Taranis X9D+ SE 2019 OpenTX Setup 2 Switches / 6 Flight Modes Special Functions & Logical Switches

  • I use what I believe to be the simplest and most logical method for programming your Taranis X9D, X9D+, X9D+ SE or X9D Plus 2019 Transmitter or similar remote control transmitter to use 2 switches for controlling six flight modes. This concept will work on any OpenTX based transmitter, though the exact method may be different.
This method takes your native analog switch positions as inputs into the Taranis. Switch combinations are defined as logical switches before a special function outputs exactly the right pwm for the flight controller. Everything is taken care of using a very simple combination of inputs, logical switches, and special functions, then outputs pwm values onto channel 5. Thsi is done using OpenTX Companion 2.3.2 I verify it working using Yaapu telemetry script for verification that the flight modes are changing.
Credit to Painless360 for the idea; and for the separation of switches to enable 6 flight modes from just two switches; one two position and one three position. This method builds on what he shows: • OpenTX Tip: 6 Position... but does not involve setting weights or offsets, and does not involve using calculations and curves. I believe this method uses as little resources as possible, better keeping channel activity clear for other data chains.

Thank you very much. The most simplest & logical way I have seen :)

This was quite possibly the most simple video I've found so far that explains setting up mode switches on the Taranis :) The one linked in the pixhawk documentation should probably be replaced by this one.
One thing that 'bothers' me though is the 'default' mode.. in QGroundcontrol, even though I've set up a delay between each mode on the TX, it flickers to Mode 4 before switching to the actually selected mode, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why.
And more thing . it doesn't to make a difference if I've set up any of the INPUTS or not (I'm using SA and SB on my QX7 for more switches) - even with both these inputs deleted, ch5 is still sending mode switches.

PS: I did have to use slightly different override values to hit every of the 6 flightmodes in QGC;: -100, -60,-15, 0, 12,37,100 (only the lower half had to be adjusted slightly, but that's easily verified in QGC while adjusting the values on the transmitter).

I actually ended up having to delete my delays and I wish I could remember the reason why. Flickering to Mode 4? Wish I had the answer for you. Maybe try removing the delays also?
One other thing I changed since this video was I removed the special functions which play the tracks for each flight mode. I did this because I've installed Yaapu telemetry script, and it plays the tracks when modes are changed. The benefit of using Yaapu to play the tracks is that the tracks only play when the flight controller actually changes modes, so it's a confirmation.

just subscribed, excellent tutorial my friend, like a guy asked below and never followed up, i wanted to ask if you can make a detailed tutorial on how to setup and use Yaapu script please (wiring and setup), thanks allot

I doubt I will get around to it, so: I used a cheap cable I got on ebay (about $12). Just search for Yaapu pixhawk cube or similar. Once you get the cable, use the instructions on the Yaapu script install instructions and follow carefully. That's the best I can do for now. Good luck. You can do it.

    Hello Vufinder, please help!
I followed your setup closely, Channel order TAER ; when moving the RUDDER Stick the AILERONS Move, when moving the rudder stick the Ailerons move. Went into the Taranis x9d+ , switched the order in Inputs, Mixes and outputs. NO Change.
I have all 6 modes , sound etc. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Bruce

Somehow you've got your channels mixed up/different from mine, it sound like. Maybe look into re-assigning your channels. There are several viable ways of doing it, I believe. The Ardupilot forum might help - lots of good helpful people there. It's where I also go for help.

Can you share where you got the Sound files from? I have been searching and can only find ones that are either half recorded or dont have all the sounds for all the modes.

I made custom recordings for my sound files that I use manually, and then plugged in the most common voice replacement for the rest. It's been a while, so I don't remember the name of the voice files, but it's the most common one out there.
