- A broken roof, a broken deck, the homeowner nearly struck by a log that blew free of rigging. He was unlicensed as well says homeowner.
Whoever he is, he might have just had a bad day or a bad run of luck. I've had some rough times. . .

I was doing cabinet work at a new house and there were these pieces of tape on the new 16" square tile. I asked about it and the owner didn't like the contractor's price for putting the tile in, so they hired some random guys to do it. About a 3rd of the tile cracked from lack of floor prep, the guys had skipped town, so they ended up having to hire the contractor to redo the tile at more than the original bid. Ben's saying is so true.

We should all expect to pay for the service and quality we need. However, paying more doesn't guarantee quality or satisfaction. Customers also need to understand that a contractor can have substantial overhead costs that can sometimes equal or exceed the cost of the labor involved.
Personalities of customers come in a wide range I recently watched a video for a landscaper who was hired to clear and clean up some property when the customer observed that it only took the man and crew a couple hours to do the job, and he’d had machinery, his dissatisfaction grew to anger even though the landscaper did I a great job the customer felt he was taken advantage of due to the fact that he felt the job should have taken several hours to complete instead of a couple.
This a perfect example on "If you think hiring a professional is expensive then just wait and see how expensive it will be to hire an amateur."
i dont get why home owners get to be victim in these scenarios when its the greedy uneducated actions of naivety in wanting stuff done for cheap as it can, i work renovating homes for landlords and single home owners and some of the shit ive heard has nearly made me pack my job in at the suggestions people want to fix or improve something that wouldn't ever actually fix or improve it.
not saying its the case here but the first 2 attempts sort of looks like they just took billy the brother of tom who knows aunt Margaret and he cut down a bush once for them in 2013 so calls himself the tree surgeon of the town.

I'd love to get some idea of what % of companies are "hunicke-grade" versus total-tree-care-Co's #........I can't tell if his general level of professionalism (>2 heavy-equipment machinery, >3 long-term skilled crew-members etc etc, not necessarily "as good" as Hunicke but in that 'level' not just a guy with a chipper and a groundie he's had for 6mo), I'd guess ISA would be the main body to analyze such things but doubt it's been done (the lack of overall data for this industry just blows my mind, it really is a "wild west" in many ways at least in terms of today's working-world!!)

Like if you need someone to cut down a tree in your yard then check around and check the pricing.
You don't have to pick the most expensive, picking the middle tier is generally the best bet.

Never be afraid to tell a client that you don't have the proper equipment to do a job. Mistakes happen, but some are more easily avoided than others.
Much easier to explain that you dont have the correct equipment for the scope of work they want than to explain why you caused thousands of dollars of damage and walked off their job.

I’m 19, and When I worked with my dad in Remodeling and painting, clients would always tell us it’s hard to find good workers, and my dad is usually booked for a while with these same clients throughout the year, just go to show honest good work in this field really Pays itself off, people will pay for good work!

OK one more then I'm out, I have written 3 jobs where the HO complained that the price was too high, 2 of the three managed to drop trees on their houses, the 3rd had another company come out who promptly dragged down utility wires....across Murchison rd(not good) One of these days people will begin to understand that SOME THING YOU DON"T SKIMP ON! Tree Removal is HIGH ON THE LIST! You and your boys are phenomenal............GOOD LOOKING OUT

#2 Insist on insurance
#3 Insist that the company have proper equipment, just a few guys and a truck are not enough for Big Oaks!
And as always, never pay up front, cause real crooks will take 50% down and never show up.
A real tree company will be able to give a written estimate that really doesn't change well unless you ask for more work to be done. Like you agree to leaving the stump, then the home owner changes mind and wants removed, thus pony up the extra 300 bucks cause that is not free!

