I have taken classes on various start/stop systems and can honestly and biasly say, chrysler is the ones who got it right. It is so much easier to diagnose and fix than most of the other brands. It helps that fca wrote the description, theory, and error code definitions the right way so it is easy to understand and execute. You have a textbook perfect diag and repair for this one Eric! Thanks for the awsome video as always!
The fact that they lasted that long is miracle. We change battery’s on Chrysler and jeeps everyday, it’s was really bad at one point that we were using so many that they got back order 😂
They make a aftermarket harness for this van to disconnect the auto start. If just makes sure the dash button stays in the off position and doesn't cycle back on after you turn the vehicle off. It still functions by the factory button if you wish just locks it in the on or off position
Say what you want about Chrysler, I'm not particularly a fan myself, but I've found that their service information is some of the best in the business.
Just dealt with a similar issue on a 2018 Jeep Compass with the big 2.4l, in my case the power control relay was intermittently sticking open, causing the car to go into a limp mode and saying service stop/start system. I too was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information in the theory of operation regarding the stop/start system.

A coworker of mine has a Durango, and he told me about the second battery that runs the Start/Stop program. His battery is dying for the program, and he is not going to replace it, so it essentially disables the program from ever running again. Such a stupid idea and program to have. I know Ford now gives you the option at the factory if you order a new vehicle to disable that feature.
Eric, first off, your videos are awesome, second, about 4 months ago, whenever I put my grandkids in the car (twin boys almost 3 years old) I would say "contact" when starting the car...now they say "contact" without me initiating...it's adorable and thank you.
Like your wedding ring. Be careful when working around power with a ring on, my dad nearly lost his finger when the he shorted power to ground through through his ring. Pretty messy and the ring melted. Be safe. Love the videos.
Tungsten rings are conductive, but much less so than most other rings. You might not run into issues at 12v but if you mess with higher voltage stuff (hybrids, AC power, .etc) you really should take the ring off or wear gloves.
I took the online start stop diagnostics class w/John Thornton. He recommended replacing both batteries at the same time regardless of test results. It's important to have batteries with the same health because they are charged by the alternator together. GM uses/used the same type of 2 battery system, although the aux battery is usually in the trunk.

I also own a 2018 Pacifica. Those are definitely the original factory installed batteries. You can tell because they have gray Mopar labels. Replacement Mopar batteries have a white label. Six years out of the factory batteries in these vans is very impressive. They usually fail within three years or less. Some owners have had both batteries replaced twice while still under warranty. No reset is needed on these vans when replacing the batteries, but I advise folks to leave both batteries disconnected at the same time for a couple minutes so the orange @ light goes away immediately. It will eventually go away on it's own after a few drive cycles if you don't. I know you would never advise anyone to do so, but if someone has a dead aux battery, wants to save a few bucks, doesn't like/use stop/start, and can live with the orange @ light, you can safely leave the aux battery's negative cable disconnected. Stop/start is permanently disabled, but everything else still works as intended (including remote start). Our van has been this way for almost 4 years. 🙂 You can electrically separate these batteries by removing one of the negative cables. I've found it easiest to remove the aux negative cable. I was happy that you acknowledged the need to separate the batteries and test them separately. Many folks don't which deems the test worthless. Eric, I do have one question. I have AllData and was wondering if the explanations from the manufacturer's service info is identical to what you find in AllData or is the manufacturer's service info usually more detailed?
As the owner of a 2019 Pacifica on its third set of batteries, I’m glad you installed batteries that exceed the service data spec. The 2nd set died in 14 months since it was underpowered. Every single warning light went off. After seeing the BCM codes related to voltage in your video, it makes a lot more sense. I know it’s annoying but I would rather this setup than the VW battery programming.
Yes sir, twenty nine computers plus all the wires and connectors. Throw in operating conditions, yep, it’s a miracle that the vehicle even runs. Great video as ever, I enjoy the interaction between you and Mrs. O. You’re a lucky guy!
I've got a2007 Ford E250 van with 390 thousand miles on it and even the spark plugs are original nothing on it has been replaced but the brakes and oil and tires. That's it. Now that's amazing. Thanks for the video
I'm glad you mentioned that some vehicles need some reprogramming after a battery change, not just a relearn toot around the block, or cycling hvac controls to recalibrate them. I recall the 1st time I put a b+ in a 16 Escape with the big 1.6 that came in on the hook. After said replacement, the transmission didn't want to shift, then it hunted around for gears like it was severely slipping. Rather than call the customer straight away, I decided to look in service info and sure enough, the ol ghost of Henry said that the transmission controller goes into a default strategy, so either use a scan tool to recalibrate it or just drive it until it straightens out..Subbies need an idle relearn procedure if the battery goes stoned flat or is disconnected for more than 1/2hr. So yes, Eric, I do watch even your 'How to change a battery' vids :) It's all good info.
HOLY crap, blast from the past. That is the No-Ox tubes we used in the telecommunications installations 🙂. If it's good enough for million dollar telephone power systems it's good enough for car batteries!
I remember shopping for a new truck several years ago. Salesman says "This vehicle has start/stop technology to save gas!" I say "I don't want that, show me something else." So then he shows me a model with a 4-cyl engine and a turbocharger. "Turbo power and great mileage!" My response was identical. I just want something with lots of normally-aspirated cylinders. Yes, I'm old and cranky about new-fangled crap. Even daytime running lights irritate me.
It might be a simple battery change, but you did it in a way where you justified it prior without too little or too much diagnosis work and without lasting damage to the vehicle. I think that's one more happy customer.
Back when I was a kid the bright switch was on the floor and I had to replace it every other year because salty shoes in the winter caused them to rust out fast.

