- The 1970s saw the emergence of a stupendous quantity of brilliant Reggae Icons. From that esteemed generation came Trenchtown boy Ijahman Levi. A childhood friend of the Wailers and alumnus of the Joe Higgs unofficial School of music.
He was headed for early success but had his trajectory deviated by a move to England and prison sentence that changed his life forever.

I've been to a view shows of him in Holland. But the very first show is still very special to me. I was in front off the stage and his song: Bob and friends started and it gave me a rush! He stoped the band from playing and pulling me on stage. Yeah mon, their i stand and i started to dancing with the legandary Ijahman Levi! BLESS HIM! 🖤💚💛❤🙏

your best life 😁
Ijahman holds a very special place where I come from. Sounds of earth and ocean and friendship and discovery and struggle. Always special in my heart
Carrying jah heavy load like the legend he is. Saw him twice. It's a spiritual experience.
Amongst my favorite roots artistes & absolute unique sounding vocalist. Haile Ijahman Levi...
Haile I Hymn is one of my favourite albums, love Ijahmam
@@bailey9746 Great album
Loved it...Still do
Some of my favourite words ever are from 'I'm a Levi'
'It is better for a man to conquer himself, than a king to conquer and capture many cities '.
These words have been printed, framed and hang on my wall where I can see them every day. Having experienced mental health problems for many years and known several people who have overcome addictions to drink or drugs,I can totally relate to them.
yet another great slice of roots history. am a big fan of ijahman, big up yourself RAS (:

I discovered Ijahman in the early 80s listening to songs Carry Jah Heavy Load (Heavy Lord in some publications) and Are We A Warrior. (can't remember which I caught onto first) I was immediately drawn in..That sound was different from the Rick-a Tick, Rack-a-Tack sound associated with Deep Roots Reggae of the times and had a very Strong Classical and Symphonic edge to the music One radio broadcaster hosting a weekly program in my country labelled his sound as NEW AGE MUSIC. Quite appropriate I should think😊😊. I was amazed and incredulous.... Trevor Sutherland aka Ijahman is a Great singer/composer and a VERY UNDERATED lead guitarist ..
I bumped into Ijah man in Europe many years ago. He was a very small man and had two very tall bodyguards ( ?) With him. He asked me where he could buy some weed. I gave him directions and he was off. Love love his musics. Mystical hymns
@@michelrood2966 Interesting 😄

My favourite reggae artist
" I sing the albums " A amazing song with all the album title of Ijahman
Saw l jah man live many years ago a brilliant show jah heavy load one of my favorite tunes
Such a special musician 🙌🤌
That's true! He does sound a lot like Don Carlos. His style is very unusual
@@stuckintha90s Yep same vocal texture
Yes indeed. I recall reading Ijahman's bio years ago which cited the singer as " having influenced scores of later generation Reggae artists...."..And certainly Don Carlos was one of them and eventually singers like Micheal Rose ex- Black Uhuru, Junior Reid and others...And to a certain extent, the entire Waterhouse crew: From Black Uhuru to the late Lacksley Castell....
@@lawrencenjawe9875 Wow! This heavy. Thanks for sharing

😮
Favorite vocalist... Favorite sound.
I jah man Levi! Jesus selasie i keepth my sou!l The Councious Righteous man (Saying a little prayer to my heavenly father!) ❤
Unfortunately Ijahman Levi isn’t on any social media officially.
Can u (Reggae Appreciation Society) or whoever has his contacts let him know that we his die-hard fans need his catalogue for Jahmani label never to be out of print?! I want his CD’s💿so badly (from his Jahmani label)
Right in the first minute you talk 0:41 about "the evolution of Rocksteady to Ska down to Reggae music".
WHAT?!? 😲
It is Ska to Rocksteady to Reggae. EVERY noob interested in Reggae should know that! And to a 'society' for the appreciation of Reggae that is mandatory knowledge! How can I trust anything you say when even this elementary knowledge is failing?
PS. I saw Mr. Sutherland play life for the first time in the 80s, and for the last time in the 00s (stoned out of his mind, Dutch weed will do that to you). I wish he would tour more, his voice/music is magic.
@@skabuoy Must have been a slip of tongue 😅
His first few albums were excellent. Especially 'africa' from 84 and also 'inside out' from 89. Also check out his daughters lydia and shema who also sing and record. ❤❤
Oh Yes Africa was a Fantastic album
@@lawrencenjawe9875 was the first ijahman album I heard. And has the song 'to be loved by jah' which is probably my favourite track on the record. ❤
@@anthonywhelan8220 Yes ..That was a great number !!. I remember that one. I have it playing in my memory right now..Kudos to the bass player: That was either Val Douglas or the late great Robbie Shakespeare. I can't remember which one but I suspect the first........🤔
@@lawrencenjawe9875 good morning. It's caswell swaby according to sleeve notes. Great musicians all of them 👍 edit to say, robbie Shakespeare plays bass on one of the tracks. Master of my mind.
@@anthonywhelan8220 Oh. Yes. Swaby. From the prominent Chinese -Jamaican family. He was a also a producer, I believe..
Can you clarify something for me? I bought an album back in the 70’s on the Pama label. It was an Album titled ‘Straighten up’, can’t remember what volume in the series it was but it was a compilation of albums produced in direct reply to Trojan’s ‘Tighten Up’ compilations. One of those tracks was ‘Fire, Fire’ recorded by a young artist under the name ‘The Youth’. I have read on various blogs that it was this legend that recorded that track. Can you throw any light on that for me? Thanks.
Hi joan. Was it hot numbers vol 1 on pama??
Yes the same artist.
I saw this video 😅
Sound like maybe Ijahman had a similar experience to what LKJ chant about in Sonny's Letter.