I had 2 huge limbs cut off tree in backyard that sits right on property line. My neighbors house sits right next to mine. One limb over my house and one over his. I picked company that was $400 to $500 more than other 3 companies. When done you couldn't tell they were there. They had 5 pieces of equipment and 6 guys showed up. Professional from top to bottom. Crew leader took off 3 or 4 smaller branches to make tree look clean and groomed. One of the other companies that had bid did tree down the street from me and cracked a huge portion of sidewalk and driveway apron. I'll pay the extra. The owner called me following morning asking if he needed to send a cleaner over because it starting raining hard after they were done and his guy told him he wasn't able to clean up as good. I said no it was fine. They got at least 2 jobs from my recommending them.
Lowest price is not always the cheapest. Tough lesson to learn. Salads for lunch? like others say/have said, it's a pleasure seeing how your crew works together.
Good day for semi-chisel saw chain😀. We see a lot of junk in trees. Feel your pain. Just did a removal that the homeowner cut a hole in the fence in years past and the trunk grew through and around both sides encompassing the entire 6’ wooden panel fence on both sides top to bottom. Owner came home and said: “What did you do to my fence?” 🙄 We ground the stump in both yards and went to the wood shop and produced matching pieces to repair the fence. Good to take the time to do a complete job that makes it easy for your customers. Good job as always August 👌
Mr. Hunicke: I have done and watched many such jobs. Your team is amazing!! To see those large branches sit in the notch the climber cut for them, without unruly swinging when completely severed is the sign of TRUE professionals, at both ends. The crane operator AND the climber setting the suspension point. They don't want to hurt themselves or others or the owner's property.
Agreed! I have done tree work off and on for many years, with both quality and sketchy companies. These guys are classy. I love that there is someone raking the whole time!

By the looks of that house there should have been some contractors and engineers fired while building that atrocity. Seriously, look at the roof lines and overhangs...
Engineers don't do aesthetics - they just make it so the ugly doesn't fall down...

@brdman I seriously doubt you have a home of that age such a low roof pitch. 1890 was before asphalt roofing shingles were even on the market so they were using either wood shakes, or slate tiles on residential homes which both need about twice the pitch of the home in this video to be effective. It's possible they used tin, but it would have been expensive. 1890s is like the tail end of Reconstruction. They'd have been building cheap.

I'm just starting out as a contractor and I think alot of the problem with sketchy contractors is that they have seen a bunch of videos on how to do that and then they think how hard can it be. Also as a new contractor its hard to turn down work but I don't want to take on something that I cannot handle personally or as a company. If more people would just say hey this is not my area of expertise this type of stuff wouldn't happen. And yes I turned down 2 jobs in the last month that I honestly think I could have handled but I didn't want to take a chance and get myself or my company in a bind. Btw I love watching your videos man

Homeowner probably didn't realize all that would go into it for the price and got sticker shock. It can be done without the equipment you bring to the party August, but you, your crew, and your gear all combine to make it a safer and faster job. Good work.
Watch his older vids before the crane...a Masters Class in rigging. He could'a done this job without the crane, but maybe not in a day.

Yeah...me too. I used to run a 60 ton overhead Niles crane with the bucket 40 feet off the floor. Ran it 3 years, then off and on for another 10 years till they made it radio controlled. You had to do EXACTLY what the signals said to do! You couldnt get creative! You had to know how to stop a swing, quickly and safely! I taught a class on crane safety, when the thing went to radio controlled and all the crane-men lost that job and had to go into other jobs at the company. There's a BUNCH of stuff you HAVE TO know! You have to be sober and absolutely NO HORSEPLAY! That'll get someone killed, and quick! I still have a spot in the middle of my back where someone stopped the crane offset and came down and the hook came loose and hit me in the back. (I was working adjacent to the other group and they didn't warn me!) It bruised an area where a rib hooks to my back bone area. Now it itches 24-7 That was almost 40 years ago! Saying all that to make the point! Be very careful. A screw-up can last someone's life long! Don't become complacent!
I have to say August, your videos have been very beneficial to me, for me just watching you bid jobs, deal with client issues, etc has helped me navigate starting my own cutting practice at 59. I work alone and just do felling, some topping and bucking, no haul away or removal, so I do a lot of farms, etc locally where the property owners want the wood, but I've learned a lot about issues watching you deal with them. Your rigging work is exemplary but I really admire the way you handle clients and have learned a lot watching and "listening" to the things you say. Thanks for doing these.

