Also, I highly respect folder enthusiasts with something to prove. I personally wouldn't sink that much money into a Brompton though, I don't have that much to burn haha. I found a very stable and light aluminum frame with ISO 451 wheels a few months back that I threw 42/56t chainrings and a 11-28t 10-speed cassette at, just to laugh at people who think folders are all slow. So much fun to take off like a rocket at lights and then just stay fast. Sometimes the big-wheels are still arrogant enough to block directly in front of me when they catch me at a long light, even if they were a few dozen seconds behind (I certainly wasn't blocking them being able to pass lol, but they sure do when they force ahead of me hahaha). All they do is get in my way, making me have to duck into traffic to avoid them on my way back into the bike lane (or stay with the cars for a block or two to get past them). Keep fighting the small-wheel fight.
How can a 33t front combo chainring work when the chain touches the rear triangle with a 11t sprocket. I have a p line with 38t/48t front ring and when on 38t it just by millimetres misses
It's funny... I don't even see SunRace as a terrible company for affordable cassettes and the like. Didn't expect such a close relationship with Brompton all the way to today.... But perhaps it's not surprising. Brompton seems to relish in using non-standard solutions, it seems like an anti-competition move.
I believe Brompton is a fan of Apple as it does the same kind of bad business model, where you get stuck with only what they make so they can get money from you on every end. Hence why they made the Brompton Junction and specific/unique parts.
My lightweight Brompton styled bike has only external gears. I'm currently using 58t oval by 11-25t. the 58 oval gives me the equivalent of 60 on the power stroke, whilst still allowing me to fold the bike (the 60t is JUST too big and gets in the way of the front fork hook). This still gives me just over 90 gear inches at most. I haven't measured it, but by feel, and being told the M6L 6-speed top gear is about 100 gear inches, this matches my experience when comparing to my own C-line M6L. I wonder if the cassette will take a 10t cog.. hmm. If you're going for high gears, at some point you're still going to run out of power to combat the wind, rolling resistance, and geartrain inefficiency. I've had fun upgrading to Schwalbe Pro One tires with TPU inners, and my lightweight bike has no mudguards. I'd love to hear more tips on getting more speed out of this little thing.
I'm in the exact same business with teaking my Steel 2011. got some ti parts, kojak Tubolito, 54 teeth, on a 6 speed basis. but haven't made the jump to P line, Chptr3. I also found so fun to see the face of road bikers on a Race ring in Paris. Not specially trying to prove something to them, but so amazed with the potential of what can fit in my trunk/flat. Recently after the BWC, I finally gave in and bought an after market P line 4speeds! (1900 euros so pretty happy for a 2 months old bike). But now I struggling with the wright modification to make it a rocket. H&H 54/33 is quite tempting: versatility, light (you even save 20g)- but practicality is not great (fyi I do live in a very hilly place, like very steep). buying the 3 speed Hub to achieve the 12 speeds, I know it adds weight, it's still cumbersome to shift but I admit I kind of like the idea of a bike that can go also any where. And last option, add a 5th sprocket instead of the mudgard ring. Not and easy choice. what are you tyre of choice to race?
So you recommend a 60 tooth chainring for ultimate speed? I love everything by H&H. Do they make large 60T single chainring? I like having only rear gears and a fixed front chainring. What would you recommend for the rear cog for maximum speed to go with the 60T chainring? I love your channel. You're so smart.
I doubt they make a 60t, but a 56 is not far off. The Brompton rear hub will not take anything below 11t, but there are custom hubs that can take 10 and even 9. You will have to shop around.
Regarding your ability to take on any roadbikers. It's your iron legs. in the BWC final, check out our GCN friends who just take over 14 bikers after a bad start, finishing 2nd. and he was not out of breath!. cannot compete with the athlete. As road bike vs Brompton, My search lead me to the following differences: rolling resistance of small wheels is a bit higher, aerodynamism worse, friction with the jockey wheels are poor (no bearings), bottom bracket need a change. tires a bit larger = more frictions, vibration strain muscles a tad more (on long race not criterium and depending on the terrain) All this require to compensate. It's just like winning a marathon, while running with a small/medium backpack ! So you can be proud of your performance!
When I bought my 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton in 2019, I honestly didn't know for what use I had the 3 low gears till I met an absurd hill on Danish Bornholm, and had to walk on top, going up! But 12 gears I would find totally absurd, complicated to use and rather useless for the very limited speed range of a Brompton, and for the very few times I would need gears outside my range. And if so I could ad an extra chainring in front, to get 12 possible gears! I would much more like to ad a straight Chinese, 7 speed chain-gear wheel and a shifter, which it is possible to add on a standard Brompton frame/triangle. They are easy to find from web shops in China, delivering to Europe. And much less complicated than buying anything from the UK, after the brilliant idea of Brexit! Finn. Denmark
Bashing Brompton is pointless. Look at: *Kinetic Cycles, based in Glasgow UK. Owner Ben Cooper makes triangles and forks to accommodate these alternative IGHs & disc brakes. *Van Eerder Metal, based in EU offers options similar to Kinetic, inc derailleur options.
It makes sense that Brompton are trying to protect sturmey archer because the buy lots of parts but it is only a matter of time when Brompton will realise that belt drive system is the future, year on year with other manufacturers who make touring, electric, mountain bikes a couple of years back were only 5% now few years later 30% pretty soon will overtake chain systems, you mentioned a hub which is only a couple of of millimetres difference can you elaborate on that hub in future video please.
don't know why you keep suggesting changing sprockets so much. It changes the spacing of the gears so your cadence will be all messed up. That's why companies like Brommie plus recommend only certain combinations in their 3 sprocket kits. Anyway, I don't think the factory 12 speed is as big a joke as you say.
Stop messing about with bromptons. And get a Tern verge X range. The greatest folders ever made. Too many people seduced by these overpriced overrated Bromptons. An X20 or X11 blows them all away..

A good number of people have made it work. There is info on those online. Ultimately, Brompton should have done the engineering.

You won't get top speeds out of a small wheel ride without a hub gear setup.
Going from a 12t sprocket to an 11t one does not increase the gear inches by 20%, but only by 9%.
Agreed. It was going from 50 to 60 on the chainwheel that got me the 20% gain.
