DOOM game on ZX Spectrum

- Yes, I know many people has uploaded this game's video on RUclips however last times some people can't believe the game works on regular ZX Spectrum 128K.
So it works. Therefore this video is different than others: on the beginning I loaded Computer Tester to display what machine is that (ZX Spectrum 128+). Then I reset it and loaded DOOM game via diskdrive.
Yes, it slows down when a hero opens the door (it's because Russian Spectrum - Pentagon - has a bit more tacts on its 3,5Mhz CPU) but still works fine on normal ZX Spectrum 128 and its 3,5Mhz CPU.
However please don't expect Pentium effects. :)
That's still old good ZX Spectrum 8-bit computer.
It's a game for diskdrive but if You wanna load and test it on real Spectrum128, then there has been made a snapshot:
mbeep.republika.pl/doom.mp3 - Развлечения
absolutely amazing, people just dont realize how capable this machine really was
true
The enemies actually turn around unlike the SNES version.
I think they also turn around in the original PC version and ports made since the PS1?
Sometimes it's hard to tell where madness ends and genius begins.
It's 1985 and Sinclair's new 128k model comes bundled with this.
What a Christmas that would have been.
that music is so awesome
The music in this version of doom is amazing!!!!
That music's an actual banger
Can’t stop dancing.
I liked this music
Love the OS red boot screen... like something out of Terminator or Robocop. 😆
I think the same, it really excites.
I was going to say this looks like crap, but then I looked at the hardware specs and couldn't figure out how they pulled off as much as they did. I wouldn't want to play it myself, Brutal Doom has spoiled me, but as far as the ZX Spectrum goes this is friggin' awesome.
You think that's awesome?
Sandisk Clip Zip can play Doom on it's little 96x96 display if you install Rockbox.
...
Yeah.
Kaka carrot cake
***** Smaller display = easier job.
Not even to speak of the San Disk's 80MHz 32bit CPU va, the Spectrum's 3,5MHz 8bit CPU!
That's about 90times the performance on the Zips's side, while still only considering CPU. So what's awesome?
Ali Arib
it's TINY?
***** Sandisk Clip Zip (and almost every other MP3/MP4 player with color screen) is a lot more powerful than the Spectrum: they use to mount a 60 to 100 MHz 32-bit ARM CPU rated at 60 to 100 MIPS, while the Spectrum uses a 3.5 MHz 8-bit Z80, capable of up to *one* MIPS. Also, the screen resolution for the Spectrum is much higher (256 by 192), so it has to paint five times more pixels every frame. That's why this is really awesome :-) .
This should've been the launch title of the machine, back in '82 ;)
This looks pretty nice for a ZX Spectrum and nice chiptune music theme, guess the audio channel is not available for sound effects ^^;
+Gato303co I guess so, unless they'd be made on beeper.
+yerzmyey Take my *thumbsup* 👍 since votes are disabled ;-)
This shouldn't even be remotely possible. Really good job!
Holy cow, check out that rockin' theme!
+SuperJustinChannel so damn catchy !... I would like to listen to the whole thing
This music is amazing!
i feel HUGE lack of 'LOVE' button beween LIKE and DISLIKE.
Although i am more Commodore fan, i can tell whether something is good or not. Definetely this implementation of Doom as well as its music completely ROCKS
ABSOLUTELY TECHNO
The soundtrack be OFF THE CHAIN THOUGH. I mean that holy shit I love this XD
Is rtx on?
Не ожидал) если бы застал спектр в своё время, эта игра была бы одной из ходовых. Музончик крутой кстати
Still better than Call of Duty.
I can hear AVGN's voice screaming...
DOOM ON THE ZX SPECTRUM ?!
I think this engine would be better suited to Wolfenstein
But then you can't claim your running doom on a zx spectrum
anyone here because of the AVGN?
Yup. Couldn’t believe it could play on a spectrum
✋️
me
I am cry about music...
I came here because of a doomworld post.
Doom in a club!
Music cool
😎
I feel the same lol
Better than 32x music
incredible work, am amazed at how fully this seems to work
The music is so great in this game it's like retro
+Hanh Nguyen It's on an old computer with simple music capabilities.
Is there a way to get this soundtrack because it's amazing!
its free give it
Had ZX as my first computer. Never heard music as good as this 👍
The BGM is still awesome as hell !
Alright this is actually pretty good for a zx FUCKING SPECTRUM
Thanks for presenting this - it's amazing what the speccie could achieve!
Not sure ti'd be as much fun as Dynamite Dan or Attic Attack but sure looks good :)
I can't believe this is an actual port.
Awesome!
The Calculator version was great as well 👍
Да, было время, убил несколько дней на эту демо-игру двадцать лет назад.
music
I'm sure I liked this video 14 years ago. 🤔🤔🤔
WTF? why is this music so JAMMIN!?
agreed, this is snes donkey kong 1 or golden axe on the genesis level of hard driving beats.
