      Yeah it's easy to say in retrospect that the season would've been better with 4 episodes considering how lackluster the first 8 were, but I guarantee there would've been a shitstorm if they announced that Clone Wars was returning after all this time and then only having 4 episodes

    • @AAhmou
      @AAhmou 4 года назад +52

      ZHL242 Just frame it as a the Clone Wars movie and most would be fine... The 4 episodes can easily fill a movie's watchtime.

    • @Parhelion2
      @Parhelion2 4 года назад +127

      Yeah but I think the last four episodes would've lost quality if they were dragged out for a whole season. Perhaps a movie would've been a better way of giving us what we wanted without all of the chaff.

    • @EricCarter12
      @EricCarter12 4 года назад +239

      Agreed. I think the episodes were necessary to get us emotionally connected to The Clone Wars again as the show was gone for a long time. So The Bad Batch reminded us about Rex's relationship with the clones, that he would go to extreme lengths to protect one of his fallen brothers, in this case Echo.
      And the Ashoka arc, although it was dragged out, it developed her distrust of the Jedi Order as it was not only HER that they had failed.
      So I feel that the additional episodes DID ADD to the final four episodes, and served as a good reminder.

    • @Parhelion2
      @Parhelion2 4 года назад +25

      Eric Carter That’s a good observation and you’re right they served there purpose and to that end I suppose their existence was justified. But I think a lot of fans (definitely myself) we’re connected enough already and I think that’s the portion of people who won’t enjoy those first two arcs. But without them most casual watchers might not have carried through with the rest of the season. A very good observation on your part.

      I think yes, Star Wars fans can always complain. I wasn't happy that we aren't getting a finished version of Crystal crisis. Others want all cancelled episodes back from the grave and even if we had gotten that, people like Marcus would still have said that they were diminished by the initial cancellation.

    What pisses me off more is that there’s an episode in the middle arc where the sisters and Ashoka escape their prison cell from the Pykes, but then the episode ends with them getting captured again in the exact same situation they were in the beginning. Honestly, I kind of think you missed one of the points of the last arc - you’re not supposed to care about Ahsoka, Rex, and Maul, you’re supposed to care about the clones obeying order 66. I feel like the stakes of the last arc and the suspense was about wether the clones were going to die obeying order 66, or if they would be saved. Especially Jesse. All of your points about the previous episodes before the last arc I 100% agree with.
    Edit: Also, even though we knew it would happen, it’s more about how it would happen.

To me this arc was perfect because the viewer knew what was going to happen but not how. We couldn't stop it we could only sit and watch, and seeing each characters reaction was like a punch to the gut each time. While the Clones are one of the focal points of this show, I think that we all knew the clones wouldn’t be saved. We knew they all had inhibitor chips and there was nothing that could be done to save them. Knowing how they survived is great, but that can never compare to the weight of the suspense we would’ve had if Rebels didn’t exist. We don’t see Ahsoka, Rex, or Maul anywhere else in Star Wars media besides Rebels, so without that show, it would’ve been so gripping to be in the unknown

    I think it is very likely that either Maul, Rex, Bo-Katan, and/or Ahsoka would have died in this final arc if Rebels was not made first. Because when the Clone Wars was cancelled, Dave Filoni brought characters from Clone Wars into Rebels because he felt it was the only way to finish the Clone Wars.
    He was trying to make the best of an imperfect situation but had the original plan for the Clone Wars gone through where it was never cancelled and they organically got to the finale, I am almost certain one of if not several of those 4 characters would have died. I especially feel this for Maul and Rex, who's characters never really got development in the Rebels. The story and their characters would have been perfectly served if they died here to make the end of the Republic and the end of the Clone Wars.
    Like this was not the original finale they had created for the Clone Wars. It was adapted and changed to so that it could fit with Rebels and that extends from minor things (like a character from the Solo movie appearing) to major things like character deaths.
    EDIT: I see some replies saying Ahsoka would not have died because she is fan favorite, but that would not be enough to save her. It was always George Lucas's original plan to kill her off in the Clone Wars while Dave Filoni did everything in his power to try and convince him to let her live after the Clone Wars. However, with the purchase of Star Wars by Disney is 2015, Lucas was out of the picture and Dave's vision for Ahsoka won out.
    And to be clear, I'm not saying Ahsoka would have absolutely died during this arc had Disney never bought Star Wars. I am, however, saying that killing her off in this arc was always a very real possibility and even more likely when Lucas was in charge.

      Honestly though, Maul’s death in Rebels works a lot better than however he would have died here. If he died here, it would have been impossible for it to be at the hand of Obi Wan, they likely never would have interacted. I already think that the Maul/Kenobi fight in Rebels is one of the best duals in the series (mostly due to its presentation, it feels very similar to the duals in classic samurai films, which the Jedi/Sith were originally inspired by), but I just don’t think Maul can die any other way than at the hands of Kenobi. That was his entire purpose for most of the show, he wants the kill Kenobi for what he did to him, and I think he needs to be killed by Kenobi to finish his character.

