You found the most important step when using D-2. . . lots and lots and lots of water. I have three 15 gallon containers that I haul water in when I am cleaning grave stones where there is no water source. You are not only improving the appearance of the markers, but also extending the "life span" of the stones. Keep up the good work.

I'm glad you are working so hard to clean the Byrd stones. That lichen is a primary organism that decomposes rock and gravestones for nutrients. It's first on site after volcanic eruptions and begins to make soil right away. It sure is tough on tombstones. I'm so happy Elizabeth's side has cleaned so nicely. Her hiding the brothers during the war shows her courage. I'm sure Adam worked with her on that. Your gentleness with these stones mimics your work on the farmhouse. Thank you for sharing this.

I recently picked up a couple of garden sprayers which, hopefully, will make future application of Wet N' Forget far less straining on my hands and arms. Never used D2, but Wet N' Forget has done wonders on some of the stones which went from black to almost snow white and from near impossible to read to quite easy to read.

All the precious love you show these generations of the past will NOT go unnoticed! God in his infinite love and presence is watching you give of your heart and care to these people and their resting places. Their names will continue to be spoken and read, because of you. Someday soon, when I am laid to rest and eventually forgotten, I can only pray God sends me someone like you to care enough for the life that I lived, to clean off the years of lost time from the stone and show that I really DID live. I really DID love, I really mattered to some. God Bless you.

Robert I own a pressure washing company and very familiar with D2. I highly recommend you do not use those brushes on the head stones. Those head stones are very old and have over 100 years of mold build up on them. Recommend D2 (sprayed on method only) use only. You will need to apply D2 multiple times to fully get rid of the amount of mold on those stones. Let mother nature take it"s course after each application. The rain will wash away all the dead mold. Also, after you apply a good coat of D2 and you see the mold turn brown that is how you know it is working. Remember, these head stones are old and most likely brittle and very easy to damage when brushed.

So I assume then that pressure washing them would be bad? That would take that mold and lichen off in a heartbeat.

@@libertyvilleguy2903 Never use pressure on a headstone. You will damage them. D2 is the only cleaner that should be used on headstones.

Im so intrigued by you and how you guys went to the gravesides to clean the stones back to their original state. I think it's so great that you did this. It touched my heart that you guys were doing something like this. It's so interesting and intriguing. Thanks for a sharing.❤

I've never been to Hall Co..Ga. or Alabama. But, my ancestors are from there. If you get to Hall Co. Ga. the family names are, Harrington, Black
    and Florence.
I love the respect and care you show to all. Thank you.

That's so awesome taking the time to care for the Byrd family plot. It's something to pass on to the next generation. They will rest easy knowing someone cared enough to care for them even after they were gone. You should be Proud. They look Beautiful!

YAY!!! This makes me soooo happy! You come across stones that no one will visit for a very long time. Spraying and leaving them will help them so much over time.

D2 is awesome stuff. I used it to clean my grandparents head stone and foot stone. Spent $60 on material after a monument company said it needs to be re-engraved. Head stone loos like new and they passed away in the 70's and 80's.
You can also spray a light coating on and let it sit for a few weeks. Every month it will get clearer and clearer

Thanks for the info about the D2. My hubbie and I have several family graves that we have wanted to do this. I our family research we’ve found four generations graves and it’s really nice to know what to use to clean them good.

Thank you for doing this! I cannot wait to see your update on these!! Absolutely AMAZING!!
We need so many more of us to actually care about these things!! I think people would be appalled at the number of headstones that are actually completely covered up. I started out as a teen by just doing a little extra when I went to care for all my passed family members. Id manicure the stones then clean them. I'd always make it a point to clean a few extra. Always looking for the ones that were in the worst condition that no one was caring for. Which was when I discovered all the flat stones that are COMPLETELY COVERED!! It still brings tears to my eyes every single time! My next big project is going to be the soldiers cemetery in my area, hopefully next year! But there's SO MANY, I fear I'm going to need a ton of help!! I'm sure I can get it though!! I can't believe that NO ONE cares for their stones. That is possibly the biggest kick in the butts to them after all they've done for us. COMPLETE DISRESPECT IMO!! But I'm going to change that SOON!!
Thanks again for having such an AMAZING HEART!!
Just incase you hadn't thought of it yet, I use weed sprayers for most of my stuff. But I love the large ones for my water too!! ESPECIALLY the battery powered ones!!
These are my smaller ones: a.co/d/hHPHKGw
But I really love these because of the capacity and battery operation too!! a.co/d/dxFqYF7
