A Thin Line Between Love and Hate is a 1996 American comedy thriller film. It tells the story of Darnell Wright (Martin Lawrence), a ladies' man who finds himself stalked by one of his obsessed lovers: Brandi (Lynn Whitfield), an attractive and successful, but unstable older businesswoman.
Lawrence directed the film, and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Kenny Buford, Bentley Kyle Evans and Kim Bass. Released on April 3, 1996, the film grossed over $34 million at the box office against a budget of $8 million.
Nightclub manager Darnell Wright is a perpetual playboy and hopeless male chauvinist. He works for a nightclub called Chocolate City and aspires to be its owner. He trades VIP privileges at the club for favors from women. Though he is an expert at conning women, he sometimes worries about what his childhood sweetheart Mia thinks of his adventures. When the beautiful and wealthy Brandi Webb steps out of a limousine to enter the club, Darnell feels that he's met his ultimate prize.

Della Reese's warning was the best line "15 min of pleasure can lead to a lifetime of pain"
I wish you added a woman for the review and get her view .
When I was young I thought Brandy was the villain . Now that am older it was Darnel , he did her so wrong . He was the pure villain . the signs were there , that Brandy didn’t play foolishness. Lynn Whitfield is tragic villain
I feel like we should’ve gotten a Prequel movie about Brandy and her Marriage prior to “A Thin line between love and hate”
that would go hard🎞️🎬🎥🎟️
@@theville3643 Either that or like they said in the review a Sequel or both combined in one like we get Pre-Sequel so the movie begins with a Court hearing with Darnell and Brandy and as the everything is unfolding in the court room she then goes back into memory of how her relationship was with her husband, who she was before him, who he was a bit and what might’ve went through , and what Brandy ultimately became and how she changed into this closed off person and very guard up women in “ A thin line between love and hate”
Tee knew where Brandi lived because Darnell said it at the club the night he was invited to Brandi’s house. 333 Pacific Coast Highway. Lol
Good catch 💪🏿
This was a great breakdown. I love how you guys recognized Darnell being the villian. And the reason for being a villian is because he's childish in how he handles her feelings.
For the recast, what about Sanaa Lathan as Brandy? I just thought about her role in “Out Of Time”.
Good one. I think she can pull it off
I love how you mentioned a film with Angela Bassett and Lynn Whitfield, imagine a Dynasty inspired film starring the both of them as the matriarchs of opposing rich families. Old Money vs. New Money.
The soundtrack was 🔥🔥🔥
I cannot express, how true this is!!!
I like how Lynn Whitfield was on martin and he broke the fourth wall by saying u look familiar lol
I love their chemistry , the story is still relevant to this day !
Martin and Bobby Brown should’ve done more movies together…. Great Duo
Okay. I think this channel is going to be like the new book club 2.0. If they notify us before the movie review we have time to re-watch it. I'll be straining my brain trying to remember some details. Then get tempted to re-watch it.
Follow us on IG @blackbusters.co. We post the preview of the next movie the Friday before it drops. We'll try to give y'all a heads up in further in advance tho!

They literally have it up days before. I can't wait till Monday comes. Wish I could be a guest
@@vincentkees7928 I was thinking that I would love to be a guest host as well. Too much fun!
So true. I love they have great point. It fun way to relive movie before rewatching. Great disscussion without forcing topic
Martin should play the new Smitty💯
R.I.P. Della Reese , Roger E Mosley
Y’all need to get pop Vasquez on here the way he explains movies is hilarious
In a sequel, I would have Mia, now married to Darnell, be talked into an instructor's position in the Air Force. It puts a strain on their marriage and causes some of Darnell's womanizing habits to resurface. In the midst of their struggle, Darnell and T's club that they now own together starts experiencing financial difficulties. Brandie, who has spent the last 5 years tracking Darnell, uses his plight to come in between his and Mia's marriage and the success of his business using her fortune and connections.
Shut the hell up and take my money
Nigga that’s a Tubi movie
some of the best observations. much respect fellas!
Finally!! Back to some real Blackbusters!
Well done gentlemen. My first time running across you... only did because I was trying to find a scene of this movie to share with someone. Glad I did. Keep it up.
Tessa Thompson could possibly be Brandi Webb but we've never seen Tessa take her acting to that crazy level before
I could see that
Toxic at its finest! Can't wait!
“They mad, they sad, but they not crazy” Bigg Jah hit the nail on the head.
You guys should also review "Mo' Money" starring Damon Wayans
Dope episode but showing up for her to show the house was definitely on the creepy spectrum 😂
The only time Lynn Whitfield and Angela Bassett ever been in the same scene was on a show called Heartbeat bacc in 1989
When I watched this younger, Brandi was 1000% the villain for me and yes, she still is because she tried to kill Darnell and Mia. However, when I watch this older Darnell was the villain for me because like yall said, Brandi was telling him time and time that she ain't nothing to play with. Like she kept giving information for him to reflect on before really going for the kill. Eye contact, body language, and communication. It was all there. I think her previous marriage was abusive and he took her for granted which is why when Darnell gripped her up that triggered her.
