  • How to attach and install kitchen cabinets. It’s cabinet day on our project and we brought the video camera along to show you all of our tips and tricks when it comes to installing cabinetry. We have been installing the cabinetry on our own projects for decades now and can usually get an entire kitchen installed in one day. One of the main topics we cover is how to attach the face frames of the cabinets together in a perfectly tight joint without damaging the face frames. this video does not cover crown molding, that will be in a later video. A sidenote is that we did put in solid walking on the tops and bottoms of all the cabinetry behind the drywall. If you do not have this done you’ll have to use a stud finder to locate studs to attach the cabinetry to. We also cover some of the common opening sizes and dimensions for different appliances in your kitchen.

I was in the cabinet business for about 20 years and I love the fact that special attention was paid to the blocking in the walls so that you do not have to hunt for a stud to make sure the cabinetry is secured to the wall properly. This way, no matter where you attach the cabinets, you are insured that the cabinetry is solidly installed to the walls and is permanently part of the house! Also saves a ton of time on installation. Thanks for your attention to detail!

@@mrsbradpittiful, well played! The "Negative Nancies" on this thread are mostly "finish carpenters" who wouldn't have a job/career if not for "framing carpenters". I wonder how many of them would know what to do if they had to install cabinets or trim in a room that is more than an eighth of an inch out of square, level or plumb? Not to mention how many even know the difference between those 3 descriptions!!!

Nice vid, thanks mate. Looks like its a new build, whereas I've been fitting kitchens for 30+ years mostly in old houses, nothing level / straight / square / vertical / flat. It is absolutely vital to take as much time as you need to mark out everything, calculate clearances, angles, spacing before you start. Then sequence the work, clearing out, preparation, first fit wiring, plumbing, fitting, finishing etc. The two things I like to hear at the end of a job are: 'How would you like paying?', and, 'You've done a brilliant job, thank you so much.'

Going back looking at old content on the channel shows how much more comfortable/better everyone has gotten on camera. I do like the specific topics as an alternative to the long series of following a whole house build but the long builds are still the best.

When I gang my cabinets together on top I use finish screws right where the door hinges go so that they are not visible to the homeowner. The finish screws have a much smaller head.
I also learned over the years don’t wear a tool belt when hanging cabinets.

From now on when the framers are done I'm putting blocking in for the cabinets before the drywall goes up. Also using a trick I saw in another one of your videos by screwing a 2x6 or 2x10 to the wall and marking it in place and then cutting instead of taking a hundred different measurements. Blocking is going to make it so much easier.

I love that you highlighted the need to use the right size levels such as when going over the dishwasher gap. I was in the stone countertop business for some time. Granite level tolerance is an 1/8” over 10’. I can’t tell you how many times I’d measure for a countertop and the cabinets would be out 1/2” in 10’. Then I’d see the 2’ level and know exactly what happened.

Nice Video. Always like your productions... very entertaining and situational true. One thing you guys need to have, especially if you install cabinets often, are face frame clamps. They are cheap and I believe Bessey manufactures very decent ones. In one clamping, they'll flush up the two face frames for no catch sits, they'll join them together and have the integrated straight holes for the drilling and the screws.
Just food for thought for the guys who do everything.

Bessey makes a cabinet clamp (model # BES8511). It clamps the cabinets and also levels the face styles. They aren't as great as the old Pony cabinet clamps but they do the same job. All you need is 2 and it should only cost $40-50. Hang your first cabinet, these clamps will hold your second, and you can go down your run with one man leveling and screwing.

    1. That kitchen window over the sink should have had the window trim installed before the cabinets. Also the window frame & jamb should have been painted, stained or clear coated.
    2. Cabinets should have had 1/2 plywood underneath so they were at the same level as the finished floor. Not a good idea to use floating flooring in a kitchen as water, spills will end up causing them to warp. Recommend using tile since its the most durable and not effected by water, or cleaning agents typically used in kitchens.
    3. Probably a good idea to prime the subfloor when the sink & dishwasher is going to help protect the subfloor if there is a leak. Often leaks can occur for weeks before the homeowner (or renter) notices the leak.

Crazy seeing this. As a trim carpenter I was first taught to do kitchens on my lone some. Thinking it was impossible, my boss/teacher quickly showed me that wasn't the case if following proper procedure and using the right tools. To see 3 guys hanging one 18in upper is hilarious. Watching this I see why carpentry was split into 2 sub categories. Rough and Finished. Don't want your framers trimming ur house just as you wouldn't want your trimmer to frame. Great information though

GRK cabinet screws to the studs and GRK trim screws for the face frame, those screws you use are huge

I like to drill the hole to secure the face frames between the hinge screw holes. The hole is hidden by the hinge.

I always use a laser level. So much easier and more precise.

Most laser lines project a beam that is 3mm thick a pencil line is 1mm .So if it's accuracy your looking for then the level and pencil is more accurate.

Laser is way more accurate.....line is very easy to see in the middle of the beam. Also a laser allows you to check the entire floor for low spots so you can start on the opposite side of the room and end up exactly where you want. So many advantages with a laser, those are just a start.

@@ivor7407 I agree but you can ping laser round and check if the floor's running out before you do anything plus laser is quicker and when 3 men want wage's on a kitchen times is money

Loved the video. When installing the island, do you connect the 2nd cabinet face frame to the first cabinet BEFORE securing it to the cleat?

I have special cabinet install clamps that line up the face automatically and also a place to drill the hole thru the clamp and it keeps your drill perfectly straight.

GRK - "Headless" Trim and Cabinet screws are the only way to go!! WAY less work than trying to pre-drill for a deck screw!

When u have a bank of 2, 3 or 4 cabinets u can pre assemble them on the floor then slam them up. Looks like u have enough help to exactly that