    0:50 I don’t understand how that’s a problem when for the rest of the Clone Wars’ existence you knew EXACTLY what was gonna happen to most of the characters in the show. Anakin can’t die because he becomes Vader. Obi-Wan can’t die because he has to Protect Luke until IV. Yoda can’t die because because he has to train Luke until VI. And we know most to all the Jedi in the show are gonna die anyways, but that doesn’t automatically mean that you can’t have tension or worry for them in the show. If characters like that don’t bother you, then why should these few be an exception? That’s like saying the entire show of the Clone Wars doesn’t matter because we know where the majority of the characters end up. In simple terms, “It’s about the Journey, not the Destination.”

    • @thelastdonut5400

      I think most other clone wars episodes had tensions and stakes unrelated to the main characters tho. Usually theres a seperate character or planet or something that is in jeprody and thats what the tension is built from. I think the best example is Obiwan's one girlfriend lady in all the mandalore episodes. You wanna see her survive and her planet be in peace but you dont know if the main characters can make sure that happens.
      Compare this storytelling to the final Mandalore episodes where the tension is almost completly based on whether people we know that are going to survive are gonna die or not. These are just my thoughts so if you have any ither ideas that'd be cool i guess

      The Last Donut Of I course I get it when it comes from the new characters. Stuff like the Umbara Arc probably does do the best in elements like tension, but I’m specifically talking about Characters they existed before the Clone Wars, because from his logic in this video, why should we care about them if we already know what happens? It just doesn’t make sense that you can’t care about what characters go through if you already know where they end up. It’s like with the Marvel movies. Most people expected them all to stick around because they knew they had to for IW, but you still wanted to see their adventures beforehand. Does that make sense? Idk, I just feel like some of the things he says are invalid with what he’s said before in other videos. :/

    I’m so tiered of hearing the surface level complaint of prequels that “cause we know they live there’s no tension”.
    In Nearly all stories we know the main characters are going to live but scenes can still be stressful. Rewatching scenes full of danger is still engaging when done well despite knowing they live.
    And good prequels (& most stories) don’t even derive their tension from the life or death but emotional stakes. Seeing Batman be pushed to the edge, even though we know he’ll live is still gripping if the scenes cantered on a goal or his restraint not to break his 1 rule.

      I mean it's still valid. Yeah most stories end with the main characters surviving but not all do and that shred of "will this be one of the ones where they don't survive" is what builds that tension. But if you know they end up okay it entirely dissolves that tension. Now it's just left to how good is the stuff they used to fill in the blanks. Thus why he said the last 4 are his favorites cause they filled in the blank with really good stuff.
      If this had come out before rebels it would of had this tension of "do they survive?" because there is already stuff after this that Ahsoka and Rex DON'T appear in so the possibility remained that they could die.

This might just be because me and my friends attached ourselves to the domino squad for some reason, but seeing Rex reminiscing with that picture of Fives and Echo was really impactful, and seeing Rex not giving up hope of echo being alive to the point of going on a suicide mission to find him just hits hard.

    Dude you've said this a couple times and you gotta get over it. A character arc is so much more than "will they live?" It's the characters reactions, what the seige of mandalore was like, maul and Ashokas interactions, etc. Absolutely no one watched this to find out if ahsoka, Rex, and maul lived through it, and that's not why the episodes were created.

    • @sorryifoldcomment8596

      Except they want us to feel that tension? Their survival is a fact and that fact is not respected when it's conveniently forgotten to make the director's job easier.
      They put the characters in life threatening situations in order to create tension. That doesn't work if we know they are going to survive. It's lazy, cheating. Sorry, but you have to try harder in that scene, don't expect the audience to give themselves a lobotomy if they want to feel something in that scene. There's nothing forcing that scene to be there and to do that and go like that. It doesn't have to pretend that fact doesn't exist. It's just easier to do that.
      Look at Solo. No, a Solo movie isn't automatically ruined by knowing Han Solo makes it out alive. Except what it does ruin is when there's a crazy action scene and the movie tries to make you scared they aren't going to make it, in order to initiate an emotional reaction. No. Sorry. You can't get tension from threatening a character's life when you know that character will be fine, it has to be more than that. But directors be lazy and seem to forget that and want the audience to forget that just to make their job easier.
      Keep making it easy, I'm sure it will work out.

      @@sorryifoldcomment8596 alrighty you're clearly very bored if you got that pissy to hunt down my comment to bitch at.
      I don't care about the stakes, and these episodes weren't made for stakes. I know that mandalore is lost to the empire. I know that maul, Rex, ahsoka, and bo katan live. I know order 66 happens. We all knew these facts going in, and it's pretty stupid to think that filoni was trying to create life or death tension for these four characters.
      There are different kinds of tension. Dread for order 66. Seeing maul absolutely terrified of what's to come. The discussion between maul and ahsoka. The tension between ahsoka and obi wan/mace windu. The tragedy of ahsokas faith in Anakin being false. Vader thinking ahsoka died, but still taking her lightsaber.
      This is trying harder, and boiling down storyline tension to game of thrones is working against you. You need to give a shit about what's being presented to you, or stop watching.

