3:41 Yes, we Architects are pretty amazing. I have drawn things upside-down and backward for years. It is very common to be talking to a client from across the table. I have had a few comment that I was able to write upside-down so they could read as I wrote. Suggestions on the cat shelves: Considering the level of friction to reduce slipping balanced against ease of cleaning, you could consider a textured laminate for the shelves. Carpet was another suggestion made, however cleaning carpet on a 30cm shelf 3m in the air might get difficult. One could also use Velcro attached mats that could be pulled off and washed every so often. The 3D modeled view of the Living Room was familiar for a while back when you guys toured a model home (Toyota?) and they had beams running overhead. In the far corner of the outside wall (where the clerestory walls meet) consider creating a gap where the cat walk would make an 'L'. that gap will let light spill down at the corner, reduce dust accumulation and provide a location for the cats to drop down to a lower shelf or possibly other cat routes below. Rachel - you may like to research the fenestration treatments that use "Light Shelves" as these cat shelves can accomplish a similar effect. It is a simple way to deflect natural light deeper into a space by bouncing the light off the ceiling, creating a more diffuse light, and helping to reduce direct sun glare. The cat-hole through the wall would probably be best if held above the floor level of the upper story. (similar to the catalog image you point out) I would not make the hole flush with the floor and hold it at least above any baseboards a few centimeters. Jun - consider cat hair drifting down from above onto your food prep boards. Airflow can control some of this, but having shelves directly above food prep (like the catalogs warn) creates an issue you would quickly tire of cleaning repeatedly. Yes, cat hair gets everywhere, but you may not want to make it easier to for them to add "cat flavor" to a dish.

The little cat drawn on the architect's drawing of the shelves is so cute 😂 and my advice, make sure you can access your cat furniture semi-easily. If your cats are anything like mine, eventually they'll have some sort of accident up there that you have to clean up at 3am 😅