Sequel plot: Brandy manipulates Darnell's sister in her relationship to the point where she ends up having a public altercation on her campus. Brandy kills the partner and makes it look like the sister did it. Darnell tries to help his sister by hiring a private investigator. The investigator is able to find a picture of Brandy near where the body was discovered.
Taraji playing Lynn Whitefield character would be dope.
OK, we're getting back to some better films.
Congrats on 20 episodes fellas. Love this movie. My MVP is T (Bobby Brown) because he drives the evil task of breaking the cardinal player rule but redeems himself by going to save his homie.
Regina King now could play Brandy now that she is older 💯
I think Keke Palmer would play a good Brandy in a recasting
Great breakdown! I didn’t even think about Darnell being the villain. He was! What about Nia Long in the recast of Brandy?
Aw damn!! Somebody's getting cooked on this review.
Yo!!!! I just watched Class Onion on Netflix.. And after seeing Janelle Monae. I’d say she could play Brandy. Hands down.
I just randomly watched that this past weekend. I put it on just to be a lil noise to fall asleep to. Janelle's acting as the twin sisters kept me engaged in that movie. I ended up liking that joint because of her.
Great show Fellas! Excellent analysis. Def Top 10 Black Woman Performance of All Time! And I would recast Darnell as Kevin Hart. 😂😂😂 especially for the scene in front of the police station. 😂😂😂
I liked Brandi's character. She didn't turn full on crazy until he put hands on her
Another great episode guys! I am waiting for you guys to give critique on three of my favorite "black" movies . . . Devil in a Blue Dress, A Rage in Harlem and A Soldiers Story. Can't wait for your perspectives!
Darnell read the address out loud off his pager before going to Brandi house the first to smash when he was at the club bar talking to Tee
This is one of my favorite movies!!!!!! The break down definitely took me back! Great work!!!!
Yooo… I’m less than 5mins in and the quote of the day is from Bro. Tone “We get the healthy Bobby Brown, before strokes and shit.”😂😂😂 Yo I’m already knowing this finna be a dope episode.
My ex and I agreed that we would go half on a hotel for my birthday weekend. When he offered to do this, I figured he was trying to be reciprocal because for his birthday, he told me not to buy him anything, but I still made him something with my own hands that matched one of his passions, I also came up to his job and spent time with him the whole evening. For the hotel, I decided to find a place close to his job so that I’d be easier for him to get to. I should have read all the signs because in the process of me finding the hotel his BM texted me on his phone saying some rather disrespectful things…more than once. I let it slide because he said she only comes to get the kid and he leaves his phone unlocked. The 2nd reason why i still went through with it was because the 2nd time it happened (🤦🏽♀️) he called me back and said that he cut her off from that certain access to him (apparently she had a key to his “mom’s place” and would switch taking their kid and they would meet with him there). I took his word for it and continued finalizing the plans. The night before my birthday, I spent the whole night getting myself together because he said he would be there. Of course in the middle of that, he claimed his BM hit him with abrupt plans and wanted him to go pick up their kid and drop off to his mom so he’d be running late. He didn’t show up until about 2am, only to slide in and slide out after 20 minutes. He claimed he had to go back and watch the kid, then he’d be back later on my birthday.
He never showed up. Ignored all my calls and texts that day. Didn’t hit me back until the day after. He said he “fell asleep”. He came back eventually in the late afternoon looking non-present. I had to ask for an apology. I thought we were good. We did our thing again and laid together for only 10 minutes. All of a sudden his BM came up on his phone again telling him she forgot to drop off his “rent” and caused him to get a “3 day notice”. He left again and promised he’d be back. I texted him while he was away, asking if he had at least plans to get food with me, a gift of some sort or a gesture of appreciating me in his life. He Just texted back saying “yup”. 10pm. He later called saying his brother got hit by a car and he was at the hospital. I showed sympathy for him even though I was extremely furious. I still paid in full for the hotel, bought my own food, spent my entire weekend pretty much alone after being his pit stop for 20 minutes both times. I should have listened to how he treated me the first time he didn’t handle his business when his BM harrassed me on his phone. I should have stayed away after the first time we broke up…🤦🏽♀️
The next day, it was time for me to leave the hotel. I took myself back home, the same way i got to the hotel. And basically everything fell further apart without him showing any remorse or compassion. Although i called him to ask how his brother was doing. He never followed up doing anything nice for me for my birthday. We didn’t talk for a whole month. Absolutely no sorry said anywhere. But honestly I appreciate he didn’t apologize because that was the most honest thing he had ever done. Instead of tracking him down or fighting his BM, I cried my ass off, wiped my tears, blocked him on everything, and kept pushing into the future. He never responded to me breaking up but He still social media stalked me and congratulated me for an accomplishment i made later for my job. Still no apology. That was my 25th birthday, during the pandemic. All I wanted was to be with him…
I’ve learned my lesson and I am now in therapy. Sorry for this long comment, Im just finding myself relating to “Brandy” more now that I am older…
Damn….I hope you find peace and happiness. That’s a lot.
