- In this video I visit the Derasar in Potters Bar, U.K. and learn a bit about Jainism. I bring my friend Amberish! I do not favour any religion over the other, I respect all religions. If I make any mistakes in this video I very much apologise.

Jain temples are rich in art and history, one of the oldest yet most prosperous Jain community is known to have preserve their thousands years old culture unaltered to this date. Truly non-violent and peaceful religion and it's reflected in everything related to Jainism be it temple or a Jain laymen. Quite ancient to Buddhism and quite parellel to Hinduism this religion find its roots in even pre-vedic era. I'm glad that such a beautiful temple exists in UK, there are many grand temples like this in United States but it's pleasing to see this derasar of potters bar standing so beautifully with all its glory.

Wonderful Video, Lali...Some additional information to add to what you described
- Derasar - It is what Gujarati community calls Jain Temples. The word is probably derivation of Devgraha-vasara (meaning Residence of Gods)
- The Jain philosophy believes time to move in eternal cycles, with each cycle being considered a cosmic age. Each cosmic age would have 24 Tirthankaras (Tirthankar means somebody, who has conquered the cycles of life and death, and now has the knowledge to help lead others to that). The number 24 is pre-determined, and governed by position of celestial objects. Hence, exactly 24 (Neither less, nor more). In the current cosmic age, Rishabhdeva is considered the 1st and Mahavira the 24th. That being said, for Jains, all Tirthankaras are important in their own right,
A possible reason for Mahavira to be considered more important (More true for Non-Jains, than Jains) may be that there are some evidences of his presence on earth, in terms of recorded history. He's a contemporary of Gautam Buddha, and has more evidences of presence. The others are farther back in time, in pre-historic era as well.
- The temple where you went to, has idols, with eyes open, and idols with crowns. This is generally in case of Shwetambara Temples. Digambara Temples have idols without crowns, and eye closed (Digambaras, and Shwetambaras are two main groups within Jainism, and both of them have further sub-groups, some of whom believe in idol-worship and some that do not). So, this, in all likelihood would be a Shwetambara temple
- The innermost sanctum, is generally closed to all, except for Pooja (or worship), by those following a strict protocol. The protocols govern what should be prayer clothes, and how you should prepare before coming for Pooja.
- Ahinsa (Non-Violence) is more of a philosophy, extending to all areas of life. It of course, means, not killing living beings (the simplest manifestation), but also means non-wastage of food (It is believed, that there is some inevitable hinsa in food preparation, and as way to limit that, there's emphasis on not wasting food).

This is beautiful!!!...the carved architecture reminds me Dilwara Temple in Mount Abu, India..had a chance to visit the temple during my boarding school days there..Dilwara however was entirely of white marble.. 🙃 one of closest friend is Rajasthani Jain and I love and the food they make at home no potatoes, onions, garlic etc...the satvic feel 🥰 so tastyyy...

Veganism and respect for all animals, environment are very much practiced by jains. Look up temple buildings and how they are built, its very interesting as well as the Ahimsa hand that points you in the direction to the temple.

hi lali i'm a jain myself it is among the oldest religion in india there were numerous jain king in the past like amoghvarsha kharvela indra chandra gupta maurya samprati rani abbakka king kon pandiyan and many more it was all over india in the ancient times still there are some jain exist but due to persecution and invasion jains are very less now thanks for visting jain temple

I'm very proud of the fact that Jainism Buddhism Hinduism Sikhism all 4 Sanatani religions originated in Our motherland BHAARAT. And All other religions also flourished in India
6:40, Eggplants is not eaten by jains. Even though it is a plant, but it contains a whole lot of seeds and that's why its prohibited and not eaten by Jains.

I suggest you start with short stories of author Premchand. His stories are an entire universe of their own.
Ooooh I never heard of that author, I’ll look into it. I bought a Harry Potter book in Hindi but never got past the 2nd page 😔 it was so hard!
@@LondonkiLali well novels are meant to make good use of the language they are written in, so they might seem a little hard at First.
Premchand was born in colonial India and his works are very useful in understanding how life was in the colonial era.
His works have had a very deep impact on me. His short stories of barely 5 pages have made me cry like a little baby. Premchand is regarded as the best modern hindi writer.
There are animated versions of his stories available on youtube, these videos are targetted at kids, so I think the language used in them will be easy to understand.
I hope you give it a try.
