  • ■ SA PA, VIETNAM: After the chicken BBQ on my first night in Mama Zee's Hmong Village Homestay, I woke up with a pounding headache. Soaking in the neighbour's ice-cold tub, I tried and tested remedy, proved futile. So it was time to get this show on the road.
The plan for the day was to drive to a roadside market known for selling the best juiciest pigs, perfect for a family BBQ! But this is in the countryside so chores are plentiful and have to be fulfilled in order.
First on the agenda, feed the insatiable water buffalos...

I'm always amazed at how good the English is of people who live in the country of a non English speaking nation. Even though I know it's usually because the world watches US(and Brit)shows and movies and listens to our music a lot(and have for decades). But it still amazes me. It puts a big smile on my face when I see someone who most would never guess would speak English speak it so well as Zee does. Yea it kind of sucks because many who just watch our shows think Americans are like what they see on tv and movies and not what the average one is like but it's whatever. I still love to see it. Plus it makes for easier traveling for us English speakers.

I'm not gonna say that their life isn't hard and they could not do with more things etc... but this discussion reminds of a woman I met in Australia. She was in her 40s when she told me this story 20 years ago. So she was likely talking about 1970s Western Australia. She said when she was young, she grew up in a shack with a huge family and she said they basically had no possessions. One day some white folks (yes she used this term) from the government came to their place and told them that they were poor. She said everyone was shocked and responded no. She said she never thought of herself like that nor did the rest of her family. She said she didn't even think they were missing anything as they always had food and sleept under a tin roof. Just an anecdote I thought some of you may find interesting.

@@leebaxtertrading didn't said they weren't happy. They deserve happiness and poverty gets in the way many times. I was fortunate to have had a very happy childhood and I'm thankfull. Even Harald felt the need to buy a football (latest video) that's how little these kids have.

@@HaraldBaldr nice story, I also met an aborigine woman in her sixties, 10 years ago when I did my 1 year work&holiday adventure in Australia; she also was from WA, 1 hour from Perth, in the middle of nowhere.
Now she lives alone in a huge house the government "gave" her. I stayed with her for a couple of months while working in a farm nearby. She always said she didn't need all that stuff, all that space, just company.
Such a lovely lady, will never forget her.

Thank for for this amazing video series. I used to live near large Hmong communities in Minnesota. It's a real tragedy. Lots of the boys are in gangs and into crime. Whoever thought to bring people from tropical mountains to the extremely cold, and flat US state of Minnesota did them so much harm.

it is cold in winter in the mountains of Northern Vietnam.
blame the crime rather on HollyWeird and the stupid youth culture.
of course kids of seasoned civl war fighters will not soften up once they see how inner city gangs are already parading around there. unfortunately.
I guess their CIA handlers didnt help them integrate, too.
Lutheran churches though did a lot.

    Hey Harald the Northman,
I just had to reach out and thank you for the incredible videos you've been making. Your adventures are absolutely legendary. Watching you navigate through all those unique experiences, from bringing home the bacon to standing your ground against those water buffalo, is nothing short of epic. And those rice field escapades - pure gold!
Your sense of humor had me in stitches. I laughed my guts out and truly enjoyed every minute of your videos. The way you capture the essence of your journeys and share them with such charisma is truly a gift.
I’m particularly grateful for the video featuring Mama Zee and her homestay. It was heartwarming to see such a happy, welcoming family and a beautiful home. Your storytelling brought their world to life for all of us who can't visit in person, and for that, I'm deeply thankful.
Keep up the fantastic work, Harald. Your videos are not just entertaining; they bring joy and laughter to so many people around the world. I can't wait to see what epic adventure you take us on next.
Big thanks and much appreciation from Lemo in Denmark!
    Stay awesome,

    Harald,
When I was a kid living in Dalat, the only memory I remembered of the Hmong people was from my grandmother. She would buy switches from them to beat us up with. Now, looking back, that was one way for them to earn a living. Glad you have broadened my horizons and to un-colored my childhood memory with your beautiful videos of the Hmong people.
