- Helio Gracie vs. Masahiko Kimura - Colourised & Remastered. The legendary bout between Helio & Kimura took place at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on October 23, 1951.
Competing in a judo gi under a ruleset that Helio called the "jiu-jitsu rule". Kimuras initial plan was to knock out Helio Gracie with a throw and was able to hit an ouchi gari, harai goshi, uchi mata and ippon seoi nage but the softness of the mats prevented a knockout.
On the mat Kimura passed Helios guard into side control and secured a kesa gatame. Eventually, as Helio rolled and give up his back, Kimura followed and secured a yoko sankaku jime or side triangle choke. It was during this that Kimura applied enough pressure for Helios ear to begin bleeding and for him to lose consciousness but he regained it as Kimura moved to another dominant position.
Eventually, Kimura locked up a gyaku-ude-garami or Double Wrist-Lock and broke Helio Gracies arm, as Gracie refused to tap Kimura kept cranking on the broken arm until Carlos Gracie threw in the towel and entered the mat to tap out on Kimuras back for his brother.
Kimura was declared the winner, with the move used to break Helios arm now bearing his name in jiu-jitsu circles and the match lives on in history.
The footage was taken from multiple sources to try and get the best quality and has been colourised and remastered. The full footage of the fight wasn't available and was either never released, has been lost or doesn't exist.

Kimura took the challenge to played Gracie’s game and still win. Gracies just could not swallow the truth for several generations.
Most of the guys today dont take a fight with a -2kg diff. Let alone challenge someone else.
@@jonas416siyep Weight plays a vital role
Kimura would get get defeated against modern BJJ in his weight class. Both are legends who contributed to the grappling arts massively.
The weight difference increases by 100 lbs every year the Gracies talk about this match lol
the weight difference in that match was smth like 18lbs not 80lbs like they say !
Yes kimura looks a little heavier but gracie was taller with longer limbs but IMO the difference was kimura's strength. Both guys had great technique but kimura was just too strong for gracie. I don't think it would've mattered if they would've been the same exact weight bc kimura's strength advantage far outweighed his size advantage.
Kimura was 7 feet and 1 ton
@@Quidouteits definately more than 18 pounds just by looking at the video, maybe it was or wasn't 80 pounds but it was definately alot more than 18

