Amazing Alex Moulton Small Wheel Separable Frame Bikes are Even Better with Hot Wheels (11.2024)
Clickbait title. Tern "blowing off the wheels off the Brompton G Line" - RIDICULOUS!
Love the original - i think they are from the 60s to 70s - 600 or 500 cc
Wow, what another amazing bike. You keep finding the good ones. How are are you doing this? Just walking the streets?
Online research.
You seem to be anti-Brompton for some reason. Your videos are the only mention I can find of any Brompton bankruptcy issue and they don't mention any other kinds of bikes, which your arguments should also apply to if they made any sense. I have no idea what household consumer electricity prices have to do with bikes, or transportation of any kind unless you're talking about charging your electric car - and I would advise against electric cars (1) because of the battery fire problems we are seeing more and more of, and (2) because of the lack of places to charge them if you live in an apartment/condo or are travelling. I don't think the electric kick scooters are competition for Bromptons or any other kind of bikes, especially folding bikes, because (1) they cannot be taken easy-on/easy-off on many forms of public transportation like trains, aircraft, or even public buses, (2) you cannot take them indoors and fit them under your table or desk so they are useless for commuting or any running around town where you need to leave the scooter to go indoors to a restaurant or store, and (3) I have never seen anyone over the age of 20-something on a scooter whereas Bromptons (and other bikes) are popular with adults into their senior years, and I have never seen anyone older than a teenager on a skateboard (unless you are talking about world-class competition skateboarders, of which there are so few you cannot even include them in this argument). What you list as key drivers for growth (shown at 15:42) would be more of an argument FOR Bromptons and other bikes than for electric scooters. The superior foldability of the Brompton allows it to be easily carried in car trunks and on all forms of public transport, even on airlines. So the competition you show in that conclusion is sales propaganda for pushing electric scooters and the like but it simply does not exist in reality. A huge portion of those millions of units sold are to companies providing large-scale in-city rentals, and the ones sold to individuals are very likely used only for a few years until the user outgrows them and drives a car.
There are many e-scooters that fold faster and smaller than a Brompton. Keep watching 👀 my videos to find out more.
Elegant and clean lines a beauty
Definition of Bicycling/Engineering Triangulation!
Going too fast that close to exit doors.
Beautiful and functional jewelry with wheels. Scenery watching-and-touring jewelry!
And a cheap way to get into Moulton.
Is that your bike ?
You wish ;-)
@@SmallWheelWonder I’ve been looking on EBay at a few recently, they have that thing about them that other bikes wished they had .
It is the Rolls Royce of upright bikes. If you persist, you can fine bargains... especially if you look beyond just eBay.
@@SmallWheelWonder beyond EBay ? Don’t know where else to look here in the UK.
I searched for 'classic moulton bicycle for sale' and quickly found a bunc of them, including this one: www.gumtree.com/for-sale/sports-leisure-travel/bicycles/uk/srpsearch+moulton+bicycle
Bike Lanes Are Dangerous™ (said a certain Frisco Boy).
Interesting....
Wow, that's breathtaking. So beautifully conserved. Streamlined. Minimal. Efficient. Ergonomic. Elegant. A masterpiece of utilitarian art.
It might have been restored. You can get a decent frame of this vintage for under $1000, which is a solid bargain.
What are you yapping old man. Brompton invested a lot in new factory that's why no profits + they're made in UK, higher costs. Plus competition catching up quickly. Asia is out of Bromptons reach plus look at bike market during lockdown. It went double digits up. Market is flooded with used bikes now. Think before your antivax bs.
Stay tuned for my video on why Brompton will be gone in the next five years.
After listening to a few of these videos I realize this person doesn't really know what he's talking about. Criticisms are merely about his personal taste in aesthetics and price and has very little to do with function and rideability of the bicycles. Not an objective review but a tour of his personal favs.
Having ridden Brompton, Birdy and Xootr for 20 years and having built the fastest Brompton on the planet ensures that I really don't know what I'm talking about. Price doesn't matter.... I love this comment.
Want similar cars IN America!