I don’t want to sound depressing, but perhaps you should plan for when your cats are elderly. Our eldest is 17 and while still active her legs are stiff. We restrict her to rooms where she cannot misjudge her abilities and fall (she still thinks she can walk the edge of the balcony). In her area cat designated vertical spaces are closer together with bigger landing platforms, all much lower to the ground. She slips on smooth surfaces so all landing spaces are carpetted or have a nonslip mat. The litter box is easy access with a low entry (or a ramp). Lots of sunny areas in her space and plug in heated mats. This was all put together slowly in response to slips, falls, and too fast descents. I don’t think this should affect your overall design, but perhaps you could think about how these could be implemented if needed one day and where.
That may depend on the cat. My grandparents cat got to 20 and she was pretty frail by the end. My grandparents didn't need to block anything off because the highest place she went was on chairs or the windowsill. Rachel and Jun will probably just have to keep an eye on the cats when they are older and see if they are the type to try get somewhere they probably shouldn't.
I was going to say this too. That pole to get to the top will be hell for an elderly cat. I understand that the point of it is to give them some exercise but imagine Haku age 16 wanting to go up and sun himself on the top floor... I suggest a spiral, carpeted, ramp that wraps around a pole, the climb itself would be lots of exercise for an elderly cat.
@@yoly_sky I'm sure they'll be able to DIY something like that when the cats get older, or even contact the builder, and have them install shelves on the pole. Keeping the cats active now is the best way to ensure their health in the future. Also, the way they keep acquiring cats, they might eventually need a house that can simultaneously accommodate elderly cats, and tire out a whippersnapper - otherwise the young cats will drive the old cats crazy!
They just need to make sure the high shelves are accessible from the second floor. So the cats will be able to just use human stairs to get down and up, if they like. And yes, no slip covering is essential. Even while they are young.
I know they said a few videos ago that they didn't want to like overwhelm us with housing videos. However, I am honestly loving these types of videos :D
6:58 actually that is about dead ends, make sure that your cat shelves always lead _somewhere_ so they don't have to turn around on that shelf if they don't want to.
I love their restrictions for where you can build the cats walks, like no cat walks where they can just jump off a 10 foot drop. It’s almost like they’re saying “we know cats are stupid assholes and we’ve taken that into account so you don’t have to!”
Lol. I have a really high loft bed and when I'm climbing up at the same time a cat wants down they'll just yeet themselves off the bookshelf I use as a bedside table straight down to the floor.
YESSS. I gave my cat steps up to the top of my wardrobe. But does she use the sturdy boxes? Nooo. She's got to yeet herself off the side and land with a giant THUD. I swear I wince more than she does.
Also look up the laws in your area! A lot of people I've met in real life stated that they'd like a cat but their landlord doesn't allow it but here in Germany the law states that landlords aren't able to forbid small animals and cats count as small animals here. A lot of people just don't know that and landlords take advantage of that and pretend like they can do that.
@@minkamausi9285 Im actually pretty sure it was debunked that cats count as small animals. HOWEVER landlords cannot forbid you cats without a good reason. so not liking cats is not a good enough reason.
I feel the same, I've been in my 1room flat for 6 years, it's only 22 square meters, and I still don't have a cat because it will be a too small living space for him :'( (It's already too small for me, especially since the last years where we've been in two lockdowns and are on the verge of a third in France because of the pandemic 🥺 )
Coming from living in Japan, where people love cats, cat merchandise is everywhere, and seeing your house catalog full of options for cats - and now living in Korea where people are usually very scared of cats - is so strange. My in-laws absolutely hate cats and we have two. Every time they come over, they insist we lock them up and don't let them out, and if our nieces and nephews touch them, they get terrified of allergies and make them go wash their hands. I miss how much Japanese people revere cats and respect them, as opposed to how Korean people mostly dislike them. We do have some cat cafes and I've met other people with cats, too, but it's more rare. I'm so excited for your house and I can't wait to see what it all looks like with the kitties running around!! And Jun making sushi for them hahaha
Well, it might be due to the fact that cats and dogs are viewed as a delicacy in some parts of the country. But also in ancient Korean folklore, cats weren't portrayed in a very positive light. They'd often get associated with bad omens and bad luck, so historically cats were rarely found in Korean homes. Furthermore, cats were also viewed to be harboring (or manifestations) of bad spirits. Thankfully, the overall outlook has changed. What were once treated as harbingers of fear, bad luck, or evil, are now treated as well-mannered and affectionate house pets. The advent of the internet helped influence a change of heart towards cats. Now, South Korea's world-famous cat cafes have become popular attraction spots for tourists & locals alike, which has made the biggest shift for South Koreans to be more welcoming of cats. Today, they are the 2nd (though a distant 2nd) most popular pet in Korea, the first being dogs. So while they're not going to revere cats in the same way that Japan, Turkey, Egypt, Russia, and Greece have done, South Koreans (mostly the newer generations) are giving cats their much due admiration. I think with time, South Korea will continue to develop positive treatment of cats as older generations either evolve or die out.
To be any cat would be pretty cool. Being able to do whatever you want, go wherever you want. You answer to nobody. No work, just sleep and relax all day. Life entirely on your own terms.
Fair warning, make sure everything is easily accessible for cleaning/dusting! Nothing quite like trying to dust a catwalk and getting blocked by shortness...
jun shouldn't feel bad about his drawing, he was drawing in perspective and it's hard than the one the professional did. (the pro also had the paper with guide lines)
I've lately seen some cat shelves that have a clear bubble for kitties yo sleep there. It's like a shelve with a big round hole and something like a big clear bowl stuck inside, I find it soooooo cute
Those are my favourite! The little toe beans you can ogle from underneath...!! Judging from previous experience though, if I invested money into one, my cats would just end up completely ignoring it lol
in the winter, the cats will definitely be napping up high on those shelves. heat from the sun, and all the heat from the living room rising up and keeping them toasty. it's perfect! i saw there was a couch and some chairs for the humans haha, but this really is a cat house and that is so awesome!
@@Azura12378 It's their house, they both have a say in what it will be like. Also, I'm not sure how many times Jun has to explain that he's not extremely comfortable speaking English yet, so Rachel will often speak for both of them. Hope that helps
Building a house around the comfort of your cat is such a wild idea I'm amazed that Japan has so many options and examples and it's an actual thing. I love it! I wonder what the builders over here in Finland would say if I showed them a plan like that haha!
The ramp is definitely a good idea for when your cats get older. Mine is 18 and while she can still jump (and 100% will for food) she does appreciate when we make it easier for her.
I use to work in a cat cafe and the cats loved climbing on all the cat shelves and they also really enjoyed sleeping on cloth bridges that were added to the design! We also had a cat wheel for awhile, but only a few of the cats ever used it that I saw.
Oh, man. I want a t-shirt or mug or tote bag with those cat drawings from the catalogue at 6:30 onwards... including the text and technical specifications. They are SO COOL!!
My cat is 12 years old. Somehow he still is able to trot pretty fast and jump up on the porch. He goes crazy when my dad brings home a goose or duck, because he knows he will get the head. I love my cat, he is perfect.
My oldest cat is 16 and she's still out hunting mice and rabbits. Blows my mind! We think she might pass this year though sadly because she's starting to have bowel issues :(
sounds pricy and could be dangerous, doors shutting on their tail, it getting stuck, etc. Especially if it's closed off like an actual elevator where u can't check if everything is okay.
Evan and Katelyn did a live stream of designing their dream house, which involved lots of cat doors, catios, and other stuff integrated for the cats. They also did a video of building a cat wheel if you want to see how it's done.
This was a lovely thing to get out of the hospital to! Even going in for tests right now is a nightmare, but this really helped with my anxiety so thank you and hope you guys are having a lovely day
Wow, the section about cat safety and all that is amazing! They REALLY thought that out. Also, Haku and Poki are really cute. My heart can't handle the cuteness.
This would make jackson galaxy cry tears of joy! it also encourages people to keep their cats inside, which is incredibly important for the safety of the cats, and for the ecosystem.
I have a cat shelf type thing on my second floor, and I would 100% say put a barrier so they can’t fall off the second floor! My cat loves to sit up there and hasn’t fallen often but she did fall once, she is thankfully fine, she landed on a couch but it could’ve been much worse
If it indoors, they'll probably be fine. My old cat cat fell off an upstairs window ledge and landed on a paving slab below when he was about 18. He was ok.
@@thegearknob7161 Even if they have an 90% chance of being ok, that's still an 10% chance of a broken bone. And cat's are really good at hiding injuries and sickness.
@@chiara9767 Pfft. The way he lived, he must have had a stash of them somewhere! He was a rescue kitten for a start. Food obsessed and would eat everything. He stole half cooked chicken from BBQs and raided bins at midnight eating who knows what. He had nasty food poisoning about a dozen times. It nearly killed him on a few occasions. On top of that, he was big and intimidating and he knew it. In his old age he was still chasing off other cats in their prime. A neighbour caught him stealing food from foxes, even they wouldn't mess with him. He also survived being driven over, and I'm sure he fell from that window on another occasion too. Who knows what else he got up to. I know he used to go out of his way to troll dogs, but I'm not sure how often he did that. He had quite a life. He did well to make it to 20. Unfortunately cancer took him in the end, but I'm glad I got to spend so long with him.