It is not winter driven but it has been parked outside (we're in Ontario so it can hit -31 Celcius) 95% of its life with the battery never removed. The first battery lasted until 2021 with only 1 boost 1 spring to start it. It started all the other springs without any help. My 2011 Ram - original battery also until later in 2021. They last well.

Eric is the current version of "Car Talk" (Old Boston car guys radio show)
Most of us would watch you change a battery twice a week! You're just that good!
That battery is manufactured at East Penn Manufacturing in Pennsylvania, and would normally be labelled Deka if it wasn't branded for Napa, you got the best battery on the market.
THIS IS CORRECT. JUST DID THE RESEARCH AND PUT A NEW LEGEND BATTERY IN MY RAM TRUCK.
Mr. O this isn't "a video about changing a battery". This is a full job you did a lot just to switch a battery out!
“ It’s THAT guy” and Mowerman…wouldn’t be complete without either! 🇨🇦
I smiled when you talked about the battery terminal cleaner. When you first used it, I was thinking that design was decades old and still does a better job than anything else. Once, there were great designers. I later wasted my money back then on a SnapOn with blades and quickly realized more money didn't always mean better tools.
Same 😂
that's what i say when you think there is nothing else to learn its time to retire . That is why i keep watching your channel at 72 .
I am 72 as well so ditto to that
Aside from loving watching you work,;-)…I was so happy to see you clean and LUBE the actually battery terminals, contact side!
I want to jump thought the screen sometimes watching guys do dry fits and then spray lube ON the outside of the terminals and contacts.
Beauty man.. again, Love your ethic and problem solving. A cut above.
Хотя по правилам, наносить смазку можно только ПОСЛЕ соединения клемм.
I learned new things watching this one. May never need what I learned but you never know.
Finally someone who explains the stop start simply
I don’t watch your video out of desperation, I watch your videos for their entertainment value. I like your down to earth, no nonsense comments.
The fact that they lasted that long is miracle. We change battery’s on Chrysler and jeeps everyday, it’s was really bad at one point that we were using so many that they got back order 😂
Do all Manufacturers : Ford , Chevy , Toyota - have start / stop function that CAN'T be disabled ?
They make a aftermarket harness for this van to disconnect the auto start. If just makes sure the dash button stays in the off position and doesn't cycle back on after you turn the vehicle off. It still functions by the factory button if you wish just locks it in the on or off position
It's all about knowledge.. learning is what makes it worth watching..
I'm used.
To watching your videos at a year 4 years old, 3 years old. This is only a day old this is new. You still look the same man. It looks like you haven't aged a bit ever since I've started watching you like 5 years ago.
When I started watching clip. I new it was a battery problem. What I did not know is it having 2 batteries. Well done.
Carbide rings aren’t conductive. I had one for this reason.
Gotta love when the wife say she’s coming back to do it again!
Eric, "it's a wonder I even have any kids." Too much! Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂
Learned something new about cars with Start/Stop systems.
Even your more mundane videos are quality enough to pay attention. Thanks for posting on a regular basis.
Glad you like them!
@@SouthMainAutoI never see any gen1 Tacoma on your channel! Do you Not service them? I have an old Tacoma with 354k that can use a high mileage look over maintenance to keep er tippyTop
Glad I watch you. We have a 2020 Pacifica, I didn’t’t realize there are two batteries. Thank you.
Glad I watched your video! I changed the aux battery and then the same park issue popped up. If I hadn’t watched the video I probably would’ve had to take it in so Thank you!! Problem fixed and I didn’t have to give it to the dealership for them to finally get to it in a week.
Mr Eric sir. What no CONTACT. Ouch. Still a very interesting video. A teacher learning something every day. That is what makes you who you are Eric. A true professional. ❤❤😂👍.
If I can do it, you can do it,...well, I have actually successfully changed a battery before but I ain't sure I can navigate 27 computers and an extra powerful scanner to press a clear button!!! Eric O, you are the man!!
I’m sorry Mr. O. I watched all your videos and everytime I forget to hit the like button… 😅
This is the best battery change I've ever seen.
Mower man is stocking up on mowers of different types for the apocalypse 😂
🤣Imagine the size of the solar panel array Mower man is gonna need to recharge his mower multiple times a day! ☀
And he only mows during the taping of you tube videos. LOL
He apparently mows his lawn 4 days a week.
@@anonimity5548 Probably have to cover his lawn.
Four riding mowers are required for the Apocalypse.
I always learn something from watching Eric's videos. Who would have ever thought there are two batteries in a car!
24:50 - "Wow - I'm surprised you even have kids." And that's why it's entertaining to watch Eric do a simple battery replacement.