These were sold here but not enough buyers :-(
What about in the wet weather rain? Do you still reccomend the scorcher on city streets? I live in hilly Bristol and enjoy riding at speed when taking corners. Would the scorcher slip out underneath on wet weather city streets when cornering? Right now I am using the Continental Contact Urbana on my brom
Do not use in the wet because it is deadly!
@@SmallWheelWonder Thank you! Will instead keep my continental urbans or look how to do a big apple conversion!
Until I bring a proper 1.5" all season tire to the market, you have only those two choices.
Thank you for sharing! Dampens my Christian eyes.
Uploading 25 minute video of the full climb now.
Totally beyond cute terrier buddy! Would repeatedly visit that toy fetcher!
Tomorrow is my last day here. I may drop by for the last time ;-)
I'm on a Dahon Mu with Nexus 8 hub and shock absorber seat post. I put 2.15 schwalbe pickups on it, and it now goes anywhere. V breaks are fine. I love the 20"s on single track. It's like a BMX for grown ups.
When your Dahon gives up, you may want to look into the top-end handmade stuff.
@SmallWheelWonder a friend rides Brompton and says it's noticeably better. But I feel like I'd wreck it. So I stick with the dahon
What? This looks awesome. Did you check it out? Ride it? How does it compare to the OG Brompton?
No such luck :-(
@@SmallWheelWonder 😔
@@SmallWheelWonder I think this is a real Brompton that's been modified. I could be wrong. Check out: Palace Brompton C Line Urban
Could be.
I am working with a mechanical engineer to create a bottom bracket, that would be the pivoting point of my brompton's rear fold, removing the chain tensioner. Once that's done, was toying with the idea of having a droupout that can be split so that it could be used with a belt drive, but that just stuff for the future.
That is quite a project. Would love to see the result.
I personally am friends with bruce r. Nelson
We would love to see either the Aptera trike or the solar truck on the road for real rather sooner than later. We have been waiting for a long time.
Impressive, maximized design!
Problem would be parts right? Like you can get bromtom parts anywhere.
Tern is a far larger operation than Brompton, and they have a solid support network. One the other hand, they update and fundamentally change models frequently.
@@SmallWheelWonder Maybe in the U.S, but you seem them much less in the E.U.
Could be. At least the Europeans are protecting their markets.
At first i read this as "Dalmatian Coat".
;-))))
Maybe these belts are uniquely adapted as a bicycle drive system, but having worked with industrial belt drive systems, belts were more often used on high speed/low torque applications and chains on high-torque/low speed applications, where rubber cog belts under high torque are more inherently prone to slippage, something that can not only be inconvenient in a bicycle drive system but could cause significant injury.
This technology is exciting but still has a long way to go to seriously challenge the chain for performance applications.
Belts work great for motorbikes too, except when you need to replace them of course... My guess is that torque and speed in bike drive trains would both be considered as low in industrial environments.
Surprised gates being the major player in the belt drive system haven’t come up with a easy link scenario themselves rather than having to dismantle part of the bike to change the belt, lets hope they don’t get stuck in the mindset of the Brompton way of thinking = not really thinking just doing .
Like Brompton, they believe that they are too big to fail. Unlike Brompton, they may be right ;-)
@@SmallWheelWonder Strange how some companies can’t see the wood for the trees.
Visit suburban New York, next 🙂
I am landing in NYC on February 6 and will probably have a lot to share having returned from a 7 month trip. I feel like an alien ;-)
Get the G-Line to the customers! That would separate this fool from his money...
The G line has already separated many fools from their money.
I took a look at their numbers for the year ending 31/03/2024 Turnover is indeed down but by 3,4% which is not that alarming Gross profit % remains more or less stable around 50% The big increase is in the Admin expenses which includes wages but also non cash costs like depreciation and amortizations Their wage cost is stable which is good given the inflation. Their operational cash flow took a big hit but is still positive so based on that you can’t conclude they’re on their way out One thing they should work on is reduce their inventory levels. Those are too high in relation to their total balance sheet in my view. Which can cause liquidity issues if not careful.
I appreciate your input. I am about to predict far worse in an upcoming video. Stay tuned!
SO seems these small cars would be popular in America! Highest gas mileage would be everything to me!