I found this video while browsing wholesome videos with my room mate. About a year ago my beloved cat passed away. I loved her more than anything. Your tabbies look almost exactly like her. I just wanted to say they're beautiful, and seeing them was like seeing my Sweet pea again. Thank you.
It brings me so much joy to see you guys taking your furry family members in to account when building your house can't wait to see you guys fostering too y'all are good cat people ♥️😺
Me looking at the first drawing of the kitchen: oh man, sweet architect mockups! Jun: By the way, this is the one I drew, which looks really weird and is like, crappy... Coulda fooled me! I'm assuming that's his handwriting on the drawing as well, it looks so nice!
All of the cat friendly features are amazing. I didnt even know that there are so many choices for pet centred designs. Also, I love how big the windows are in your plans. One of the key things that I want in my future house is a lot of natural light. 10/10
People said that about our fake plants two years ago but we've barely had to touch them! I also don't think too much dust accumulates in the spots where cats walk around and lay down. I'm pretty sure most of what I'll need to clean will be their paw prints/fur and whatnot. Either way we'll be getting a ladder to take care of the light fixture in the fukinuke anyway, and I enjoy heights and the view will be great so I'll be happy to take on that duty!
@@RachelandJunAdventures Maybe add a human sized resting spot up there as well? For example, in one corner have a triangle shaped landing inserted in between pieces of cat shelving. (Hope I described that well enough) It'll help make it easier to clean and you'll be able to enjoy the view a bit more with a sturdier piece to lean against.
@@RachelandJunAdventures there are also dusters you can very that are on veeeeeery long poles with bendable duster tops. So you can kink it at a 90 degree angle and dust above you head. Just don't look up or you'll get dust in your eyes!
whenever jun or rachel says "pichi" i feel like they're saying my name and it freaks me out a bit 😂😂 haku and poki cuddling next to each other though 🥺🥺🥺
i think it would be so cute if you had your cat's paw prints incorporated into your house, like dipping their feet into wet cement?? or some other kind of mold (if that's safe for them to do so!)
Not a furniture suggestion, but I'd definitely invest one of those dusters (like that one swiffer) that have long extendable handles and can bend at 90 degree angles and such, so you can more easily clean the high-up cat shelves!!
Love the floorplan, so much light, so airy, fantastic. It's great that you're thinking about the possibility of cats slipping; it does happen. I know a couple of very sad stories about cats falling, so I hope people follow your example.
Try to have access to all the places your cats can go. Because some cats when they are sick tend to hide. It’s a rare moment, but you don’t want to have to worry about it especially when they get older. Your design ideas look so beautiful by the way.
the fact that these things are so readily available in Japan is amazing! i dont think there is a single one like that in the US if there is I will be shocked. there's things you can buy to do it yourself here but never heard of a builder with those options. your house looks amazing i can't wait to see it one day!
I’m allergic to cats. But I will ALWAYS watch Rachel and Jun cat content. I am LIVINGGGG for this house design and all the things they are doing to accommodate their fur babies.
i didn't come into this channel expecting cat things, but now that's the reason why I'll never leave. (Thank you Rachel and Jun I love your content! Both cat and non-cat related!)
It's silly but if you happen to get floating shelves, and you position your lamp under it while they are on top it will light them up and make them look like they have a evil plan. 😂 Best decision I ever made

