One of the best Orthodox Priests in the US is Fr. Josiah Trenham. He stands for the Biblical Foundation f Orthodox Christianity and does not let so called modernists dilute the message of repentance from sin. His channel Patristic Nectar puts out many wonderful talks on the Faith and the Saints. ☦️🙏☦️

@James.P Rock and Sand is Fantastic, my husband and I listened to it on audio when we were catechumens! Another good one was Becoming Orthodox by Fr. Peter Gilquist. I have a personal connection to this one as my father was involved in Campus Crusades for Christ for a time. Sadly ecumenism diluted the theology of my Protestant roots and I felt led to Orthodox in search of a more grounded Faith which is willing to stand against popular social movements. Lord have Mercy. ☦️🙏☦️

Father Josiah Trenham is Antiochian Orthodox. They are the most accepting of “Americans” and outspoken against abortion and other “political” issues most cradle Orthodox churches avoid. The Antiochians are also more publicly preaching the Orthodox faith than the Greeks. Although the majority of Russian Orthodox in America seem to be pretty loyal to the United States, the Moscow Patriarch is a KGB officer and the Kremlin has always used the Church as a political tool and the clergy as pawns. Praying that one day we will have an American Orthodox Church ministering to free and outspoken people.

Justus, the number of abortions in Russia declined from 53 per 1000 women a year in 2004 till something like 10-12 in 2022-2024, we left world's top-10. The same, by the way, about alcohol consumptions per capita, we have left top 10 of the most drinking nations some years ago. But for obvious reasons in many internet sources you can see "Russia no 1 in abortions per capita", and only very careful reader finds "by 2004 stats" somewehre in small letters.

President Putin received your letter and responded with his Decree dated August 19, 2024, where for the first time in history, the concept of "moral emigration" was introduced for citizens from the list of countries unfriendly to Russia as a motive for emigration to Russia. Now any citizen of these countries who believes that he suffers in his country from the imposition of LGBT and shares Russia's policy of protecting traditional family values can get a visa to enter Russia for several months at the Russian embassy or consulate for "moral reasons" in order to come to the place and see everything with his own eyes. If everything is OK, then a person can get a residence permit WITHOUT passing the exam for knowledge of the Russian language which used to be a stumbling block.. Already having a residence permit, a house, land, a job and study in Russia, such a person will learn the language and subsequently pass the exam to obtain Russian citizenship,

Just a minor point that might’ve been addressed. When someone converts to Orthodoxy, they don’t convert to Russian Orthodoxy or Greek Orthodoxy, etc, they convert to Orthodoxy and attend a Russian or Greek, etc, Orthodox Church. Russian Orthodoxy, Greek Orthodoxy, etc, all have the same beliefs. I was baptized in the Orthodox Church 5 years ago. I go to an OCA (Orthodox Church in America) parish. We aren’t a ‘Russian Orthodox Church’ but I’ve visited a local Russian Orthodox Church and can take Eucharist (Communion, the Lord’s Supper) there.

Justus, what is your view on the Orthodox practice of communicating with dead saints for the purpose of intercession. Do you view it as prohibited necromancy?

    • @eugeniodimilano
      @eugeniodimilano 21 день назад

The answer is simple. There is no death after the resurrection of Christ. From hell, Christ took the souls of the saints who languished there after physical death, because there was no heaven. The practice of Orthodox conversion to these saints does NOT replace their conversion to God directly, but only complements. The Orthodox know that the saints do not have their own power and turn to them to intercede for them before God. Each saint has passed his own unique path to Christ, renouncing his sin (drunkenness, theft, adultery, etc.), therefore, those who go to Christ now turn to them as those who know the way in practice. In any case, such an appeal to the Saints is an appeal to God, because only He is the source of strength and spirit. There is no contradiction here. The same applies to icons - they themselves are not sources of power, but serve as a church prayer attribute to help focus attention on the biblical story.

