The real secret job market that nobody is talking about is actually modeling for design studios. Most designers can't model or don't have time or are not good enough to model stuff themselves and in automotive industry is not enough poly modellers. At least in Germany. The money is great, no German language needed, but there is just not enough people who would habe taste for design and can model fast. :-(

@@AS-ym2bp check out konzepthaus and design Consulting. Typically those 2 are happy to work with freelancers in Europe as far as I know. German companies like to keep the number of own employees low and they outsource a lot of stuff.

While this job market does exist, it’s mostly visualisation that happens with meshes/subdivision surfaces. 99% of the time NURBS is used for production tooling and actually making the product. 3D artists in this industry will most likely be given messy mesh data or NURBS files to retopo, create accurate materials for and render both creatively and accurately. If you want to design things which are put into production, it’s best to go through industrial design education which does include modelling but is focused more on problem-solving and thinking about user needs, design language and production processes.
There’s a lot of interchangeable skills which can take you from one to the other for sure, but it’s best to know basic CAD as well as polygon/Subd.

In automotive the subdivision is now a big thing and there are no poeple for that. Not many people can really do it

I have really been looking for a modeler job during past several months but not successful. I feel as if this job market is saturated, perhaps also related with companies' budget and requirements for employees' experience.... Thank you very much for providing us with this information on a broad market.
