We forgot that this was the first “church” service! We forgot to pay homage to our ancestors! How do we go back?! We must go back!

I remembered this scene and searched high and low to find it. So glad someone posted it because I did not remember it was from Beloved. So...among all of the pain and suffering - there was this beautiful soul and she was a light - and the people had something to hold on to and for. Some of us are meant to be that light in our families and communities. We may not know it at first but perhaps seeing this will help others see their role of the light bringer where it is most needed to those around them. Amen and amen again.

@It's Okay And now you responding to this five years later, reminds me to continue being the light. Especially now with so much uncertainty and pain in the world, I don't have much but what I do have I will share even more freely. Stay safe and if you are not a small business owner, please watch this and get inspired to do something out of your spare room, garage - a tent in the backyard - anything. This is the perfect time to become a small merchant, so that if we go through this again, we can still keep the lights on, water flowing and food on the table and break generational curses of poverty. Baby Shug would have wanted her descendants to own something of our own. Be well! ruclips.net/video/iEnyXHAv8tE/видео.html

This is called a "ring shout". It was a survival of indigenous African dance. White ministers in the South often placed a ban on it. The men and women arranged themselves in a ring. The music started, perhaps with a Spiritual, and the ring began to move, at first slowly, then with quickening pace. The same musical phrase was repeated over and over for hours. This produced an ecstatic state. Women screamed and fell. Men, exhausted, dropped out of the ring

I cried during all of the scenes with Baby Suggs. Beah Richards brought something so divine to this role. That sweet little laugh she had, the look of pride in her face...people always go on about how books are better than films, but I never agree. Not when there is such a presence given to a character by such an amazing portrayal.

The Ancestors had no liberties, including how and when they expressed themselves spiritually. Going into the woods away from WS was how they conducted uncensored praise and worship. The men would watch out for security threats; notice the way the men came from the outside, toward the center. Notice the circle they are in. They dancing, weeping... watch and listen.
Look up "Hush Harbors" to learn more about these gatherings.
Also, "Let The Circle Be Unbroken", by Marimba Ani looks at Africa spirituality and explains the Hush Harbors.

Yes,truly a beautiful scene. This movie haunts me still. I think that so many of Oprah's "supporters" couldn't love what they didn't understand. Parts they did understand caused them guilt. That wasn't the point of the film. This was a great film, totally forgotten on purpose.

Go to Randall Robinson's book, "The Debt". I can't recall the the exact page but it explains how most of us percieved this movie to be a comedy. This and other poignant scenes struck so deep into my soul that I wonder how Ms. Winfrey (along with the director) got the actors to protray them......Really soul bearing they are....

that would be nice but black people have put in alot of work into this country. we might have to struggle but we deserve to reap the benefits of being an American. too many blacks have shed blood in this country for us (blacks) to just walk away and move somewhere else. and Africa is a different environment than America. will African Americans be able to adjust in Africa just because we're black? i dont think so