Through the entirety of The Sermon, Christ is talking about a state of heart. The Sermon is targeted specifically at people who think they are “good” and gives a picture of what true goodness is.
In The Sermon Christ shows that true goodness comes from doing good for the right reasons. The why of the action or even inaction is more important often than the action. Jesus, as do other NT authors, uses extreme language to get His point across. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin pluck it out. Or in Luke 14:26: "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and his [own] life also, he cannot be My disciple."
Now, does Jesus want us to cut our hand off or pluck our eyes out? There were some in church history who literally thought this. Or actually hate your mother abd father children and wife abd even hate yourself? Is that what Christ is saying?
I don’t think so. I think He’s saying that we should have a fanatical dedication to avoiding sin at all costs up to cutting off limbs. That’s how important it is. He’s saying that we can’t truly love ANYONE properly if we first don’t love Him to the exclusion of all else.
We know Christ speaks in the extreme because We have the rest of the NT where christ himself teaches on honoring parents and pail teaches on the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.
So self righteous egotists who scream at their kids or abandon their wives “for the sake of Christ” are nuts. They can say, however, that they are just doing what christ said, hating their children and wife in order to follow Christ. They use this scripture to justify themselves and completely miss the point that Jesus was saying to FOLLOW HIM. And that if we follow him he teaches us to love God and our neighbor. And our nearest neighbors are our wife and children, father and mother.
So how does this apply to “call no man teacher”, “call no man father”.
First of all this injunction is found in matt 22 where christ is telling his disciples to not be like the Pharisees. He spends the majority of the chapter calling down woes on the Pharisees and teachers of the law to underscore for his own disciples what they SHOULD NOT be like. Do not call any man teacher or father BUT serve one another, do it for the right reasons, don’t be like the Pharisees who stack up honorific titles and use their position to inflate their ego.
Later in the NT Paul calls himself a “father” to the Corinthians. Is he disobeying christ? He says they have many teachers and even says that the position of teacher in the church is a role given by Christ. Is he teaching error?
Look at Corinthians where Paul call’s himself a “father”, he is telling the Corinthians to look at his life, how he lived among them and that unlike the “super apostles” who demanded tithes and offering and support of their ministry Paul had, like a true father, worked himself day and night to provide for his spiritual children. So he was a father indeed to them even if they did not recognize it.
So, like in The Sermon, so here. What christ is getting at is who you do your good deeds for and why. Are you serving in the church to be recognized as an important person or to help fellow beleivers?
Let’s assume for a moment that “teacher” and “father” are forbidden titles. How about senior pastor? Dont we only have one true shepherd? How about Head Pastor? Really? Isn’t the true head christ Alone?
We can think we have it right because we don’t use the title “father” but we can and do do the exact same thing with other titles that we invent. We follow the letter of Mathew 22 but totally miss the spirit, in short we become like the Pharisees who are rebuked in that chapter, all while thinking we have obeyed christ better by not using the title “father”.
Having said all that, I think we should probably not call people according to honorific titles like father, teacher, pastor etc. There is abd by necessity must be a hierarchy of order in the church but this order should be the reverse of the order of this world.
Often when I see an error in a fellow Christian or in a branch of Christianity foreign to me, I find there is a good chance that this is probably a blind spot in myself as well.
We protestants don’t have fathers. We just have...
Reverend, pastor, senior pastor, presbyter, teaching elder, MA in theology, BA in theology, degree from prestigious Bible college or university full in the blank here, apostle, etc, etc, etc.
      But not father! :-)

@@JustusandRebeccaWalker Jesus probably teaches to hate what we love because he teaches us to hate sin. He promises to divide people with their family members (and I don't think that Old Testament or Judaism in general contains such elements (though it has some way more outrageous spots)) and I agree with Tolstoi that Paul is the antichrist (though I doubt he ever explicitly said it) and you argued that Peter wouldn't approve of him, but Peter betrayed Christ, as He predicted, so such is the stone on which He has built His church, because church is not in houses of stone of wood. And instead of the pilpul theologists usually use in these contradicting passages, I'd rather believe that he taught not to have teachers or other authority figures, but consider eachother brothers (for we're all sons of the Father) and teach each-other, not to allow anybody be in a position to brainwash. But then he also recommended to abolish taxation (and not only for the church, or did he taught not to use money at all?) and then he also spoke about many more radical changes, which could set the religion as unfit for the masses, that franciscan ascetism is path to poverty, and they teach goyim to be poor also with that "camel to go through the eye of a needle" thing. And he naturally spoke about castration (and New Testaments writes that some do so, and it never writes that it's not a right way to do it if you must. Some crazy stuff that Nazarene brought, so Paul could be a patch of that revolutionary teaching, so that you guys have many children as Jews teach themselves, so who knows whose satan is worse or better, you're probably in the right in general, even if you're wrong in the details, that you only pretend to follow Jesus, but follow Paul instead, and thus you only pretend to be christians, wisely being the jews)
