I never played Tony Hawk games much as a kid. However, I remember snagging American Sk8land a million years ago. I think because it was a used copy that was cheap at EB Games. I ended up loving though, spending hours upon hours skateboarding around listening to Holiday by Greenday over and over again on the sound track :p It was so crazy seeing a handheld produce true 3D environments back then.
Tony Hawk? Is that the bicycle guy?
I think he's a game developer?
Stuff We Play no he’s the Retired Skateboarder who landed the first ever 900 degree Spin
speed demon, r/woosh
woooooooooooooosh
Danny Sweeney stop with woosh you dont know people sometimes never know its a joke
Literally never wondered about that and yet this video was still interesting
American Sk8land is actually a good game. My favourite on the DS, at least.
Need dat THPS N-Gage Port Review asap homie!
would love to do this hahah 🙏
Fr tho
Its alot easier now cause ngage emulation is real now
These games actually looks pretty decent when upscaled on Desmume or Drastic emulators.
American Sk8Land on DS was my favourite Tony Hawk game that came out after THPS3. I guess you could say the series went... _downhill_ B)
OK I'll leave.
Tbh I like every single one of TH games. Well maybe except fot GBC ports, Downhill Jam on GBA, Motion, Ride/Shred and Pro Skater 5 (obviously)
Do you like skate jam?
Thps4 wasn’t as good physics wise but still good and there was a million challenges to do plus big levels. Thug was really good too but everything after that was pretty shitty
"Don't be silly old man, Tony Hawk is just a video game character"
Dolan just admitted he's british, I'm so proud
He sounds more Aussie than brit!
Scotty McLean thank you Scott that was the joke
His accent sounds like maxmofoe, I think he's aussie.
Thought he was South African tbh
@@elysian5028 wdym he is obviously from London
Loved Sk8land back in the day, making my own grafitt, recording scream, downloading other peoples runs videos from the internet. They had a whole webside dedicated to the online features of the game, was pretty neat.
Y'know, 3D DS games shouldn't look this good, but a couple times during the Sk8land and Proving Grounds parts, I was legitimately fooled into thinking these were regular 6th gen console games. Well done, Vicarious Visions.
ya most 3d DS games look on par or slightly better than N64 games, but they had almost ps2 quality graphics in those games.
Downhill Jam looks pretty impressive too
I was shocked with how well Sk8land played. It’s surprisingly great
Saw that you were in my recommended. Gave you a chance. Wasn't disappointed. You got a sub from me. Don't know why it recommended a year old video but still.
i loved this trilogy and i hope you do the PSP ports, since they are the closest to the real games because, well, they are, literally, they are ports.speaking of which, i think this whole "console franchise on portables" format is one you should exploit, its a really fun format.
I will do the PSP games sometime :)
may i also suggest other franchises to tackle the portable versions of?
sure go ahead
The metal gear solid series has a bunch of interesting portable games, while they were not "ports" per se they aimed to replicate the gameplay of a certain game from the main series, the GBC one was trying to be MGS, the first one on the PSP is literally using the engine and a bunch of assets from MGS3 to make a different game and peace walker is the only one that is truly a game of its own. Then you have the rainbow six games, they basically aimed to make GBC and GBA versions of the first couple of games from a top down perspective, its really interesting how they nearly pulled it off better than other console versions.James Bond on portables is really weird, you already covered a bunch of them, but they always tried different things, though weirdly enough i'd argue that the best adaptation and the best game over all is the DS version of the critically panned Goldeneye: Rogue Agent.
Probably the best one of them all is the way the Dynasty Warriors games stumbled their way into last generation of consoles, where they finally were able to do these sorts of games without too much compromise, by doing all sorts of wacky stuff, like splitting the game into separate disks pokemon style with dynasty warriors 6 on the PSP or splitting the huge maps into smaller maps, an idea that came from the first atempt at a portable DW on the GBA, which itself got a sequel on the DS with a weird card system.
@@minimme you could also do most impressive FPS games on PSP. PSPs are cheap and easy to hack, like the easiest thing to hack in existence.
