Another great video. That fifth pillar shook me a bit. Spirituality? My brain immediately thought 'religion'. I had to look up spirituality just to get a better understanding. I stole the following from the interwebs and it suggests what to strive for regarding spirituality (for other dummies like me).
1)Very humble and doesn’t feel superior to anyone.
2)Strives to work his or her duty or task faithfully.
3)Not attached to the material things.
4)Not afraid of losing anything in life.
5)Never looks at the imperfection of others.
    6)Happy.

Great summary. For some that is religion. For others it’s much more generic. All the best

Since I started watching your channel, I have made some huge changes in diet and lifestyle. And I really do feel better. But, there is always more to do….. one day at a time. Thank you for bringing Dr. Steyn in on this very important & informative video, and thank you for all that you do to keep us informed. You are appreciated! Have a great week! 😊

Hi, been following for a bit and your clips have been very helpful. Long post here but hopefully this help others realize there is a way forward. 1) I hope you bring Dr. Steyn back periodically to talk about more specifics. 2) in Nov 2023, (I'm 60 years old), I weighed 28slbs and at a dinner party and "playing" with a blood pressure monitor I was at 149/110. Our host who is a RN, pulled me aside and told me I need to deal with this. I told her I was dealing with energy spikes and lows, very lethargic when I got up in the mornings, woke up 2-3 times during the night. It wasn't good. Fast forward to now, my blood pressure has dropped to 130/95 (not great but better than it was), I stopped skipping breakfast (now I eat 1/2 cup oatmeal with a handful of walnuts, with a banana or twice a week sub in frozen fruit), use the "plate method to eyeball my dinner plate so that I have 1/2 plate of veggies, 1/4 plate of carbs (rice, sweet potato, or white potato) and 1/4 plate of meat/fish/shellfish. I also upped my water intake (not incl coffee etc.) to 6-8 cups pr day. Happy to say that this has resulted in higher energy levels (and it took time to adapt, so not over night or event after a week or two) and I now weight 269lbs. I just got a blood pressure monitor so will have some stats on how that continues to improve. I also incorporated a nutrition tracker into my changes in the past couple weeks and WOW, that has been an eye opener . Caution: you don't want to get hung up on that (learned this from some top fitness people out there), but it will help you understand what your decisions mean to help you adapt your changes and as you make lifestyle changes. What I've experienced sine making some minor changes as I start are: not lethargic in the morning (took about 2 months), feeling full **less reaching for a bag of chips or something in the evenings because I felt full), in fact my tracker has told me I am not eating enough calories during the day for safe weight loss in the past week and I need to find ways to compensate for this. Over the past few weeks my energy level has increased and I find myself "wanting" to do "something" because I have this new found energy to want to go do something. So now I am starting to incorporate daily walks + minor weight lifting into my weekly schedule. CONCLUSION: I work from home and have a very sedentary lifestyle. What I've earned is that lifestyle changes do not happen immediately, small steps are the key to sustained success. I still enjoy my pizza, potato chips, even a slice of carrot or chocolate cake once in a while, but its much more moderated now (+ I find with my changes I often don't feel the want or need to have it) and physiologically liberating which is a win too! I'm not a nutritionist/dietician, just a guy making what I think are more sensible choice to improve my life. END NOTE: If this resonates with you reach out, maybe we can form a group on facebook or something to create a group to help each other...

For me the Pillar of Relax & Rest when it comes to sleep. I'll listen to something to help me fall asleep (guided mediation, sleep story, sounds etc.) but it's staying a sleep is the real struggle - between the hours of 2am-4am are the worst. Sound asleep at 5am-6am just in time for the ⏰ to go off!!

What a great topic, and another charming doc! I’ve periodically drawn a wheel of life, where things like these are measured on the spokes; once you connect them, you see how lumpy the wheel is, whereas a more balanced life makes a smooth round wheel. I’ve never included spirituality or community as an agnostic loner (lol) so my wheel always has a divot - or in this case, my building would definitely be canted due to wonky pillars! May need to consider some improvements!

I just happen to see this come up and I guess it has only been up a few minutes. Anyway, another great video. I think the social isolation one is the hardest for me to control in my life and it really does have a huge negative effect on my health. It's interesting about social media because in a way it makes you feel connected but that also is kind of misleading because all the people are inside of the computer, not right there with you. But it also is helpful, and I think this channel is very good for making lonely, disconnected people feel better because it is positive and health oriented and it's pretty cool to get a comment every time you post. I guess that is kind of pathetic but just that can mean a lot to someone who is alone. Sorry for another long post. I tend to go on too long. Thanks for being out there docs. 💗

    • @chaz6399
      @chaz6399 Год назад +3

I appreciate your comment and the comment of the doctors, but I don't think it's strictly a one-way cause and effect. In other words, though I agree that social isolation can contribute to or exacerbate poor health, it's also true that poor health can lead to social isolation.
The better I feel the more apt I am to socialize. And if I don't feel well, socializing often makes me feel worse.

Rewatching this I am surprised the lady doctor did not mention pets! Studies have shown havibg a pet increases cognitive function as well as providing companionship (community), making you think faster, and dogs help with exercise. (Not sure about whether my darling bunny🐇 helps in that score, but I am doing a heckuva lot more vacuuming, bending down to get to her level.) Plus the unconditional love (ok 1 condition, my 🐇is a foodie) is absolutely over the moon glorious!

TWDs, I hope someday you both could talk about Purine and Uric acidity and their influence on joints and inflammation.
also, thoroughly enjoyed the 2 vids with the special guest, Dr Steyn because my lady was also going through menopause so we both watched together

I'm lacking in the community pillar. I have many animals that give me daily purpose and keep me healthy and happy. Two dogs, two horses, 9 chickens. I miss riding with friends and going to the barn. Riding my horse in the forest...I always say this is where God lives It's my spiritual place for sure. This year I will be boarding my horse out and not keeping them at home any longer. I find it too lonely. At 61 years old I will be starting my 3rd young horse. God help me !! LOL

This is a great video! Movement seems to be my hardest area to incorporate!! Knee and joint issues due to inflammation that I am trying to deal with by adjusting my diet.

Excellent advice. Movement is the hardest for me - but working on it. P.S., Dr Z. - a little bit of flirting is OK, don't worry about it.

    Chicken wings.
I was vegan 25 years, I ran half marathons, ran 3-6 mi a day in heat and snow, and bike commuted 14 mi r/t to work every workday for 12 years year-round during my 40s. My hip went real bad (which brought me to this channel) and I had a THR but my activity levels never returned.
It’s snowing and I just baked a vegan chocolate cake and frosted it with real buttercream frosting for dinner. Because pillars of a life well-lived includes real butter. I’m rambling. It’s the sugar. But I’d love to have my athletic lifestyle back… 🤷‍♀️ Chicken wings. Thanks Docs!

I love this vlog. My primary activity is partner dancing that really covers pillar 2, 3, and 4. I also think that resistance training should be mentioned in the 2nd pillar. I’m doing my best with number 1 but I need help there. As for number 5 I’m not much into spirituality. I do have a purpose in life to be a good friend, father, grandfather, and treat all folks more kindly.

Love to hear her accent! Perhaps next time you could turn her mic up.
