It depends on the material you are using. Normally we will be calculating the roof area. Depending on the percentage of overlap specified per unit area,

The value of rise as 1/3 of span is commonly adopted in indian conditions, where intermittent rain persists. Such a slope is necessary for fast draining of rainwater. The maximum slope is limited to 30 degree to avoid effect of Wind force over the roof. ( For rise = 1/3 span, slope is approximately 33 degree). In countries where snow fall exist, much more steeper slope is needed to avoid accumulation of snow over the roof. Conclusion **Rise = 1/3 span is a general condition in India where there is rain intermittently. **Slope of the roof (or Rise of the roof) can be decided based on the environmental conditions of the locality such as wind force, snow fall, rain etc.
Since It was made for helping diploma students in Polytechnic College of Kerala when the Government suspended regular classes due to Covid-19, I had no other choice than to take classes in mother tongue.
Notching of rafters are not considered during the estimation since it is of negligible quantity. Notching positions are provided as per the technical drawings and depending on the type and size of members used. You might not be finding some data in this video because this video is made for diploma students for study purpose based on the book QUANTITY SURVEYING by B.N. Dutta. So, in this video I strictly follow the text book and depth of explanation is based Diploma syllabus. Please ask your doubt in detail. I shall try to give you the explanation.

It's a mistake actually. 8.35 is the correct value.