Removing that chunk from the roof U , couldn't have been any smoother... You might drum up some more business if you had some small MB signs to place in customers yards for a few weeks with a youtube channel link so the neighbors can see what a great job you and your crew do.

Cutting down trees takes a lot more than knowing how to turn on a chain saw.
Anyone can cut down a tree. But to control its fall is another skill set
We also use ropes..
I love trees, but cutting them down is hella fun!! Love those Stihl chainsaws, but also had a big bore Husqvarna.
I've been doing it for about three months. There's definitely more to learn than you would think. You got to know how to cut the branches to make them fall in the right areas. You got to know how to notch and drop trees to where they won't hit houses. You have to know how to use ropes so you can just lower branches down. It's a skill set all on its own
So does planting trees too close to structures ☺️
You guys talk about metal in the tree, I’m a retired Fire Fighter and during Forest Fires we use to cut fire bakes. That get really snappy when we hit a Railroad Spike some tree hugger put there to stop logging.
You guys will - if not already have - legendary status. Making mindful, steady, disciplined professionalism look fun.
I don't know why I was so impressed by the mulcher. It's just ate the tree.

You'd really trip out on a industrial tub grinder. I ran one for a few weeks and had numerous vehicle sized logs fly over the working station. Really keeps you on your toes.
Had one when I ran community service program. Big Heavy Flywheel that could eat a tree easily. Told my workers, don't get hooked or try to "help" anything into it. It will eat a body without even raising rpm. They are awesome, but scary AF. Respect.

@@LukeJitsu There's me thinking chippers when for small branches not the trunk itself! I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend. In the uk a tree surgeon friend of mine used to cut the trunk into chunks and sell them to people who made furniture etc.
You guys are SO awesome! Never have I seen such professional tree work. Here you have such a potentially troublesome situation: shoddy work by previous contractors, wires, lack of access, encroachment of house and roof, metal contamination, monster tree, yet you do it all, including stump grinding as night falls. Man that is some chipper that can take such huge diameter of stock! My hat is off to your enterprise.

Considering all the rot in that tree, all those nails and bolts you came across must have been what's kept it from crashing through the roof whenever the wind was blowing!!! (In the engineering field) I always have trouble when I am called in to sort out some other guys disaster. The customer always had it stuck in his head "I already paid the other guy, why am I paying you even more?" and it never seems to come out with the right feeling in the end... They are never satisfied with the result.
(But I guess that is the mindset that got the customer into trouble in the first place)

There is nothing more satisfying than watching a true professional and his team at work. Right after Hurricane Michael attempted to wipe my part of the state of the map, I saw some really good work and I saw some that just made you wonder, "What in the heck were they thinking?" I was fortunate in that I had a company come in that was a joy to watch. Very professional and did above and beyond what I thought the job would entail. I had so many trees down and damaged that I didn't think I'd ever have my yards back. I can't say enough about the quality of work that was done for me and not at a bank breaking price as some people paid and got nowhere near the quality. I good team can come in with the right equipment and the right men and do the job in much less time than some of these newbies or weekend contractors can do and leave you really happy. I saw some jobs that would make August's skin crawl like he was in a scorpion's nest they were so bad.
I can imagine the previous guy watching this video, saying to him self... "Oh...thats how i should have done it..."