@@psiduction Thank you.
I always thought thin line was martins version of Eddie’s Marcus character in boomerang. Martin showed how raw things can get when you’re playing women it’s a dangerous game especially if you go too far.
The way they describe the movies it make me rewatch it😂
2nd time watching. Classic critique. This was fun watching!
I love Danielle on L&O! She cant hide nothing in those business suits.
Love this PLAYER MOVIE!!!! You guys broke this down. Absolutely right she warned him. I agree I would've been with Brandy for her bday and tricked off another day. He broke his rules
Between Love and Hate is like, Fatal Attraction.., Play Misty For Me.
They had her address from the scene in the club after it was closed when she paged Darnell and he was with Tee. Darnell said “blah blah pacific coast highway” and he got up and dipped to her house the first night.
Im glad yall brought that topic up about Martin having a busted blood vessel in his eye. I always wondered what was up with that.
I love this movie first time I watched was on VCR.
38:39 Great content!! I think you guys missed two key moments, first one being when Darnell ends it with all the other women and none of them take it well. Second being that Brandy forces herself onto him before he pushes her into the wall. Maybe these are mentioned later on… I’ll keep watching ⭐️
I love the detail you guys going into
Have Y'all ever reviewed "Claudine?"
I want Brotha Tones white Black Busters Hoodie! Best podcast in the WORLD!!!
A Thin Line to me is basically Tyler’s spinoff from Boomerang. He’s taken what Marcus did in Boomerang, moved to Cali and he’s now the man. To quote @BiggJah real quick 🤣🤣Martin stayed hooking his peoples up with work. Miguel Núñez was Ricky Fontaine on Martin and Biscuit in Life, Deebo had an episode as a maid on Martin, of course Tracy Morgan, Simbi Khali was Laquitta on Martin, Wendy Raquel Robinson was on that same class reunion episode on Martin with Miguel, Daryl M Mitchell was in House Party, Lynn Whitfield was on a episode of Martin. One thing about Martin he hooked his people up. Hol up Bobby Brown was Wendy Raquel Robinson man on 2 Can Play That Game too
I think the MVP Bobby Brown he never switched up in the movie he is what he is he was monumental and he tried to give game to Martin letting them know not to say the l-word and he still came through when Martin got kidnapped MVP is Bobby Brown
Yall need to book Tony and Jae back. Those episodes were the best dialog.
Damn he directed and wrote it. This movie amazing all the way thru
I was waiting on this review. This is one of my favorite movies. Keep up the great content. 🔥🔥🔥
Enjoyed the critique!
Another Great Episode 💯‼️. Daphinique Springs plays a convincing crazy too and she’s a beauty.
A thin line....... man yall dope 🔥
I am loving these breakdowns on movies. Darnell got exactly what he deserved. I would like to see this movie get covered into a series like The Best Man Final Chapters. Can we please get a review on that other 90s womanizing movie How To Be A Player?
Y’all gotta do A Low Down Dirty Shame soon
This a main hitta right here...definitely a classic for the ages.
I can’t wait for this episode!
Me either... should be GOOD 💯
Yall gotta do A Low Down Dirty Shame and Friday
IT REALLY IS THE BEST MOVIE PODCAST IN THE WORLD, YES IN THE WORLD CRAIG!!!👍👍👍👍
Bobby Brown could have played Quinton {Terrence Howard} in THE BEST MAN
A thin line between love in hate, was and forever be my favor Martin movie next to bad Boyz.
This movie is such a classic, like the casting is so perfect
Least valuable was the stuttering friend.
you can tell Jah took some inspiration from thin line for the lesbian homie series as far as visuals and the dramatic elements
Eyes was red because............ he was on the OOOOOH WEEEEE!
Yall be giving some good analysis but keep the guests coming 💯 specially women. It hit different when its 3 people and the energies a lil more balanced
Luv the review and breakdown of the movie.
I thought the pool scene at the end was epic.
And the soundtrack was nice.
Keke Palmer or Greta Onieoigu for Brandy. Birguni Baker for Mya💯
I would've love to see Angela and Lynn on film 🎥 myself as well as Idris Elba and Mahershala Ali as well !
Is This How You Treat A POTENTIAL BUYER 😂
Lynn Whitfield and Angela Bassett TV show Heartbeat 1989
Bigg Jah. Hardest working man on RUclips.
42:35 ... Yo Big Jahh, T and Mia knew where Brandy lived and here's how .... remember the night that Darnell first got the call to go to Brandy's house? (when Darnell, T and the other two guys were sitting around Chocolate City afterhours drinking and talking?) Darnell gets a page from Brandy and he says "333 Pacific Highway" then gets up to go smash for the first time
I know this is old but still have to comment.
In reference to the part about Tee knowing the address remember Martin’s character read the address out loud to the crew. Sht paged him the address the night of the fight in the club.
My favorite martin movie of all time next to the first bad boys
YOOO! YALL SHOULD DO "BAIT"!!
