As a produce person for 6 years here are some tips. Yellow bellies, shriveled stems, bee marks( skid marks/scarring on the skin) and tiny black holes (rarely occur) but the surrounding flesh is firm. Yellow bellies are a sign that they have enough water/weight. Shriveled stems means it wasn't picked too early and is fully ripe. Bee marks are a sign of sweetness because just like flowers they can smell the sweetness. The tiny black holes I only see a couple of times per year but are the absolute best melons when you see them.

He often tests food/drink gadgets (or gadgicks as he calls them). Of course, you can't test a lemon gadget with only 1 lemon, you have to use at least 5 to be sure it works well......
They only have piles of junk food, you would be diabetic in a week.

... my grandma always said "look for the bee stings and a yellow belly" the yellow belly for "rested" or ripened and the more bee stings it has the sweeter the melon ... I've used her technique for most of my adult years at 52, with great results ...👍😉

I was a produce manager at a grocery store for 10 years. Best way to find a ripe watermelon is in order of importance. 1. Dry Stem (Most important) green stem means green watermelon. 2. Push on it and you want a little give if it's hard as a rock it's not ripe and if it gives to much it's over ripe and mushy 3. Thump and you want a nice hollow drum type of sound.

Employee of the local dollar store here. I basically take care of our produce section and cooler/frozen section. Just like a week ago, I had a rotten watermelon explode and leave a massive puddle of very pungent water all over the floor. Wasn't quite as bad as I thought, though the smell was horrid.
I had a watermelon sitting on my table in my kitchen and in the middle of the night it exploded. We thought a pipe burst or something. Walked in to the kitchen and the smell was disgusting! We had watermelon yuck all over everything! Such a sticky gooey mess!

My great grandpa raised watermelon for years and the sound test is how we've always done it.
Choosing excellent watermelons is a skill that takes years to master. You can't just learn it overnight, silly. As my grandfather used to say... Be one with the watermelon!

I farmed watermelons for a long time,
After it has been picked and moved around it becomes difficult as the sounds changes, so selection when harvesting is the key.
The stem breakes easier close to the melon when it is ready so a long stem is not a great sign, but not always.