Nice work gentlemen. I just paid 3K to have some white pines taken down in my yard in Wisconsin and it was worth every penny. I am sawing up the logs myself, but I'm okay with it. I absolutely believe in what a licensed and insured contractor can do.
What , they built this House around that Tree ? Thank goodness for Cranes . Those other bids must have been super low to compete with a Crane job. Nice work guys. Should have given homeowner a no cleanup option as well & taught him another lesson... lol 😁
And just think, everything above the ground on most oaks is mirrored below the ground.
fear not, he's going to get another lesson in a few years when those massive roots have broken down and his slab starts cracking from settling. Hopefully when he's looking for a slab crew to come in and repair, he remembers cheapest isn't best..
edit: Honestly, i'd be surprised if he wasn't already experiencing slab issues with the size of that Oak and its proximity to the house. That's probably what prompted him to chose removal.

@EveryDay look at the house's siding. Then follow it down toward the ground. You will see in several places where the siding stops, but concrete is visible. That concrete is the exposed slab. That happens when a slab is poured but the surrounding grounds aren't brought to the same height as the slab, or the ground/house has settled differently over time. It's also visible near doorways or garage door. Where the height of a path leading to the door is a lower height than the floor just inside the door.
CRASH ... claims get lawyers involved and they suck worse than cheap amateur arborists/sawyers. FYI homeowners should ask about license and bonding with a proposed bid and be fully comfortable before accepting. Any work on a home costing more than $500 in most states requires a contractor to be licensed under the UCC Statute of Frauds. Case law: a elderly client was able to successfully counter-sue an unlicensed roofer that didn't finish the job before a big rain causing damages. The roofer left the job unpaid and sued the homeowner for full payment with a written contract. Homeowner prevailed in Summary Disposition because of this Statue of Frauds Rule. Result required another lawyer to garnish the unlicensed contractor's income and tax returns. Homeowner wins, eventually.

Looks like this crew is definitely worth the money.
We have the same issue all the time, the clients go for the cheap quote and end up with damage and bad work, sometimes costs them more than the original quote because we have fix the dodgy work, great set up you have and good to see the guys cleaning up between picks and grabs, nice job!

Served 35 years as a solo professional Arborist and never ran out of work . Never any accidents other than popped a rib while hanging on a Sampson 1/2" life / climbing line 80 ft above a parking lot while removing dead wood from canopy.
At 67 now with stage 4 cancer in my spine ,all I can do is enjoy watching what I loved. Last August I removed two 90 ft mature red oak trees 25 and 29 " dia. , chipping up all the limbs , power splitting all the firewood with cleanup. I felt pain in my upper back and in Oct. a CT scan revealed stage 4 cancer in my spine. Without HOSPICE CARE AND PAIN MEDS I WOULD BE IN A WORLD OF HURT. GOD HAS ALLOWED ME THIS
TIME TO GET THINGS IN ORDER WITH MY FAMILY BEFORE I MOVE ON. SEE YA ON THE OTHER SIDE AND BELIEVE IN YOUR SAVIOR.
This ireally all about a homeowner who thinks he knows more than the contractor.
Clearly this gentleman has the proper equipment BUT most importantly he has years of experience, you cant beat that.
Judging by the fact that this homeowner owns a garage that was purposely built around that tree like that, I would say the homeowner is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

One thing I have learned from contracting; doing good work costs money. Pay me now, or pay me more later. I've had a couple "clean-up someone else's mess" jobs over the years. I'll take a smaller margin to have a happy customer that I never have to see again, unless of course they need a different job done. Word of mouth goes a long way, bad words go farther. Great job here. Simple - when you use the right tools and the right people.
Gotta get yourself some carbide chains for those jobs, doesn't cut as fast as a well filed full chisel, but man they deal with metal in the tree like it's not even there.

@@camcleat ... I'm not in the tree business but have used carbide chains in demolition work. (fire department) The guy has a point that they will cut anything but that comes at a price. Carbide chains are expensive.

@@camcleat August is definitely a skilled knowledgeable pro. But what you don't understand is none of us knows everything. And sharing good advice makes us all better. When it comes to cutting tools saw chains are soft and are pretty much junk after hitting metal because the edge gets rounded a large distance. A carbide tooth chain will go right through the metal and keep going. It won't cut the wood as fast because of the tooth geometry needed for a strong edge. But you are not wasting multiple chains and the labor associated.