Foot boi is back it again by ruining the hawkster
Actually used to have Downhill Jam for the DS. It's awesome that minime does this niche kind of stuff
I didn't play too much Proving Grounds, but Sk8land did such a good job of adapting the levels. Even though they weren't 1 to 1 recreations, I can totally tell what each level you showed was. That's pretty impressive.
Are you going to review the PSP Tony Hawk games sometime in the future too?
John Enigma my childhood... that game was so much fun
There's only 2 of them, but I'd like to see how Project 8 and Underground 2 Remix compare to the console games
Don't forget about Sony's original game policy so there's like I believe 30% more content.
Yep :)
Underground 2 Remix is basically the same game except at 30fps and with some voice acting removed. Also with bonus levels that all ended up in THAW anyway. P8 is also basically the last-gen console port pf P8.
These Tony Hawk port videos have all been great! Thanks for making them. I especially appreciate you saying everything with proper context. Skateland WAS definitely fairly groundbreaking at the time for me, being able to have THPS on the go was amazing... I was also blown away by the online play features of the first two DS games. Despite all of that they were a bit underwhelming. I think you had a perfect outlook and were very fair to the games. Great work, I'm definitely subscribed now! Also love you videos on handheld FPS!
So Motion is the best Tony Hawk? I'm surprised you would say that.
DEUS EX IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL
4:15 "Vicarious Visions' last Tony Hawk's game ever"
*laughs in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 remaster*
Yeah, who would know then by now.
I'm gonna need some Tony Hawk Ride with footboard cam action, mini.
American Sk8land has a whole Jet Set Radio vibe going for it.
"All the rest are bad after that. Fight me if you disagree"
I'll take you up on that offer cause I'm willing to fight to the death on the grounds that American Wasteland is amazing.
Got a strange sense of nostalgia watching this even though I didn't play any of the toby hawk ds games only PlayStation and Xbox for me. Good times
Watching this because THPS 1+2 comes out on Switch tomorrow and I’m so excited I’m just watching any Tony Hawk content I can lmao
These games are so nostalgic for me. By themselves, they were great games packed with surprising amount of online features. But if you got involved with the online community at the time, it was an amazing experience. It allowed you to join crews, show off your art, participate in contests and eventually in tournaments. The people there were mostly friendly and the administrators were even active and interacted with the community.
When the developers made Downhill Jam, they involved the community by naming trick gaps after popular Sk8land members. I had mine called Travmann's Trick Gap. It was a nice touch from the dev team.
It was a sad day when they decided to shut down the forums around a year after Proving Ground was released.
Shout out to my love of the Tony Hawk games being the main reason I discovered this channel
“Oh man I can’t wait to ride that thing.” -Every Npc
May I request that you do handheld fighting games for GB, GBA, DS and PSP?
Not anytime soon but maybe someday, it's a good idea!
@@minimme
Maybe review some WWE videogames for DS & GBA?
The first two Tony Hawk games on the DS looks like Jet Set Radio
That thumbnail couldn't get any better.
Th DS looks so plastic I feel like crying looking at it.
Tony Hawk's Motion was legitimately my jam for a while
But from the first moment it was all... Downhill.
Graphicly impressive PS2 games.
Yeah, the textures are awesome for a 7th generation videogame
American skate land is what got me into Green Day. First song I heard was holiday.
I loved Downhill Jam when I was younger. I honestly didn't realise it held up, kinda figured it was just a bad lisenced game I used to like.
Sk8land was amazing. Put so many hours into that game.
I'm getting the slightly dumb tradition of watchin' one of your videos before goin' to bed, it's cool having someone review past relics like these. Keep the good work, mate, you're cool :)
Thank you for playing Motion! After playing Downhill Jam on Wii, I tuned out of playing motion-games altogether.
I loved Sk8land, used to play it all the time
6:00 I literally just read that comment.
Editing is on point 👌
Enjoyed this one!
I think your music track ran out there toward the last couple minutes, made it feel a little stark. The rambly vibes were just fine until I noticed that, then I couldn't, uh, unhear(?) the lack of music, haha. Good stuff though :)
Phfew! Glad you’ve showed some of Motion. I recently found out about it and thought it could be interesting.
