@@swagmonee5699Yep, both the Romanian and American committees had agreed that all three gymnasts should just get the Bronze due to all the trouble that happened with judging. FIG just rejected it and IOC went along with it… (to completely strip the medal entirely from her, to return it). Thankfully, now the USAG and USOPC are fighting back against FIG and the courts related to the decision.. What an absolute mess for all three gymnasts involved and it’s just awful for their mental health.. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Touché. NOTHING can be taken away from her, because she deserved it. Worked all the way around it, long before one year prior towards training for this year's Olympics that already is said and over with.
Battling a rare kidney disease while being under a microscope WHILE training while being able to,is a whole other league.
Suni knows how she did it, overcame her fear of battling her own battles, and being able to remember that important part of Olympic history.
      Way to go,Suni! 👍😃✌️✌️

“sometimes you don’t think you’re even capable of winning anymore” as someone that developed a chronic ailment as a kid, i felt so seen by that. my disease absolutely wrecked my self confidence and i’ve been gaining it back little by little now that i’m older, (older than i was back then, but i’m still not even in my twenties yet) but that’s really how it feels. the sickness overtakes everything and steals the things you enjoy and hope you had for the future from you, until you wonder if it’s worth trying anymore. it’s so difficult to get back up again, to keep trying sometimes. it feels like you’re no longer capable of succeeding, like that has been robbed from you.

@@KateLate____ i feel that. some days it just feels like there isn’t a point because every time you get better, there’s another low waiting just around the corner. especially because i know i will never get better, it can only get worse. though i do think it has made me more resilient, empathetic and driven (last one seems a bit paradoxical, i know.)
as you said, i’m sick of being sick, it’s exhausting to always be exhausted, of having my 100% on any give day never actually equal 100. you’re not alone, even though it feels like it. i believe in you

@@averagetomfoolery I think the important point is I'm not dying any time soon, and I want to have the fullest life possible. That's not climbing a mountain, but it's still having work and friends and hobbies and keeping moving.
A acquaintance from a previous job, i have been following on linkedin. She has stage 4 cancer. Somehow she's pushing through pain to run her business, raise her child, and stay fit. I can't comprehend how she does it. She's in a worse situation than me, but can do more than me. I think it's because she's already in pain, and pushing doesn't bring more pain. Whereas pushing always brings me pain. In fact I had 4 muscles tears, sprains and strains last year, all from listening to people who pushed me. All of them reduced my walking speed and endurance. I'm talking like I couldn't walk more than a few blocks for a few months. That was hugely impactful in my life, both the pain and the limitation.
I used to love this "push on" mindset and I feel like a loser for having to let it go, and I still wonder if I've made the right decision. I guess that's why I got hurt 😂