I can envision some gorgeous furniture from the chucks y’all took down. That robot arm (crane?) that removed them was the coolest thing. So strong. Y’all have great equipment, work smoothly together, and have super knowledge and skill, insight. Trees are really wonderful, but they can be a REAL problem. I LOVE watching..
Do you charge extra when you hit metal or has that been calculated into the price ?
Most arborists will quote the price after assessing the situation. Therefore no extra payment for foreign objects.

@@ayyye9459 almost all of my clients call me for repeat work. Im not saying the honeowner was necessarily wrong but in my 25 yrs of doing this thats a huge red flag and usually more trouble than its worth

@TheMatron'sMilitia let me spell it out for you . they didnt want to pay my price the first two times they wanted to be cheap . from my experience alot of stupid work is done because an owner wants to do a quick fix and not pay to get it done right. Inexperienced or hurting for work contractors will fall for this when it usually is more trouble than its worth in the long run . the home owner unhappy with the work then fires the contractors and now wants me to come repair and fix the other contractors problems for my original bid . I dont know what im going to find when i pull up there work and most likely theyll just want me to patch up some of the previous work . if anything fails on that job im getting blamed for it and im responsible for fixing it . in my experience alot of these problems stem from cheap/ unreasonable owners just as much as inexperienced/bad workers. I have plenty of other work and dont need the potential problems that can arise from all these red flags .ive stopped working for many people for just this reason they try to low ball you then try to get as much extra work out of you as they can and usually ungrateful at the end of the job . if you want the job have at it enjoy your problems. I have plenty of happy reasonable customers that know where to get a quality job done
There's a woman here in Fayetteville that has a similar set up. She has a HUGE white oak growing right next to the house with an alcove cut out....I guess people don't know that one of two things will happen, You'll either ENLARGE the ALCOVE or the TREE will ENLARGE the alcove

I worked one summer with my brother for a arborist doing tree removal. This guy would drop at least one limb on a house or on something of importance to the home owner. One time he dropped a 50’ birch on a picnic table of the home owner which had all of are drinks, snacks, and food/drink cooler. He said that the wind would guide its fall. I found after I quit working for him that he was always buzzed up on Vicodin.

I looked it up because I was reminded of 90's era Metallica circa Black and Load/ReLoad. The shred however came across much more to me as Alex Skolnik/Testament circa The Ritual era (early 90's) It just reminded me of that type of sound is all. Ended up doing way more digging on the guy than I had originally meant to haha. You're welcome to form your own opinion but I'm writing the guy off as a con and would suggest the above as an alternative to him. Did a job with a 4' trunk Live Oak in the backyard had an addition to the house built around it. No drop zone other than the roof, had to cut the stalk into small enough pieces to carry. Then your in the mans house cutting down this trunk, the saw dust and exhaust where terrible.

Accidents do happen. That's the difference between professionals and the others. Right people, equipment, and training. That reduces the chances. Then if and when an accident happens you know what to do. Not just stand there, or run away.

A license is nothing more than a permission slip from the state. Licenses do not guarantee quality work or knowledge.
You're right but a license doesn't last long when you get a bunch of insurance claims, or you get reported. If someone is operating a business without a license there may be a reason for that

So you need a hunting license to hunt, a drivers license to, technically, Drive commercially. A fishing license to catch fish, a shellfish permit to harvest shellfish. Do you see where I’m going with this? What really matters is integrity and honesty. A lot of people do not have those qualities. The customer should be intelligent enough to distinguish who is favorable for their situation. I’ve done many tree jobs without a license and never smashed anything. Also, I am a professional Timber Faller. only in the state of California do you need a license to do my occupation. That alone kind of proves my point😂
I worked in construction and the clients told me on many occasions that our price was often the highest but they knew as soon as we walked onto site that they were getting someone who took pride in their work and wouldn't leave until the client was 100% happy