I love American Wasteland, and I obviously heard about Sk8land, but never bothered to look into it. But now I guess I gotta. From what I've seen here, it looks pretty solid. Like, Beverly Hills and Hollywood really did look like their original counterparts.
Maybe I'll look into Proving Grounds as well. I kinda stopped caring about the series after the PS2 era, but since the DS version is like, just more Sk8land, I think it might be worth to play that one at least.
Yeah definitely worth a go if you're interested, much better games than I expected them to be!
Nice to see another Tony hawk handheld games videos from good o'l Danger Dolan 😁👌
Would be cool to see Homebrew devs using that motion cart for homebrew and emulators, like, Kirby Tilt n' Trouble running on a GBC emulator and using the cart to track the motion sensor.
Matheusfpolis1 Well, from what I've had experience with on the Wii, the Emulator for GB games actually uses the Wii remotes gyroscope for Kirby's tilt and tumble
6:03 omg that’s terrible, but I can’t help but laugh!
I used to looooove Downhill jam on the Ds when I was a kid.
I always loved these versions of the tony hawk games
I didn't know Tony Hawk games looked so damn solid on the DS
I use to love playing down hill jam when I was younger
Sk8land is one of my favorite DS games hands down
The ds games look great with High Resolution 3D Renderingon Drastic DS fior Android, highly recommend checking this on PC or android emulators
American Sk8land was my jam back in the day! 100%ed that thing! Guess I'll check out proving grounds, but it's not gonna be as fun without that awesome level design and verticality :/
I had good memories of American Sk8land and I'm glad to find out it was a good game.
Great video as always. I'd love to see graphically impressive PS3 games THAT RAN WELL. I remember Onimusha 3 on the PS2 very fondly, as it both looked amazing and ran flawlessly. I honestly don't remember seeing a PS3 game that both looked good and ran at 60fps or a stable, consistent 30. Would love to see that.
I spent SO much time with Proving Ground when I was 12-13. I would throw on my favorite Runescape podcast, which is still running to this day, and play Proving Grounds for hours. Outside of that, it really molded my music taste as a young teen, even with the songs being like 40kb/s. At the Gates, Bad Brains, Darkest Hour, Gorilla Biscuits, not to mention a Pierce the Veil song WAY WAY before they got famous. That was a fucking soundtrack, I think I'm gonna have to find my cart, throw on an episode of RSBANDB, and revel in the nostalgia.
proving grounds on the ps3/360 is a great game, and coming from someone who's first game ever was THPS3, I enjoyed proving grounds more than that!
also that soundtrack is insanely good, with pig destroyer, at the gates, foo fighters, silversun pickups, the bled, krs one, etc
Downhill Jam on DS is absoultely lit.
hey i know this video was uploaded 5 years ago but I am deciding on buying sk8land or proving ground so what do you recommend more?
Loving your channel
Rocking the shed nice xD these games look awesome, might have to give em a try
ds downhill jam looks pretty fun
holy SHIT i loved american sk8land when i was younger, it was probably my most played DS game ever
Never knew Steve Harrington made obscure game reviews
Why hasn’t this kid blown up yet? His videos are awesome :)
I actually enjoyed Project 8 on the 360, got it the Christmas following the release and I have partially fond memories of it. Create-a-Trick was fun with the slow-mo and the open world aspect was built pretty well. After that one however is when Tony Hawk REALLY started to get poor (we don't ever speak of RIDE...like ever >.>)
Alright, I just finished American Sk8land and I think it's definitely worth playing. It might be "not that great" when compared to the Pro Skater and Underground series, but It's legitimately better than the home console versions. If you liked American Wasteland to begin with, you're gonna love Sk8land. Besides, it's literally the only way to play 3D Tony Hawk on the go (Nevermind Skate Jam), and I'm tired of waiting for Activision to release anything on the Switch. Do not pass up on this gem.
I really like how well the Tony Hawk formula translates to Sk8land and Proving Ground. Until I got T.H.U.G. 2 Remix on the PSP, they were my way of getting a Tony Hawk fix on the go. Will you be covering that next? (GBC, GBA, DS, PSP?) Good progression.