YESSS. I gave my cat steps up to the top of my wardrobe. But does she use the sturdy boxes? Nooo. She's got to yeet herself off the side and land with a giant THUD. I swear I wince more than she does.
The ultimate question is...
_What will Jun's kitchen look like?_
Rachel and Jun: Build a cat friendly house in real life
Me: adopts a cat in the Sims 4 because my apartment doesn't allow cats T.T
Sometimes apartment landlords can be convinced to break the rules, if you're willing to pay a hefty pet deposit and can make a good argument for it.
Same. As much as I love to have a male tuxedo cat but I can't.
And Jun making sushi for them hahaha
omg why do they dislike cats? is it a sanitary thing or like a superstition?
It's hard out there for a goyangi.
I've never heard of this before, and it's so weird. Is there a historical reason as to why this is?
That's a new place to not go to
Well, it might be due to the fact that cats and dogs are viewed as a delicacy in some parts of the country.
I think with time, South Korea will continue to develop positive treatment of cats as older generations either evolve or die out.

ikr?? these cats have a better quality of life than like 75% of college students

I truly believe that Jun really wants the cat door knob. He said no just because Rachel didn't want it. Lol

One of the local cat cafes here, they have cat shelves and use fake greenery on a trellis as a safety wall. They even change the 'vines' seasonally.
Their engineers/designers drew a cat in the drawing. I can't evennnnnn! That's so cuteeeee!

Japan really goes all out for cats (and dogs) wish there was stuff like this where I live
From my over 30 years of living with cats I think the thing they love most is a simple box.
Love that the architect drew a cat as a way of showing that it is, indeed, a cat shelf. 😂
We also had a cat wheel for awhile, but only a few of the cats ever used it that I saw.
mechanical blinds for the top windows so you can rise and lower them easily but also so they are out the way of kitty claws :)
Oh, man. I want a t-shirt or mug or tote bag with those cat drawings from the catalogue at 6:30 onwards... including the text and technical specifications. They are SO COOL!!

In the past they had a large cage that they would roll onto their patio - I'm sure they're considering something like that!
My cat is 12 years old. Somehow he still is able to trot pretty fast and jump up on the porch. He goes crazy when my dad brings home a goose or duck, because he knows he will get the head.

Still? Cats can get up to twenty xD
My old boy is going to be 14 soon and he still runs, jumps and hunts

Build a 'cat elevator' too, where they can be trained to push a button with their paws to activate the lift : D
Yeah but it’ll be better if it doesn’t have doors.
a little too pricy
I think that'll be cute
sounds pricy and could be dangerous, doors shutting on their tail, it getting stuck, etc. Especially if it's closed off like an actual elevator where u can't check if everything is okay.

@@thegearknob7161 That was probably his last spare life he lost right there
@@chiara9767 Pfft.

All of the cat friendly features are amazing. I didnt even know that there are so many choices for pet centred designs.
Also, I love how big the windows are in your plans. One of the key things that I want in my future house is a lot of natural light. 10/10
human practical concern: cleaning dust on high shelves
Shelves? What about those windows? 😕
that's what the cats are for ^^
People said that about our fake plants two years ago but we've barely had to touch them!
(Hope I described that well enough)
It'll help make it easier to clean and you'll be able to enjoy the view a bit more with a sturdier piece to lean against.
@@RachelandJunAdventures there are also dusters you can very that are on veeeeeery long poles with bendable duster tops. So you can kink it at a 90 degree angle and dust above you head. Just don't look up or you'll get dust in your eyes!

its really true that limitations foster creativity!
limited space= best ideas (boats, tiny homes)
Try to have access to all the places your cats can go. Because some cats when they are sick tend to hide. It’s a rare moment, but you don’t want to have to worry about it especially when they get older. Your design ideas look so beautiful by the way.

My one concern about the cat-only areas is how you're going to clean them if the cats have an accident in them. Just a consideration!
Time to grab the ladder xD
There are dusters that you can extend. You can make the pole very long and you can change the angle of the actual duster
i didn't come into this channel expecting cat things, but now that's the reason why I'll never leave. (Thank you Rachel and Jun I love your content! Both cat and non-cat related!)
It's silly but if you happen to get floating shelves, and you position your lamp under it while they are on top it will light them up and make them look like they have a evil plan. 😂 Best decision I ever made