Kimura is a fucking tank
Kimura snapped his arm in two places, I believe. That Gracie pride would not allow Helio to give up. Kimura is a legend, there's even a move named after him today, though it wasn't his specialty. His favourite move was the large outer reap (osoto gari), which he apparently practiced against a tree.
Actually I heard Kimura praised Helio for his heart seeing he did not tap even after he got his arm snapped
The move is actually called ude garami bro, kimura ia just the westernized name
@@emildegas4213 I am aware that it is not actually named Kimura. However, it is a nickname, and what most people call it nowadays, because of Kimura himself doing it.
He used to knock people out with Osoto gari all the time.
Wait... I know this comment is 10mo old, but I'm struggling to see how one can osoto gari a tree.
I love the antics leading up to this fight as well. Helio brought a coffin for Kimura, Kimura just laughed. The floor was extra padded so Kimura's throw didn't have much effect on Helio, and then Kimura sliced through Helio's guard like hot knife through butter, tried to smoother Helio with scarf hold and then transitioned to the double wrist lock. I love jiu jitsu and the Gracies were the one that made it mainstream, but man Kimura kicked Helios' butt, but the Gracies somehow claimed a moral victory. oh well
With the weight difference is unfair but helio beat his best. Man that had the same weight this is out of weight match I don’t rate it like how other people do it wasn’t fair and he lasted 10 min anyway
Don't know much huh?
buying a coffin for him yet had to have padded floors so he didn't get slammed haha
@@fabolousjada5070
Weight difference.. but I don’t know if he could have beat him even if they were the same size…
Helio was good but not nearly as good as his sons and nephews.
So what I saw was that Kimura kicked his ass.
No other way to look at it
They took "if you can survive more than 2 minutes call it a victory" to heart
@@Schwartzbruder1 funny thing about that Is helio was knocked unconscious from the throw
@@sirpibble if the fight was on pavement helio would be way fked up
@@sirpibble the floor was padded so helio wouldnt be hurt by throws
Master Kimura was like a dad disciplining his child 😂😂😂 they even named a move after him,the Kimura 😂😂😂
Man guard retention was non existent back then. The longer version of the video is horrendous. Master Kimura played with Helio's GI much like Sakuraba did with Royce
According to many former students Gracie Jiujitsu at that time was very simply and only a few basic sweeps and counters and not to many armlock or choke variety until Rolls Gracie added in his Judo,Sambo, freestyle wrestling,Grecoroman and luta styles he learned into his jiujitsu. Rolls was a mad man he and rickson competed in wrestling, judo, sambo and won whole tournaments and also gained black belt in Judo and Sambo rather then just stick to only GJJ.
We as grapplers owe a lot to people like Helio and Kimura. Both great masters of their craft. Stay humble guys and girls.
The asshole literally brought a coffin for Kimura saying he would put him in it. We don't owe shit to Helio or the Gracies. Fuck them
Then Helio told the newspaper reporters that losing to Kimura is actually a victory. The reporters put that in the headlines and the next day thousands of people sign up to Helio’s school cause they actually thought Helio was victorious.
I’ve accepted the fact that BJJ came from Judo Newaza. A win is a win. 🤷🏻♂️
Nobody seems to understand this fact.
most ppl do lol, bjj as a whole has had more sucess in mma.
kimura was just a better fighter then helio (& bigger, ik its a meme but size matters).
Did that fact bother you before?
This is a treasure!
Thank you!
kimura is the youngest 5th Dan judo black belt when he was 18 years old....kodokan judo is the most complete martial arts..the gracies made money but skill and fighting kimura is a legend he trained masoyama as well kyokushin is not complete form without the guidance of kimura the big brother of masoyama of kyokushin karate...
Kodokan Judo WAS a very complete style but the Olympics turned most of the schools in Sporting using IJF and limited ground grappling to a few seconds most of the time, banned leg grabs, neck cranks and leg locks and should locks, banned standing armlocks and banned certain grips etc etc.
While traditional Kodokan barely teaches ground work anymore.
And Kosen Judo banned leglocks..
Judo in the 1890s-1925 was a complete Martial art- 1925-1960 was still superior to gracie jiujitsu but modern Judo fell off hard.
Just like BJJ is falling off hard with the new guardwork that only works if striking isnt allowed and bann on guard slamming and a wonky point system where people just sweep you once then stall for a win....
@@teovu5557 depends really do modern BJJ only bad thing is guard pulling, you got ADCC all the UFC champions during the early days were all ADCC champions and competed at ADCC, if guard pulling gets abolished then BJJ is really good with wrestling like top guys do,
@@teovu5557this was by design. The first "judo" students all turned into violent criminals. That version was a compilation of maybe thousands of years of different martial arts.
The world should know the truth. Jujitsu originates from Japan not Brazil

Spent a bunch of time on this one trying to piece together the best sections of available footage to restore. Unfortunately, it seems like the full match isn't available and has either never been released, was never filmed or the footage was lost. About 2 minutes of the fight do exist and I have done the rest which I will also upload at a later date. Just wanted to preserve this piece of JIu-Jitsu history.
If Rogan wears this shirt as often as his Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali shirts, i think you've just remastered a cornerstone of martial arts history right here.

Kimura is such a chad. No one before Kimura, No one after Kimura.
How you can follow the Gracie family after that 😂
Helio told the newspaper reporters that losing to Kimura means he won. So people who read the newspapers actually thought Gracie won. That’s the only reason they followed him and BJJ became popular.
Mr. Gracie had a lot of guts getting on the mat with someone who possessed unworldly skill, size and strength.
Sakuraba was just an animal, from another world. What a such dominant human being. He put the Judo in another level.
Sakuraba was not Judo but catch wrestling. His teacher was Billy Robinson. Catch wrestling destroyed Gracie Jiu Jitsu
bro stood no chance Kimura is an absolute lion
I don't like the way the Gracie family operates, sweeping their defeats under the rug and never bring up their grand masters name Mitsuyo Maeda. You're videos do a great service to Martial Arts. Japanese Jujitsu is the real Jujitsu. That is fact, not opinion.
With the internet, their rugs are pulled out under them. On the other side of the token, the internet is what made their jj viral

Kimura participated in Kosen Judo tournaments in 1936 and 1937 and destroy Helio on the ground where Helio was considered an expert. Yassuit Ono throw Helio 32 times in a match in the 30s but in the ground became a draw, but Kimura destroy Helio standing and in the ground amazing fighter.

