Wow....I was looking into the steps on becoming an amateur naturalist and came across this video. Im grateful and honored to spend 3:09 minutes with Henry. It would appear that even in his passing, he is teaching others to admire and love all aspects of nature. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity of viewing this video.

He's not kidding about finding a certain species, I highly suggest finding a genus of plant and a genus of animal in your area and intentionally becoming obsessed with it. I realized that genus Quercus (oaks) sustain an immense amount of life and the Blue Jays are extremely important in spreading acorns, that's a good place to start.
Use the county maps (in the top left) on the site BONAP to find what species are in your county.
And to start to put together the tree of life, and know how different animals or plants are related I suggest Aron Ra's 50 part series 'Systematic Classification of Life'

I got interested in being a naturalist because of the doc in the movie master and commander I think the whole thing of getting on the floor and smelling the plants is a bit far for me especially nowadays people don’t respect your space and record you

Do you need the outfit he is wearing. Very common among tree huggers of his age. Regardless it's an under rated hobby
