Wow. This has been my favourite aria since I started discovering Verdi at the age of 16. I did not expect Maestro Pavarotti seriously tackling "Di quella pira", but hearing this, how could I not? He was an outstanding tenor of our time, and again, I am glad his wonderful music is kept alive here.
Extraordinario. Extraordinario LUCIANO PAVAROTTI.
@muchogustavo1 yes, outstanding performance by filippeschi ! never heard that!!! my favourite stills luciano because the sound of his voice. he also sang nice high c's in the 70's when he was at his best like fille do regiment in 1972, che gelida manina 6 seconds high c in 1972. but i don't think he was the best hitting high c's, he was amazing as Nemorino, Ernani, his Calaf was not bad, and i think he was a nice Duca di Mantova too. thanks for your opinions. Bonisolli, Filippeschi, all genious!
Transposed down again, huh? I generally don't like Pav in the 80's and later that much, but I absolutely adore the sound of his voice in the 60's and 70's. In those days he was absolutely brilliant!
No tenor in history did this with a high D. It is either performed in high B (as here), or high C. Pavarotti's easy high C only lasted until pretty much 1980 or so, and there are a number of RUclips recordings from him in the 70's with the high C. The best (ruclips.net/video/pNYGv7zxhT4/видео.html&spfreload=10), is from GermanOperaSinger, who combined the only video of an early Luciano live opera performance of this aria, with its thrilling actual sound, by dubbing it perfectly from a different source, so that you can see him singing the aria and the final ringing high C .
I'm a tenor, and really good at hearing vocal troubles. No crack here...what you're hearing is just aspirated sixteenth notes with "passionate emphasis."
Pavarotti getting a bit out of his comfort zone, should have let that aria to spintos and dramatic tenors like Corelli or Del Monaco. He doesn't have the power.
Even the high Cs are interpolated. Verdi didn't write them. Gutsy to do this in a concert setting anyways...not easy even being a half step down. The tessitura of this piece is pretty killer, particularly with the declamatory phrasing. Bravo Luciano!
pathetic peformance..too fast, no feel, weak vibratos&legatos… bonisolli, corelli, bergonzi, björling, di stefano, del mario...even lauri volpi and gigli---they all show how di quella should have sung
Not Di Stefano and Volpi, they are not a spinto! Stefano little ruin his voice, Volpi seems good, but they are both not for dramatic! And that poor mosquito is dying here! A paper legend!!!
I am so thankful that Pavarotti was recorded so many times so we can still enjoy listening to him.
greatest lyric tenor
Joshua Han Yes but in the old age, like in This record he is a spinto or something like that
Joshua Han If you listen his voice in 1964 after in 1980 you gonna see, Much more heavy Voice and difficult in the high notes
Laura Opper But still the best

This must be the most video I have ever seen. I started with Benjamin Gigli in La Danza and I with a nitwit?