Taking those sweet Kicks kickbacks, eh?
Now do videos on Ride, Shred and THPS5 plx.
I bought Sk8land and Downhill Jam on DS last year after rewatching Super Best Friends play THUG (rip SBF).
I enjoyed it, was surprised how good it was. Way too easy even on hard but fun. Wish the graphics were better/more polished but it works as is.
Kinda interested in Proving ground on DS now.
You really need to do a video of The Tony Hawk Wii games that would be interesting.
I loved this game back in the day!!!
Sk8land was good but after I beat it I never touched it again and sold it on eBay.
ye it's pretty short
Man, the DS really needed some anti aliasing. The jagged lines are jarring. I forgot how bad it was.
Crazelord91 it had such a low resolution screen, it wouldn't have improved the graphics much. I believe it was only 240p.
192p actually, 3ds is 240p
Arc Derg I think AA even on low graphics makes a huge difference personally. A number of games I play on my PC at reduced res so I can run it well with AA, bc it looks better overall
yodagamer1 Wow, how was that ever acceptable for 3d model games?
Crazelord91 The games always look better on the native console than watching footage blown up at a higher resolution.
Which was the game having a skate on the touch screen to do tricks? I remember a friend of mine having that game years ago (before the 3DS came out lol) but I never knew which one was. Mere curiosity lol
I seem to remember these being compatible with the DS rumble cartridge too.
Sk8land was such a good game, it got me legitimately hyped for Proving Ground. PG wasn't as good, but it was much better than the console version when I played on PS3 years later lol
I bought tony hawks motion in BJs wholesale of all places. I remember my logic being i'd rather leave with a weird game than no game
I remember playing SO much motion when I was a kid, played the absolute shit out of it, 100%. Was actually pretty good back then, but of course, back then.
Downhill Jam was the first game I got for the ds that and Mario Kart and I can say it was one of my favorite games. can't say that for the other ports of this game but nonetheless it was cutting edge for me at the time.
Our GBA boi's back!!
TH Sk8land and Proving Ground on DS look great emulated on Android with Drastic DS w/ high resolution rendering enabled
downhill jam is super fun on wii. really don't get why most people hate it. guess people just can't get over the fact that it is not a traditional tony hawk but more racing. if you forget the big name and just play it you can have lots of fun
Every time you say tony hawks instead of tony hawk, an actual hawk dies
Repeatedly hit --> 4:16 for infinite wasp!
Downhill Jam is a piece of Cake!
I played this so much, mostly for the cheats that were so cool. There is 1 that you jump with moon gravity
at times its almost impossible to see whats infront of you. 8/10 i love that gunna miss the ds's stinging resolution
I didn't know Steve "The Hair" Harrington was behind this channel.
I respectfully disagree! I think sk8land and downhill jam are absolutely worth a play through. I had a great amount of fun with both of them and it’s crazy how big the levels were in both games. Absolutely worth playing for any tony hawk fan.
keep hittin them home runs baby boy x
also where the hell are you recording this video
will do fam and in some shed lmao
Wow this is the first game I feel like I’ve been the only person I know that played all these except that motion one lmao...
Danger Dolan is Dr. Evil and minimme is his Mini-Me.
Probably it's just me, but I think DS Downhill Jam is great. I still play it on my DSi XL
Didn't Vicarious Visions develop the PS1 versions of THPS3 and 4? If they did, I bet that experience helped a lot going into the DS games.
Anyway, great video! I enjoyed watching it, and it makes me feel proud that I was able to snag a copy of American Sk8land DS from a GameStop sale.
I think Shaba games did 3 and Vicarious did 4? Not completely sure though. And thankyou!!
minimme Whoops! You're right, Shaba did do PS1!3. I feel like I should have remembered that, as much as I played PS1!3 as a kid.
And now I have an itch to fire it up and see how rusty I've become. :P
you forgot to mention the GBA legacy camera mode in american skateland
American Sk8land was fucking amazing on DS!
Sk8land was my life! So many memories. You can set a custom damage sound and mine was just me saying fuck
Hope you hit 100,000 one day
