Ryan Liu No, Wonderboy is too nice a guy to do that to. Icy Mike is a good guy deep down. Only a complete prick would intentionally be a prick to WB...like Tyron Woodley
We are lucky to live in an age with all these sensei's and teachers willing to share this Information for free. What is your favorite or perfered counter to wild hooks Sir? Thank you , and God bless
""You need good hips to play chess"" You do. It's called "sitzfleich," literally the flesh on which one sits. It is also known as chair glue. To have sitzfleisch means the ability to sit still for the long periods of time required to be truly productive; it means the stamina to work through a difficult situation and see a project through to the end. Without "good hips" in this sense your success as a chess player will be severely limited. I do not know how the Thompson family found out about "good hips" in chess.
You dad. He's the man, same hook than i used in my boxing time 12 years. Was for me a ko tool.. And a lots of trainers, tried to make me change my hook for the other one than your father explain, the danger to brake you hand... Thanks a lot.. Love your stuff, .Your kicking ability is amazing..
"Hips are the key"..Twerk it using all your harnessed hip energy 😂😂😂TORQUE nahhh...TWERK OR TWEEK the hips whatever best works for you! This totally made my Tuesday..I absolutely adore this family and their sense of humor😂😂 #wonderboybewhereitsat #wonderboythebestthebaddest #wonderboyfan4eva #respectandrecognize #bringontheoctagonandbringbackthewonderwalk #canwecloneyouyet
I like this one. I often find in boxing sparring my guard is not as strong as it should be against a hook. I am always aiming to roll under it / step out of range but I don't always manage that. If I get hit with the hook I usually have my glove there but it doesn't do much to soften the blow. I was looking for something relating to blocking a solid hook when I found this video. This is not exactly what I was looking for but you've given me a few other things to try :-).
I’ve been throwing my hooks vertically for as long as I can remember and one of the instructors at my gym corrected me, said I should make a horizontal fist… I’m glad to see im not the only who thinks vertically makes the most sense
Yeah my coach has always said to throw hooks with your thumbs towards the ceiling lol but ig for some people it's personal preference to do it differently
@Andrew Love the "Fedor"/Russian casting hooks! He throws them so fast one after the other! They are not so easy to learn though, imo.A bit of an awkward feel to them initially.
Nice one Stephen! I like this counter. Always the best advice. But let's talk about your next fight. I want u to have ufc gold by next year this time .. atleast
ah straight out of training to check the technique of the day! Perfect! Love to see your fights man...best training/info/entertainment channel out there!
How does one counter the lead hook? (as opposed to the rear hook shown in the video) I find this counter is difficult for a lead check hook because there's less time to see it coming and get inside/in range. Love your work my man!
I love how u present the information where you don’t come across as an arrogant i know everything but like if u are learning with the lesson as well, like when ur dad says u can elbow your like that’s right MMA or how u ask now am I keeping the hook tight , I think the information presents better when you throw those lead in questions even though u know the answer
0:48 nice fight choreography! I thought Stephen really got tagged for just a second 😁 Ps- you can’t interchange ridgehand with karate-chop! That would make the master Papa Karate-Chop... and that’s just, nope.
Wonderboy I saw a video one video of Sensei Dwane from Bang Muay Thai talking about now extending your elbow in a punch. To save your joints, taking care of them in the long run. Also I have seen videos of Tyson when he punches he doesnt extend his arm at times. Would love to hesr your input.
Really laughed at melon knuckles. I've a melon head. I'm tryin' to get on Mr. T's level. No I ain't. Please don't ever hit me Poppa Ridge Hand, love ya man!
For those who cannot get their lead hand high enough to block because they are hands low style fighters emphasizing vision as defense, a better, fancier solution to this is to somersault inwards the moment the opponent throws the overhand, rolling in and away from the overhand right, simultaneously ankle picking the opponent's lead leg like Tony Ferguson to establish a dominant position while on the ground. because the opponent's force is heading clockwise when throwing the overhand, it is extremely easy to use that momentum against them while ankle picking their lead leg - a perfect Wing Chun principle of attacking and defending simultaneously. No wonder Tony Ferguson is among the greatest fighters of all time!
The initial parry looks similar to the good ol' age empi elbow strike you learn in week one karate, and by itself can be pretty darn effective. Paul Felder cracked Alessandro Ricci at FN 105 with the elbow while intercepting a jab, shattering Ricci's nose and setting up the finishing sequence. Simple but devastating.
Like father like son thanks wonder boy we need to see you doing for us and explain fighter technique and slow motion study for us let’s start with lyoto or Anderson Silva 🙏🏻

Oh I though he said "you need good hips to do chest" as in chest workouts. It still fits anyways
The master with the father!!! Aka...the grandmaster! Masterfully skilled family
Great to have Papa T. in on this one! 👏 Glad to be able to learn from you guys, even from a distance!
Love that wonderboy asks questions, always a student and learning!!

