ways but still keep it easy to understand for newbs like me. only thing i would say is possibly something that could be corrected is giving the win to dr.martens for the goodyear welt when timberland doesn't even have one.
Super awesome boots shootout vid!....Timbs vs Docs ....perfect!
Would you be able to do a new rock review? They’re really expensive tho so I understand if you can’t anytime soon haha
I second this, New Rock's quality blows basically any other boot out of the water especially for their price.
@@xVumenx Not currently. Their quality went down. And the thing with them is that you can't really fit them with almost anything like the docs fx.
Finally it comes to how they look. Doc martens have an edge with the yellow thread mark
I have 2 Timberland boots. One is from 1999 and the other is 2004. Still look brand new and going to replace the 1999 sole because already hard. 2004 also going to get the sole stitch up. Both getting the soles upgrade.
Denson shoe company is restarting its manufacturing in England. I’d be excited to see you cut those open. Punk rock icons shoe from the 1970s. I hope they’re awesome
They do have a full factory in Yorkshire where they do their resoles, I imagine they may use a machine to do it rather than just a cobbler picking away the stitches by hand.
please review Caterpillar Colorado Boots
I would love to see the tear down of a leather soled boot ideally r m Williams
they are on their way!
Compare the Danner Mountain Lite to the Eddie Bauer K6. I can't decide between them, except the Danner comes in a wide size where the EB does not.
That’s a nice look friend. Where’s you get that jacket and the blue Dennis one under it from
I always thought timbs were made in and for the lumberjacks. So i was thinking of the northwest.
Thanks for doing this! Please do some wolverines! Just bought a pair of legends comp toes.