Hell, yeah! Speccy forever! Still play it.
Nice music!
So many games I never realised got ported to the spectrum.
Wow, even booting the computer is cool.
It's like from the point of view of terminator.
Exactly what i thought
Fantastic! Amazing we can still squeeze more technical chicanery out of these old machines...Now just waiting on Rage for the Vic 20.
The music at 2·20 then 3·30 is brilliant
YES
Impressive, it's really amazing what alot of the old 8-bit computers like the speccy and the c64 were really capable of
Its amazing how far gaming has come, respect to the beginning stages.
Awesome music!!!
That soundtrack is kinda better than E1M1!
Nice, dude. There were also several "Windows-like" desktops for ZX Spectrum but finally I think the best are "NortonCommander-like" GUIs for ZX.
Then I guess Crysis is out of the question?
I loved my spectrum, but this game was virtually unplayable....
Fantastic work. Just speechless...
This is mad impressive!
It's definitely an upgrade on the C64 version that I saw.
that's really well made omg
WOW!
if only this could have been available back in '82!
Amazing stuff, AND our 3 month old loves the soundtrack!,
soundtrack is amazing :-)
I miss the days when FPS had more colour than black, grey & brown.
Thanks for showing this game.
Would be hard o implement a strafe command?
This is amazingly cool!
Might I ask if you could re-upload the mp3? I'd love to play this on my 128k
This is absolutely amazing....and listen to that music!
man the ZX can pump some good tunes, the castlevania soundtrack on the the ZX is amazing too
HEAVY CHIPTUNE MIX BRO!! XD
Techno-Doom
It's like running Battlefield 5 on the Neo Geo.
@herzmeister Great explanation! I always wondered about that but never brought myself to research it. Thanks!
Hey, the music is damn good! It's awesome.
Loved the music!
I always am inspired by the ingenuity of coders in situations like this, some people can make hardware do backflips if the will is there, a way can often be found, things that to some extent seem when suggested an impossible idea on such a platform. long live the coder.
Absolutely amazing
i like this soundtrack better than the original
Hi, yes - it is actual ZX music. It is PSG, which means it uses AY chip.
That's a pretty rockin' take on the first level theme
Does anyone have the track that plays during gameplay or knows it's name?
+SpiralPegasus see my comment above
For the Spectrum this looks and sounds awesome
this is just awesome. love this game
This soundtrack has gotta be some of the worlds very first techno
No, very first techno was created at the beginning 90's and game is from 1996. Some composers tried to make such soundtrack for video game but only on Amiga it sounded good back then. Good example is Project X and Stardust soundtrack.
Ahh, see theres my mistake, i was thinking this was from the early 80s
I am curious about the potential success of a monochrome version on the Atari ST.
Seems like it'd be hard to judge distance in this. But that soundtrack is kick-ass. I want a midi of it. Or at least a youtube upload of it.
There may be no sound effects, but the excellent music more than makes up for it!
That's a Fucking heavy SoundTrack Dude.
WOW ❗❗ 😮😮😮
💖💖💖
I like the song
Pretty amazing music for such a port.
Nice music! That would sound incredible if an actual band did a cover of that with real instruments.
Sheer excellence.. mind blown
The music is badass here. :)
I don't know if someone will read this comment, but here's the in-game music:
zxtunes.com/author.php?id=453&play=11838
Sweet, thanks!
Wait... this is sweet, but what's an .ftc file? I've never heard of that before, how do you play it?
@0GBrooklyn It looks like it's rendered at character resolution, since there's no colour clash. But the ZX Spectrum's single screen mode was 256x192 bitmapped, with 8x8 colour cells overlaid. 2 colours per cell.
So the Speccy doesn't have a character mode. It's all done bitmapped. I imagine tho that the tex-mapping is done by placing predefined 8x8 blocks. Looks like that.
I miss music like this. Bring it back, damnit!
I would love to play this version on ZDoom. Somebody get on that!
@thanatoutheosJr The ZX Spectrum used a regular audio cassette tape for storage. You would use a mono (or left-stereo only) headphone jack to plug it in. While loading you would hear a whistling sound, a bit like old 56k-baud modems (they were used to connect to the Internet before ADSL/Broadband).
The jammin music has to be the best thing to come out of this.
It is also a 4-bit sound chip. It's called AY. As for the game, it was a "home brew" game, as far as I know.
@TrevHead10 Here in Spain, before I had internet access, I used to buy computer mags to obtain software. One of them is Micromania, in it's DVD, besides game demos and driver/DirectX updates included a full oldie (~5-10 years) game. It got me interested in The Gothic saga far before Arcania.
It's limited, but the fact that this was accomplished at all is amazing.
thats beautiful.
what is the music's name, though?
+tribemaster101 find here the one with name DOOM_3:

+Tri Vosem Thank you!!
