    I was working on board in the radio room on this very crossing. The amount of radio traffic generated due to the delay broke all records. The ship had one of it's hatches smashed in by a wave and was taking on water, down 6 degrees by the bow until a rough repair could be made. Happy memories!

    I was on this crossing in connection with the airline industry and future connections between Cunard and ourselves. I was woken in the early hours of the morning as the ship rolled to within 1 degree of its maximum roll. All the furniture in my stateroom rolled down the floor and stacked up against the cabin door. I was almost standing straight up whilst still lying on the side of bed. At its furthest maximum roll it stopped and stayed right there for what felt like minutes , I thought we were going to turn over. It was by far the scariest situation I have ever been in. When it rolled back I unblocked the door and ran into the corridor where I saw a steward who also had a very surprised look on his face , I said are we ok and he told me we were fine. It took a lot of believing. Anyway not much sleep that night you could hear the steel screeching as the ship flexed. The ship was holed at the front and they had lost crew cabins that were full of water . We were a day late back into Southampton. We were all given a log of the sea conditions in a presentation scroll. It was a memorable trip and I’ve got to say that all the crew were absolutely brilliant. I’ve still got the scroll. • @hellooohowareudoing
      @hellooohowareudoing Год назад +1

      @@Jay_Dahl If a ship exceeds its maximum roll it will be unable to right its self and will capsize. I'd be interested to know what the maximum roll of QE2 was too!
      Very quick edit as I just did some googling, from the Qe2 Forum:
      At one point the captain (Capt. Hare?) decided to try to turn her but she started rolling violently, finally doing a forty two and a half degree roll - very nearly rolling totally over (43 degrees being the maximum).

    I was on this crossing. All of us crew wanted to stay overnight in Boston, but not a chance. We struggled to remove the steel ropes from the bollards in Boston, we had never been so busy in the radio room and broke all records for ship to shore traffic. There were huge amounts of crockery and fittings damaged.
    What isn't mentioned in this is the fact that the ship was holed when one of the shell doors at the bow was smashed in during the night. A large tarpaulin was draped over the hole while engineers struggled to weld a temporary door in place before they could pump out the tons of water that had poured in.... Still, happy times .... Was on QE2 in September 1989 encountering Hurricane Hugo, Capt Woodall in command. Charming man, but the storm was not a pleasant experience and there was a lot of damage and a lot of people/crew ill. We were two days late arriving in New York. - first trying to out run the Hurricane going South to cross the Atlantic behind it and then slowing to utilise stabilisers in order to reach US .

    Looking at this again today, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that QE2 could take such a bad beating. After all, the Queen Mary - a much larger ship - nearly rolled over when it took a 90-ish foot wave to the side, just to name one of the great liners that have been put in their place by Mother Nature, whether they were larger or smaller than QE2. Still though, the fact a ship that was built for these conditions can still be subject to such a thrashing is a sharp reminder that God is in charge, and that we are but a speck on this mighty Earth that can and will take us if it chooses.

      I would imagine much better. She rides better and, despite her boxiness (not quite the original ocean liner design, but rather a reinforced top-heavy cruise ship), she seems well balanced.
      There are videos of the QE2 in much less rough weather and seas, where she pitches excessively. I can only attribute this to the refit the QE2 (with added decks -suites and tonnage) that made her top heavy (toward the bow) and affected her center of gravity. The refit obviously made her a better cruise ship (suites for more passengers) but affected her stability. I would think the original QE2 would ride this weather quite well (of course, there´s always going to be some rolling and pitching).
      Other liners from that time such as the original France (when she became the top-heavy Norway, she lost her "oceanlinerness") and the Italian twins (Michelangelo/Raffaello) with deeper draft, lower superstructure (=ideal center of gravity) would handle this weather much better (I speculate) just because of their basic design. Windage too is something to consider regarding the stability of top-heavy ships,, but it all depends on the draft (obviously stabilizers for rolling) and the center of gravity. I also wonder how much size contributes to seaworthiness and overall stability; obviously a wide beam - like battleships - gives you a more stable platform regarding rolling, but all these ships have a beam of 30+ meters, so I don´t know.

      If the footage of the last Atlantic crossing in tandem with the QM2 is anything to go by , the QM2 is a VASTLY superior "sea boat ". I was amazed how much the QE2 pitched into the oncoming swell in no more than a moderate sea. The QM2 in exactly the same conditions hardly seemed to be moving at all.
