Hi Sensei Tim i was fortunate to have studied under Master Tatsuo Suzuki when i was 16 years old for around 3 years i have never lost his spirit stays within me constantly much of my experiences was one to one at the cost of £5 an hour his courage and speed was dynamic the class was around 30 when i reached my 6Kyu first green belt there was only 6 or seven of us and the stories of black eyes broken ribs and blood was quite common im still a practitioner and student of the art forever learning about myself
Hi Victor! Wow, I'm jealous you got to study with him. I never had the privilege to do so. I am proud to say though I can count Sensei Mathieu Beysen as one of my friends... I know Suzuki must have been something when he was alive, a true master... Thank you for sharing!
I did a seminar with him in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. I had a copy of Black Belt magazine from January 1969 the mouth and year I was born and he was on the cover, so I had him sign it. Was amazing.
My dear Tim Sensei... Nobody knowing who Suzuki Sensei was can talk about him without bowing. I am honoured to be a second generation student of Suzuki Sensei. My wado ryu Sensei I mean was a direct student. But still when my Sensei told us about Suzuki's direct teachings the atmosphere in the dojo became heavily silent like his spirit was there with us and though I am sceptical about supernatural events the feeling in the hall was palpable. "He was a true samurai", my Sensei used to say and I have no reason to not believe it.
There’s nothing in the texts I used to write this to dispute that! Everything I found about him can be put into the three categories I used in the thumbnail: Purity, Loyalty and Respect. If he was only half the man the stories about him seem to reflect, then that would already make him a legendary martial artist! It was a pleasure to perform the research into Hanshi Suzuki.
hironori otzuka, tatzuo suzuki, fukazawa, are the line of succession of true karate do wado ryu, they are an inspiration for any karate practitioner, they immortalized one of the 4 karate styles of Japan, wado ryu is the best, hai.
Who now is the greatest living Wado Ryu master? Tatsuo Suzuki gave me my brown belt in 1985, I found my old licence the other day. He was quite old then and whenever I saw him he didn't do much. Sakigami was phenomenal!
He was without doubt a true master, i have trained over the years with many so called masters, from wado, and other styles, but very few are true masters [even some 9th 10th japanese teachers], i can only name 3, suzuki wado, fay goodman iaido, and phillip holmes kuk sool won, they all have a rare quality that few people have, their stuff is sometimes raw, but masterful, where other masters have perfect technique, but just lack that special something, its really hard to put your finger on it. But if you are lucky enough to have trained with suzuki, you will know what i mean, he changed my martial arts life.
Hello Tim, I hope you are fine 🙏🙏 in the video you mention that karateka from various dojos and schools competed against each other...I vaguely remember an interview of my Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro and a passage from O Sensei Nagamine's book "Essence of Okinawan Karate Do" why kumite in some dojos not only internally, but also outside of the training from a certain point in time...let's say they were "not welcome"...so forbidden...have you heard or read anything about this?
Salvatore!! I was wondering when I would hear from you again! Long time 😉 As for your question: I haven’t heard of this interview, but let me theorise… So Suzuki’s story is based on his own recollections as a Japanese Karateka in the fifties and sixties. It is entirely possible that he trained and fought in entirely different environments than Nagamine. Don’t forget Nagamine was Okinawan, in my recollection he did not have as much of a presence in mainland Japan as for example Funakoshi. So I think this is the reason for this discrepancy
trained wad ryo for 23 years ,i might hav etrained with him in aswedish karate camp in stockholm, and once with damien dovi ? a french guy and musse hasselvall in säffle good 23 years then wad ryo just went away what happend ?
I'm a jka shotokan practioner, 44 years so my comments are purely non biased Suzuki Sensei ranks in the top 10 of the greatest karate ka masters of the 20th Century. A judo kuri obi Full stop. Wado Karate furthermore is the most complete martial art as it encompasses jujitsu and kendo movements more than goju, shotokan or shito ryu. Ohtsuka Sensei was a master of jujitsu b4 he started karate. This is mythical stuff in reality. Infinitum oss

I grew up in Wado Ryu, and it has certainly shaped my karate!

Great question! I’m afraid I don’t know… for me Matieu Beysen is pretty legendary actually

Saluti dall'Italia, il mio maestro di wado era allievo di Sensei Suzuki
I did a karate stage with him
I am just wondering. Do You know why Higashi karate kai in UK broke from Wado Ryu? Was it politics?