Quero.ver a luta inteira. Somente nesses trechos é visivel a superioridade do Kimura.
A luta inteira é uma mídia perdida. Muito triste ☹️ só resta as matérias do jornal e os relatos de quem viu e de Kimura e do gracie
this is amazing. a piece of history in color.
Two giants, in whose shadow we all train today. May they rest in peace.
Kimura era simplemente muy fuerte y su conocimiento de la lucha de piso era otro nivel, incluso dentro del propio judo.
The Gracie legacy was to bring jiu jitsu to the world to help those who did not understand the ground game. I will tell you first hand, I have been able to survive countless altercations and incidences because of the knowledge hidden within the Gracie system. You don't have to win you just have to survive.
Exactly, the gracie really knew about ground game. But lets be real about BJJ To often think that BJJ is just about fighting on the ground is also forgetting that jiu jitsu is a martial art that, like the others, was made to evolve. so much that there are thousands of grapplers who are better at jiu jitsu than the gracies because these grapplers introduced elements of wrestling and takedowns, for example
helio got ragdolled
The audience threw piss and spit on Kimura before the event!!!
I hate the dis-Gracies. Lies, lies and more dirty lies.
Thanks Kimura and Sakuraba.
What lies? Chill out kid.
@@Carmine_Lupertazzi They claim BJJ is the ultimate martial art, when it's not a martial art at all, it's a sport. They claim they invented it. They claim they were the best at it. Almost all gracie family Was defeated by Sakuraba..
Sakuraba beat 4 wich is a greag accomplishment but the gracie family consist of like 30 members with 15 having been champions or some shit. But Sakuraba beated some of the most decorated ones so respect to him.
Sakuraba has a bunch of submission and ko losses on his record. His style just matched up well with the Gracie style.
Almost ! 🙏
most of sakuraba's early losses was due to fighting guys 3-4 weight classes above him which he was known for doing. And his recent losing steak was when he was in his 40s and way out of his prime.
And he beat a lot of quality guys who werent gracies....
He beat giants at the time like Kevin Randleman,Ken Shamrock,Vermin white,Victor Belfort, carlos Newton, guy mezger, quinton jackson, masihiko funaki etc etc
@@SonnyBrown Relek Gracie fight was stupid, Relek was in his 20s and Sakuraba was in his early 40s and the gracies celebrated like they just beat a prime sakuraba(who probably would of won that fight if the ref didnt restart them when he had that kimura locked in forcing him to lose his grip too)

"He was tree times me size."
Gracie in his room screaming and crying in pain and said " damn my hand is broken hurt so bad!!"
Unfortunately we will likely never see the entire fight unedited.
Always nice watching a gracie get dominated
Damn and Kimura also looked like he was past his physical prime here too
he was retired from Judo comp and a heavy drinker. Rumor is he was overweight n didnt train for this fight. but still won lol
Japanese people - Teach Gracie Family jiu jitsu.
Gracie Family - Start thinking they are the best and try fight against the people who teach them.
Gracie rules, Gracie arena, Gracie mats. Kimura usually won by throwing his opponents onto the mat with such force (due to vigorously drilled technique, not size) he concussed them. The Gracies made sure the mats were too soft for him to do this, and made a ruleset which meant a win could only be obtained by submission; their specialty. They re-invented ground fighting, then made sure for the match you could only win ground fighting... and lost anyway. This is like a boxing champion challenging an MMA fighter in boxing, and in altered rules boxing that suited their unique style, and still being beaten.
Helio later admitted in a media interview that he was choked into unconsciousness in this match, but Kimura released the choke to move to the keylock. Helio stated that for this, he owed Kimura his life.
And Kimura was bigger than him by about 20 pounds, but it was the Gracies who insisted size doesn't matter to such a degree they didnt even see a weigh-in as important.
BJJ is a fantastic style and it's completely changed the way we think about martial arts... but the Gracies are masters of marketing and masters of revisionist history. If they didn't go to such lengths to construe this utter domination over them as a win I mightn't be saying that.
haha , nothing like the gracies liars said it happened.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!
Damn I wish this fight wasn't so devisive. BJJ and Judo are brothers(well more like Judo is the father), but we can continue to learn from each other and integrate aspects of each other's techniques. I mean let's forget about the sport aspect for a second. Old Judo had a lot of newaza, and BJJ as a complete fighting system should have many throws. They're different expressions of the same art.
I would love to see kimura do the exact same thing to every other gracies. Love the gracies but them dudes heads got big and recently their fighters have been very bad. This is coming from a gracie barra guy lol
Sakuraba is a mixed martial artist. Kimura is a world renowned judoka with very noticeable weight advantage. Sakuraba took a combined total of around 2.5 to 3 hours to beat three of them out of 5 matches. And Kimura 13 minutes in a strict grappling match. I say the Gracies don't get enough credit.
Thank. You for this