    So judging the final arc as "predictable" because you'd seen Rebels already is massively unfair. Just because you know a character is going to live doesn't remove the tension built in the scene involving it. If you watched Aliens before Alien, would you just not care and complain because you know Ripley is going to survive?
    It's a bias and it's pretty unfair to the quality of these last 4 episodes to judge it negatively because of that. What choice do these episodes have? Their plot doesn't know or care if you've seen Rebels already so it shouldn't (and doesn't) pander to either audience. It just tells the story it wants to tell and tells it well.

      @HeronKij He tells us when he's stating an opinion. When he states fact he doesn't have to tell us because it's straight forward and we can all see it. The creators obviously wanted there to be tension in these episodes or they wouldn't have had Rex trying to save Ahsoka as they flew out of the Venator. That's why those episodes aren't as good as they could be. It's not a nitpick when it's literally about the suspense because that is what RoTS was about. The suspense of what happens to Vader. We know he becomes Vader but we don't why. The thing with Ahsoka, Rex and Maul is that they’re pretty straight forward and easy to predict.

      why are people so stupid in the comments. NO you cant make that argument for all the clone wars, because most of the show focussed on people and planets we'd never seen before and had no idea their fates. Obi Wan anakin grievous etc were just some of many character throughout the show.

    • @tannerbarnes7392
      @tannerbarnes7392 4 года назад +5

      @@TrueNorthProductions Did you watch Clone Wars at all? There was a movie character in harm's way in pretty much every episode, in peril for the sake of tension regardless of whether or not we knew they would survive.
      Oh no! R2 has been replaced with another droid and they think he's dead, but Anakin refuses to give up on him? Well too bad he's in a New Hope.
      Anakin is deep behind enemy lines in a stealth ship and Admiral Trench knows how to blow him up in stealth mode? Well, he's contractually obligated to turn into Darth Vader in the next few seasons, so yeah.
      Obi-Wan Kenobi is disguised, trying to survive a dungeon in Count Dooku's palace, surrounded by bounty hunters that would shoot him dead if they realized who he was? Oh, look at that. He hasn't killed Grievous yet.
      Off the top of my head, the only good arc in this show where a prequel character wasn't in harm's way was the Pong Krell arc. Even Sheev got to be in trouble at one point, when Star Wars Godzilla chased him around.
      I seriously wonder how anyone agreeing with Cosmonaut's terrible point enjoyed this show at all. Yes, I know that all these characters from the prequels are guaranteed to live so they can kill each other in movies that I've already seen. That doesn't mean I, or anyone else, shouldn't see the flaw in the argument that no tension can be derived from the situations these characters find themselves in. This argument can absolutely be made for the whole of Clone Wars. Some of the best arcs in the show revolve around the prequel characters and the trouble they get into.

      No they kinda could’ve just released the first four season as the first four episodes of season 1 of bad batch or smth

    • @commander8625
      @commander8625 3 года назад +8

      @@Exonorm27 No they couldn't. The point of the Bad Batch arc in Clone Wars was to establish the characters and test the idea. Bad Batch serves as a sequel to the Clone Wars, much like Rebels. Therefore, for simplicity, the events of the show should take place after the Clone Wars, as it does.
      Having overlapping characters in shows is fine, but having overlapping events (in terms of the timeline) split between shows is risky and requires the producers to add more scenes or details to show the audience when exactly something is happening, which detracts from the pacing and can ultimately ruin a show. Therefore, removing the Bad Batch arc from the Clone Wars and adding it to the Bad Batch show is a risky course of action, and is not the best idea, especially when season 7 of the Clone Wars is already fairly short.
      Now, you could argue that the final arc of season 7 of the Clone Wars did the exact thing I said was a bad idea. That is true. However, there are some reasons that this risk paid off in a way that it can't for the Bad Batch.
      1. The plot takes place during important events, and this is expressed to us with great emphasis. This isn't possible for the Bad Batch since there were no important events happening during the Bad Batch arc in the Clone Wars.
      2. This plot gives the perspective of 2 main characters that fans want to see more of, and other established characters, such as Maul or Jesse that fans also want to see more of.
      3. Usually, the Clone Wars tries to end each arc on a happy note, which draws attention to the arc as you watch it, since you are left wondering how it would turn positive for our characters. This is not something the Bad Batch show can do, since it has no history to draw attention to the direction of the plot.
      4. After watching this arc, we see emphasis on the powerful message that the show has been trying to communicate all along (about individuality).
      It isn't likely that the Bad Batch could have used any of these points above to pull off the same thing as the Clone Wars. Therefore, the Bad Batch show would have to use other tactics to encorperate the arc from the Clone Wars. What tactics they could use to make the time frame clear AND gain traction on the show? I don't know. That's why I think that it is unlikely that this could have been done well.

    While we know what’s going happen, I completely disagree that the final four episodes were predictable; yes, plot wise we know where we’re going, but the interactions between Rex, Ahsoka and Maul genuinely surprised me - character development certainly wasn’t predictable in my opinion