    • @averagetomfoolery
      @averagetomfoolery 2 месяца назад +11

@@KateLate____ i get that, and i agree. for me, i developed an autoimmune disease as a kid and neither my parents nor the doctors believed me when i said i was in pain, it took over half a decade after i started raising concerns before i got any answers, and they’re not conclusive because my disease has gone into remission. (an autoimmune disease is when your immune system attacks your own cells, so my body is essentially permanently scarred from the inside out and the damage has affected my skeletal structure and joints irreparably.)
i don’t remember what it feels like not to be in pain, i don’t even know if there was ever a time i wasn’t. i don’t think so, if i’m being honest, the signs have been there since i was a toddler, i think i only noticed when i did because i suddenly got worse. think of it like the whole boiling frog thing, if you’ve always been in pain and it just slowly increases, that’s your normal and so it doesn’t ring any alarm bells until the “temperature”, in this case pain, increases too quickly.
i let my disease stop me for a very long time, but not anymore. it took my childhood, i won’t give it my future, too. i still struggle to feel motivated, to feel like there’s a point, but taking back the things it took from me has definitely helped.
i missed so much school because of my disease, but now i’m studying science at one of the best schools in my city. seeing that i can not only keep up despite having had less opportunities than my peers, but even excel and get really good grades has definitely helped. i think my experience has made me more well rounded and capable of handling adversity. it has taken a lot from me, but how i have learned to deal with it has given me a lot, too. i don’t think i’d like the version of myself that never got sick as much, the experience has been so fundamental in my development that i wouldn’t view the world the way i do without it. when i was unable to leave my bed due to how sick i was, i missed the feeling of the wind and sun against my skin; that feeling of something akin hugged that comes with sun-rays hitting your face, especially in winter. those are things i now appreciate in a way i didn’t before. i loved those before i got sick, sure, but i took them for granted.
i think i appreciate things most other teens and even adults wouldn’t, you can’t miss something you’ve always had. for me, i do want to see the world, i want to travel because i know that option will likely not be there for me one day. i decided some time ago to live the life i had always felt my disease stole from me, to prove to myself that i am more than what it took and that i don’t need to settle for what is easy or live within my means. that i still get to dream, it can’t take that from me. in fact, i would say being in a position where i felt as though i couldn’t has made me determined to do so much more than i likely would’ve otherwise.
i have my lows, of course, but i don’t wallow in them. they have their time and place, but so do the moments of acceptance and perseverance. i don’t always need to push on, i have to let myself grieve and rest when i need to, but i also don’t need to punish myself further by only grieving. i can move at my own pace, whatever that is at the moment, as long as i move eventually.

I love Suni! I, too, woke up swollen all over my body one day and went to urgent care. They said it was an allergic reaction. Gave me some steroids to help get my weight down, as everything was just water weight. My weight went back to normal. A couple of weeks later, i again woke up to a swollen body, but have gained even more weight. Within the span of a couple of days, i went from 125 to 160! Finally went and got some testing done and even got a biopsy done and after two months, i was diagnosed with a kidney disease. During the time i was swollen and was waiting for results, i took medication to help me urinate as it was difficult and output was little. As ive said before, everything was water weight. My blood pressure was high. I was miserable and wanted to die. Thankfully, we caught it early and medication helped. I did stop taking medication due to me being unknowingly pregnant with my third child and my symptoms magically went away(as i couldnt take any meds while pregnant). I praise God and the doctors for this.
Suni is such an inspiration and such a hard worker! My entire body was in pain from the extra weight. So i can imagine a gymast having a hard time. And maybe im biased too but we're the same ethnicity! Go Suni Lee! ❤️❤️❤️

I’m so glad she was able to be well enough to compete. I need to stress that the issue wasn’t her weight, but the kidney disease. Though undisclosed, rapid weight gain in the setting of kidney disease is almost always edema. And more importantly, buildup of urea and inability to clear electrolytes like potassium which can be life threatening. The dietary restrictions are difficult for anyone (protein and electrolyte restrictions) let alone an elite athlete

I definitely understood her thought in never being able to win anymore. She’s such a Great gymnast and I’m so happy she won!!! I too live with that thought daily and will be admitting myself to the hospital once I get back from a different state as I DESPERATELY NEED mental health care & at this point idc if I am broke achieving it. I live with metal rods in my spine that go from my neck down to my hips and am dealing with severe chronic pain every second of everyday. Dealing with sickness or pain makes life so hard. You stop seeing the little things that make life so beautiful because you’re constantly in a very depressed mental state over your problems, and are just living in survival mode- getting to the next day or even the next hour, struggling to find a reason to continue on. Life becomes almost grey and it becomes impossible to to see blessings that could literally slap you in your face. Living with severe pain like I do makes life worth unliving. I want to get back to being happy, blessed, apart of life etc so admitting myself is the best step to take currently.

In my opinion, Suni is one of the few American gymnasts who combined athleticism with beautiful artistry.

She’s my favorite gymnast from the American team. She performs with an elegance found in older gymnastics that’s lost with a lot of newer athletes.