00:57 flashbacks of that Pettis fight just went thru Stephen’s head. Lol “Guilty” 😂
Stephen didn't eat a hook though.
Anguel Roumenov Bogoev watch the fight again. Superman hook
I thought it was a straight too, rewatched it tho and can confirm it’s a hook

First time I have seen one of those striking dummies with arms on them. Seems very practical and useful, especially for counters.

Love it. Being a boxing loyalist I was always for horizontal fist with the hook. Papa T makes good points. I'll try out vertical a bit on the bag.
Horizontal fist for medium distance, vertical fist for close range. That's what I always did for years and I never damaged my hands.
An awesome Technique Tuesday. Escaping on an angle is very important.
I’ve been throwing my hooks vertically for as long as I can remember and one of the instructors at my gym corrected me, said I should make a horizontal fist… I’m glad to see im not the only who thinks vertically makes the most sense

They have tremendous range (casting hooks) and can sneak past the guard.
Great vídeo bro
Beautiful. Just beautiful. A family not only of martial artists but excellent teachers as well. Much love and respect. Peace❤🙌✌
Always hyped to watch these videos
Btw 1st
Nice one Stephen! I like this counter.
Always the best advice. But let's talk about your next fight. I want u to have ufc gold by next year this time .. atleast
This deserves more subs. Great info as usual
Totally can throw that elbow in there - wonder when you throw the hook, the elbow can follow the fist? ? Nice move.
@I offer u this 👏👏🤣 Ha ha how did you know I love El Cucuy (besides Chael of course)🤣
Beautiful combinaison for boxing, or Muay Thai good job sir!
Great video!!! Keep the boxing videos coming so we can put them together with the great kicks you have provided
Next time I visit my family in Myrtle Beach I definitely need to pop up to Pitch Black and work the hips..
Much love from the UK Stephen!
Stephens dad has to be a great guy. Raising a world champion who’s humble and nice must require so much character
at 3:44: The blonde guy training with the white T-shirt looks very much like Bo Nickal!
Roberto Richardson I thought it was him at first
Who?
Roberto Richardson pretty sure it is
Thank you wonder boy & pops. Love these videos I can use
ah straight out of training to check the technique of the day! Perfect! Love to see your fights man...best training/info/entertainment channel out there!
Amazing technique for a street fight or MMA. Once again you hit the nail on the head when it comes to technique.
I’m an oldie now, but I use to fire a hook counter off the same arm that covered. Always caught them out.
Please do more videos with your dad!!!
This was an epic video. South Carolina represent.
How does one counter the lead hook? (as opposed to the rear hook shown in the video)
I find this counter is difficult for a lead check hook because there's less time to see it coming and get inside/in range.
Love your work my man!
I wish I lived in S.C. I’d definitely be a student at Upstate Karate. If I learn this much from RUclips, I know I’d learn a lot in person.
Thank you guys really appreciate the knowledge you giving 🤛
Great dad produced great son. Im so happy for you guys. Subbed

Ayyyyy there's that saying from Mission Impossible,"Those who can't do, teach" and this boi out here doing both and killing it at both!!!

We all appreciate you, Brother. Very well and good, exceptional
Hey wonderboy, can you make a video on timing your move drill and countering attack drill next videos?
Love this, didn't know you had this going on. I'm definitely subscribing Mr Wonderboy! =]
You can also counter with a hook when you block. You want to block then through the hook to mix it up.
VERY cool!
One of my favorites!
Thank you for these videos, Wonderboy! Love it when Mr. Thompson drops those #knowledge #bombs! Cheers and love from Canada!
Quick question for wonder boy, would you try to block fedors hook with this technique?
Ty for the knowledge, love from triad
Wonderboy could u make a video on ways to defend headkicks ??
Wonderboy I saw a video one video of Sensei Dwane from Bang Muay Thai talking about now extending your elbow in a punch. To save your joints, taking care of them in the long run. Also I have seen videos of Tyson when he punches he doesnt extend his arm at times.

Good stuff particular hand position on hook avoiding the little knuckles
Love how it’s eye view , plus I’m y’alls height so it felt like a hands on just from watching 👊🏼
If this was bare knuckle would you block the same way? How do you handle the concern that the fist might slip through your blocking arm?
This is now the 5th time subscribing in 5 different phones
Thanks Stephen Thompson
