SPECTACULAR CF-18 HORNET DEMO & FLYPAST WITH SPITFIRE RCAF 100TH ANNIVERSARY • RIAT RAF FAIRFORD

This was a spectacular CF-18 solo display by the RCAF in the special Blue/Gear cog livery at the world famous Royal International Air Tattoo held at RAF Fairford. The livery is very striking and features meanings for each section of the design such as Technology, Innovation, Air Power, The People of Canada along with the heritage and history. There are lots of detail and accents such as the maple leaf on the undercarriage, and the 100 decals. You'll also notice several aircraft detailed on the livery too from modern RCAF aircraft painted on the outside of the port side of the vertical stabiliser and heritage aircraft on the starboard vertical stabiliser featuring a CF-100 Canuck, CF-86 Sabre, Canadair North Star and an Avro Lancaster.
The display pilot of the CF-18 Hornet is Captain Caleb “Tango” Robert of 425 (Alouettes) Tactical Fighter Squadron at 3 Wing, Bagotville, Quebec.
To finish off the display, a special flypast to celebrate 100 years of the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) with a CF-188 Hornet and a Spitfire Mk V which served with the RCAF during WW2. EP120 is a very special Spitfire with with an impressive 7 confirmed kills. She was built at the Castle Bromwich factory where she was probably test flown by the legend that was Alex Henshaw and later served with 402 Canadian RCAF.
What are the differences between Canada's CF-18 Hornet and the usual F-18 Hornets? Well the CF-18 are carrier airframe Hornets (but not used on carriers) with a few modifications. The really cool difference is primitive but very effective; a false canopy! There is a painted false canopy directly underneath the fuselage of the Hornet, right below the real cockpit. The idea is cause confusion when engaging in dogfights, causing some disorientation to enemy pilots. Pilots engaging in dogfights rely on keeping a physical visual lock on their opponent, so seeing the fake cockpit would confuse or disorientate their opponent. The RCAF decided to keep all of the features that come standard as a carrier jet such as carrier strengthened tailhook, reinforced landing gear and even the folding wings.
