- Do you want to know - how do you take the dash off of a ford windstar?
In the video I show you how I removed the instrument cluster (dash gauge) panel from a 1999 Windstar mini van because the gauge indicators are going nuts.
I repaired the panel and reinstalled it.
My friend has been driving it around now for months and reports everything is fine now. Problem solved.
Once I got the cluster out of the car, I took out the Torx screws and found 5 cold/broken solder connections on the smallest circuit board where one of the wire harnesses plugs-in. Just like DustySongs said!!! I heated them up and added a smidge of solder and drove the van 25 miles with no more "psycho needles" action!!! Been a problem for the last 3 years and now its gone Thank you for posting the video for the disassembly.
Somewhat helpful, but why did show it backwards? I would rather have seen the disassembly than think backwards from the reassembly. Also, why did you not show the repair you made to fix the crazy gauge problem? From the comments below I understand it is just a matter of resoldering some bad connections. I think that is why most viewers come here.
I'd like to also point out the fasteners are metric. The bolts are 8mm.

This video is pointless. You skipped over everything useful like dismantling the dash. Also you cant just replace a cluster panel without having a $3200 programming tool to tell the anti-theft system that youre legal. If you just get a panel and drop it in your Windstar will not start. Show us what you did to repair it!

when u follow these steps be sure to pull out the ignition and u will need the key for it in order for it to pull out that way it doesnt trip the theft alarm
HERE'S THE DEAL. Take the white cover off the back of the cluster. There are 2 control boards connected by ribbon cables. The problem is "bad solder joints" on the smaller board ribbon connector plugs. Find someone that has a year of electronics and have them re-solder the connections. Give me a holler and let me know if this helps.
The solder joints where the ribbon cable connectors attach to the piggy back circuit board crack. Resolder them and that should fix jumping needles.
@tvicena i don't drive this vehicle so I did not know it had tilt steering and the guy never mentioned that it had
This vid almost shows me how to fix what I need to fix. My needles jump and stay pegged during warm up. So I understand the ribbon cable is the key to fixing this. Do I need to solder the cluster's ribbon cable that stays in the car or does it come out so I can solder it on the bench?
I did falIow this video and have mess my windstar, I change the speedometer cluster succesfully by myself, but the car doesnt starts at all. I personally recomend do not to do this by yoursefl, just expend a couple of dollars and bring it to an authorized dealer. Look: The anti-tefth system will be activated and you will not be able to start your car. You will have to pay around $250 dolars for towing your car to an authorize dealer, to pay around $160 for deactivating it, and $30 for a key

Is this a known problem or something? My van has so many miles on it my od doesn't work any more my last od reading was 330k that was a year ago now my cluster doesn't work at all