Small could work but only if moved upmarket -- meaning more power and luxuries. MINI and the VW Golf are the only success stories.
@@SmallWheelWonder I would have SO wanted an expressway illegal, 80-100mpg mini car!!!
The smooth, non-complex style is HUGE in my view!
Beautiful Toyota!
Not much bigger than a velomobile.
For some reason fiat doesn’t do well in Asia the compact design should have been a no brainer
The Japanese and the Chinese have already copied this, the Smart car and everything in between, selling their clones at a discount.
For some reason fiat doesn’t do well even in Asia.
I have dealt with Ti39. I have had only good experiences with them. They are very responsive. Purchased a titanium stem for my 2019 Superlight from them. Great experience.
Thanks for the info.
Wow love that colour - some kinda green… and the chrome bits lovely
I'd call it moss.
I wander how that rides compared to a normal gravel bike like a Trek FX2
More comfortable and rigid, but the smaller and lighter wheels are an entirely different feeling.
Bicycling Fun and jewelry combined!
Very chic .
Watched totally. Interesting.., but could NOT live there. America likely coming back America now. Decades-hated leftism now becoming past tense. Restaurants have been closing here too. Also, only agricultural and forested areas for me. Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. House neighborhoods around me downed19-21 deer to ~9 deer. Bike trails are everything to me.
I could not live here, either. Leaving in two days ;-)
Prettiest conservative styling too!
Off-and-On, AND even utility for handicappers! Oh, yeah! Would even happily take along rain clothes!
A little cabin would be nice.
@@SmallWheelWonder Agree!
Ive just been researching belt drives for Brompton. Apparently Veer do a split belt which would be easier to change. There's a removable link.
Love the idea!
The Veer belts are joined by 20? Single use rivets. No remove able link unfortunately. Good idea though. Recently they have been exploring a 2 speed hub with a genius mechanism to change gears. Brilliant both but totally impractical when compared to chains or Gates belts.
Belts are essentially self-cleaning so are used by bike packers going through muddy terrain or other hostile environments. Harley Davidson bikes use similar but wider belts also from Gates. Carbon fibres give them superpowers/ longevity.
About the bigger tire. There are two aspects: Comfort, Forward Falling Risk 1. WRT comfort, your points are valid. Comparison to car and truck tire sizes also valid. 2. Forward falling Risk. The higher your body's center of mass is wrt the hub height, the higher the risk that you will fall over the handle bars. 'Falling over the handlebars is the most injurious way to fall off a bike. By increasing tire size, you reduce this risk and also increase cyclist control during braking/potholes etc. Personally G line was a great business decision that will get more people into the brand, and will also reduce people who move away from the brand as they got older.
If this works, 28" rims will work even better.
These builds are not 20” wheels like G line.
They are 305 mm rims that look perfect.
Really nice! I have thought about giving mine spoked wheels and 7-chain gears for an easier running transmission than my 2 times 3 internal gears! Finn Denmark
Love scooters that are so easy to step through! Also, a huge scooter not at all needed either! FUN gas saver! Wish for trike scooters with 2 rear wheels!

@@SmallWheelWonder That would make a great article!
@ Thinking; Motorcycle license would be required. My Hase Lepus with E-assist AND pedals is no license!!! No longer car & motorcycle driver's license here!
I thought you owned a van....
@@SmallWheelWonder Yes. Toyota Sienna. Wife who knows jumper cables.., jumped it wrong and hurt the van's electronics! Got to have it towed and repaired. Likely high price!
I bought my now much/nearly fully-rebuilt SuperlightM6LXBrompton in 2019 and the few parts which are left from the original bike are down to around 9 kilos, still with mudguards, as a Dane. I haven't a need for an extra motor (I hardly go from the same A to B constantly) but my own power is what I need, as I don't run out of it at strange places with no Electricity around! Finn. Denmark
Range anxiety is a serious problem. One I intend to tackle this year.
Bro you post the same comment under any brompton video

@ Yes any problems by that?
We love you either way ;-) Keep posting!
So enticing for riding and scenery.
$5000+ and it still has rim brakes???
