Yma O Hyd - sung by Welsh fans & Dafydd Iwan at World Cup qualifier (Ukraine) & Michael Sheen speech

  • In 1983, Dafydd Iwan wrote an inspirational song about Wales and its unique language and their struggle against centuries of oppression by the English monarchy since 1277.
Entitled 'Yma o Hyd' ('Still Here')
In 1536, the English King, Henry VIII, banned the speaking of the Welsh language. A law that stood until 1942.
Thankfully, the Welsh people kept their language and culture alive. The Guardians of a special language and a magical spirit.
The Welsh language (Cymraeg) is one of he oldest in the world. Incredibly, Ross Broadstock reveals in his book 'Cymroglyphics', a precise link between the Welsh language and Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
Historian Michael Wood's TV documentary 'The Story of England' revealed the Welsh were the original people of England. Ancient carvings have been found in central England in Welsh writing, dating to before the Roman invasion (43AD). Showing it was widely spoken across England.
When the Romans came, many people integrated into the Roman way of life, but after the Romans left, the Saxons and Angles (from Germany/Denmark) invaded England in the 5th Century, which pushed many of the native people to settle in the western lands of Britannia.
The Saxons and Angles then regarded the native people as foreigners in their new Saxon/Angle land which eventually became known as Angle-land (England).
The Saxon word for foreigner is 'Welah', and it is suggested this is where the name 'Welsh' came from.
In the Welsh language, their name for England is 'Lloegyr', which means 'Lost Lands'.
The song Yma o Hyd, is an inspirational song of the Welsh people (the native people of Britain) and their incredible spirit.
    With the lyrics:
    "Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
    Ry’n ni yma o hyd"
("In spite of everyone and everything,
    We are still here")
    "Chwythed y gwynt o’r Dwyrain
    Rhued y storm o’r môr
    Hollted y mellt yr wybren
    A gwaedded y daran encôr
    Llifed dagrau’r gwangalon
    A llyfed y taeog y llawr
Er dued yw’r fagddu o’n cwmpas
    Ry’n ni’n barod am doriad y wawr!"
("Let the wind blow from the East,
let the storm roar from the sea,
let the lightning split the heavens,
    and the thunder shout “encore!”
Let the tears of the faint-hearted flow,
and the servile lick the floor.
    Despite the blackness around us,
we are ready for the breaking of the dawn!")
    "Byddwn yma hyd ddiwedd amser
A bydd yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw!"
("We’ll be here until the end of time,
and the Welsh language will be alive!")
In recent times, some players of the Welsh national football team began singing the song before their games. The fans began singing it too and it has become almost a second national anthem.
In 2022, Dafydd was invited to sing his song with the fans before Wales historic game against Ukraine, which Wales won to qualify for the World Cup Finals for the first time since 1958, where they will face England at the Finals.
Also in this video, is an incredible speech by Welsh actor Michael Sheen, to inspire the players before they journey to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup Finals.
An amazing speech that reflects the Welsh spirit, the beautiful Welsh Choirs, its ancient language, land and mountains.
This wonderful era in Welsh football was started by manager Gary Speed, (who has since passed over to the light), hence the words in the speech "Yma O Hyd, You Sons of Speed". Gary's dream was to lead his country to the World Cup Finals for the first time in 64 years. That dream has now been fulfilled by the current manager Rob Page and the talent and spirit of the players. Hence the words "...it turns the page of the history books and finds Rob's page..."

As an Englishman I have to say this song gave me goosebumps I didn't even know what it meant other than obviously something very important to our Welsh cousins, and then I found out what the words are, and it gave my goosebumps goosebumps.
Having stayed in Cardiff several times, having Welsh friends and an Ex missus who is Welsh, I love and respect Wales and the Welsh people,
The world cup needs nations like Wales for everything they bring to the game. don't stay away guys.