You are one the best honest mechanic I had come across Avoca NY. wish we could find clones of you in all the states but unfortunately, you have to look real hard to find an honest mechanic, Mr Eric O.
Pro Tip: Disconnect Aux battery to disable start stop function. After all, its a Dodge so you are use to having warning lights on anyway.
I wonder how many people go into the parts store and ask for never sneeze? I like your humor.
Wonder if she saved enough gas on that start stop system to pay for that extra battery? What idiots! Cheers and thanks for another smile!
As usual, learned a bunch of new stuff...in hindsight, of course you'd want 2 batteries for these start/stop systems, thanks for taking the time to explain it to us.
“Parking brakes had cables” I’m so old I remember when gas pedals had cables.
I remember when chokes were cable operated
and cars came equipped with cranking handles
My first 7 cars had rod operated throttles. First cable was a Datsun pickup 1.3 litre.
@@twig3288 I found the cable chokes so much better that I converted dozens of automatic chokes to cable.
@@wssides I had one of those 1.3 L Datsun powerhouses too. 😂 No power anything on that little guy. Including the engine. Even had rubber floor mats. About as basic as you can get. I bought it when it was a year old and kept it for 12 years and sold it for what I paid for it.
Thank you, I have learned from watching you .
Oh, the struggles. Nice to see someone else have issues. I am not alone. Parking brakes were seldom used because the cable would rust and lock on.
As a Chrysler tech my experience tells me the batteries s are always the cause of that light the caps are always blown off and after 2022 aftermarket batteries cause check engine lights for over amperage
Nice, why Chrysler?
Chrysler, gm, ford, international, peterbilt I'm a master tech major rental car company
Thank you so much, not only did your video help, but also the comments left all helped me solve my issue. Now my dashboard light has gone. 😅thank you again.
Photo bombed at the end by Mrs O....priceless
Another great vid. So great to know there is still real Americans left on this platform. Youre truely above the rest. Hat off.. Assertive nod..
First person in the history of the world worried about the start/stop system not functioning… long as it passes the PRNY inspection I’d not worry
Eric always makes me smile with every sarcastic torque trolling comment...
I work at a Chrysler dealership relatively local to you (not bath, not painted post). This is a classic issue on all these stop start garbage. Needs a BBAUX101AB
As a Chrysler technician do you have to replace the small Aux battery? Can you just remove it? I don’t use start/stop function. I always turn it off.
@@russsuchowesky4234 I have been asked that multiple times. I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure. The second battery is there to reduce voltage drop during cranking.
Thanks for the reply.
That battery blankie keeps it warm and snuggled all night. Another great video Eric
You can electrically separate these batteries by removing one of the negative cables.
Wouldn't be a SMA video without lawn mower guy in the background :)
Yes sir, twenty nine computers plus all the wires and connectors. Throw in operating conditions, yep, it’s a miracle that the vehicle even runs. Great video as ever, I enjoy the interaction between you and Mrs. O. You’re a lucky guy!
so the aux batt is pretty much just an AGM version of a lawn mower battery it looks like fun
Love ya work mate
HOLY crap, blast from the past. That is the No-Ox tubes we used in the telecommunications installations 🙂. If it's good enough for million dollar telephone power systems it's good enough for car batteries!
Sounds like the daily mower is at it!
Your explanation of these problems and systems keep me coming back.
The start stop system aka starter killer lol. I like my 2024 parking brake cable and pedal.
Start-stop system is disabled? Sounds like an upgrade to me.
It might be a simple battery change, but you did it in a way where you justified it prior without too little or too much diagnosis work and without lasting damage to the vehicle. I think that's one more happy customer.
Back in the 70s, lots of cars died at traffic lights and we only had one battery!
Back when I was a kid the bright switch was on the floor and I had to replace it every other year because salty shoes in the winter caused them to rust out fast.
Oh man you're talking about cars with TWO keys!?
And Chrysler keys are upside-down. Just ask Derek.
Who the heck fixes a stop start system? The first thing I did with my Buick was buy the module to disable it. One of the worst ideas ever implemented to meet emissions standards.
My thoughts exactly! 😂 Silly video
A customer actually brought a vehicle in with almost a full tank...... Praise the lord 😁 great video Mr o. Thank you for brightening up my day with memories of my dad. You actually look a little like him too

@@davidbaldwin2729 👍👍👍
I don't know who makes the Chrysler batteries but they are the best. I have a 2006 Dodge Charger which we bought brand new in 2007.
That guy mows his lawn twice a day!
