- FRANKFURT, GERMANY - Explosives experts in Frankfurt on Sunday defused a massive bomb - a remnant of the last World War more than 70 years ago.
CNN reports that the 1.4 ton HC 4000 bomb was found buried at a construction site close to Goethe University's Frankfurt campus on Tuesday.
The discovery prompted authorities to cordon off a 1.5-kilometer radius danger zone around the explosive. Over 60,000 people were evacuated from the area, which was home to hospitals, retirement homes, and the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank.
Dubbed 'Blockbuster', the British World War II-era bomb could reportedly generate an explosion capable of flattening an entire block.
Of the estimated 1.5 million tons of munitions dropped on Germany by Allied forces, some 15% failed to explode and ended up getting buried, according to the New York Times. Experts say over 2,000 tons of unexploded weaponry are found in the country each year.
Despite having a dedicated bomb-disposal unit, Germany's unexploded bombs remain a problem. The aging munitions could become more brittle and unstable, and are reportedly being spotted in harder-to-reach areas, reports the BBC.

pretty much. But soldiers and people around them would often catch a ride on them. Still if you're going to ride on the outside of any moving vehicle ride on the back. That if you do fall off then you won't get run over.
soldiers did that with the M4s, but on the side of the hull and turrets. cant do the front, that block the view of the crew, and the back is where a hot engine is at.

In Graz Austria they found one by the main train station a few years back. Not really knowing how to defuse it they decided to evacuate the area and detonate it. Of course the bomb was quite a bit bigger than they expected and a LOT of windows where shattered in half of the city. Something similar happened in Munich some years back, there is amazing footage on youtube.

Yea ikr, but sometimes the drivers quarters are connected to the bay of the turret, which is dumb because if there was a wall there that means increased chance of surviving due to the fact that the blast from shells exploding if It was ammo racked wouldn't hit him and the only thing he would experience (Driver) is concussion

It was a 4,000 lb bomb the called the 'cookie' and it was designed to drop along with 2,000 or so thermite bombs, and explode on the surface, blasting buildings open but leaving them standing. then the firebombs could have more fuel to ignite and in a full raid, the fires would do the rest of the work. 300 bombers could come and go and in 30 minutes they were done and the firestorm was already 1,500 degrees

Defusing unexploded WW2 bombs in Germany is actually a Race against time as the bombs tend to get more and more unstable as decay continues up to a point where the only option left is to purposefully detonate them in a "controlled" environment - which means on the spot it was found while protecting nearby houses as good as possible. If there's something good about this it's probably the fact that Germany has some of the best Bomb Squads and Mine Detection Units in the world
