Alto Saxophone Soloist:

Diversion was composed in 1943 while Bernhard Heiden served in the US Army band during WWII in Germany. In a career that would span roughly six decades, he was to become an influential voice in writing for the saxophone. After returning from the war, Diversion, was accepted by a major publisher but was inopportunely misplaced by the company and the deal was ultimately scuttled. In the 1980’s a former student of Heiden, Michael Cunningham, was given a personal copy of the pencil manuscript and told, “If you want to make parts and copy out the score, you are perfectly welcome. I don’t want to be involved with that piece anymore, you know, after thirty year.” and as the saying goes, “the rest is history”
