    Ruud has played five 4th sets and one 5th set in this tournament, and he's won all of them. He's finally cracked the code for playing best of 5 tennis, and with that heavy spin + physical shape he can wear most players down pretty easily. I think there are only 3-4 players who can beat him at RG now. Unfortunately, Rafa is obviously one of them (but never say never).

    • @wastefellow7166
      @wastefellow7166 2 года назад +20

      Serve stats often depend on the recievers position and their anticipation skills. I don't think a lot players on the tour really work on their return position.
      Djokovic has improved his serve so much. But he hardly aced Nadal in the QF. Just 5 aces in the whole match which almost went to 5th set. One Ace per set.
      That is because Nadal work on his return position. He protected his backhand side on Djoker serve.
      Expecting to see a drop of serve stats for Ruud on Sunday.
      Cilic aced 10 aces in a 4 set match. While Ruud went for 16 aces. On paper we all think that Cilic is a better server. But when Cilic plays Ruud, the player who work on their return position actually aced more and returned well and won the match.
      Big serve is often a myth in Tennis. Especially against top level player, big serve means nothing. Against mediocre players even oridinary serve look great.

      @@thedanman6332 The number of aces Medvedev went against Nadal in 2022 AO are 23. Its a fast court. Medvedev showed great consistency in painting the lines. Can Ruud be that good on Sunday and clay against Nadal.
      Felix aced him 7 times in a 5 set match. In the last 6 matches all the 6 players combined aced Nadal for 25 times. The players included Zverev, Felix, Djokovic, Steve Thompson, Botic Van.
      In 2011 French Open first round match, Isner went for just 13 aces in a 5 set match. magine Isner acing hardly 2 times a set.
      You can not Stop Rafa from returning. And Ruud knew that.
      Ruud uses his heavy forehand. Often he penetrates the open court in the backhand side of most of the right handers with ease. That's going to be Rafa's forehand. Rafa will go for Ruud backhand as usual. How much damage Ruud can do with his backhand?
      Zverev's beckahand was on fire yesterday. His forehand was also great. Zverev was playing long rallies too. And also serving great. Still not enough to win the first set against a player whose mighty forehand was hardly working.

      Ruud had the 4th best odds to win this tourney for a reason. A lot of people expected him to have this kind of success here. The issue with Ruud as a top 10 player will never be clay; it'll be that he's overpowered by the tip top players on other surfaces. Ruud can't consistently beat the power hitters in the Top 10 on grass or asphalt.

      You don't need a powerful serve on clay. If you have a serve with a lot of movement and spin, it's better because the clay already makes it difficult to pick up on spin. That's why Nadal dominated the French Open for so long because he used to spin to take advantage of a wacky surface that slows down the ball and makes it twist and turn in strange ways due to the friction caused by the clay and the ball.

    • @nicrow1369
      @nicrow1369 2 года назад +18

      @@RobbieStacks90 - just to be clear here, Nadal hasn’t dominated the FO due to his serve. He’s dominated due to many other reasons. Serve isn’t quite as important on clay as other surfaces (you’re correct on this) but Nadal has dominated due to his forehand, movement, mental strength, and his ability to improve his all aspects of his game (including his backhand and volleys). And being a leftie hasn’t proved a disadvantage either!!!

    • @Diogene_Balbeur
      @Diogene_Balbeur 2 года назад

      @@RobbieStacks90 There is nothing "wacky" about that surface, stupid as. There is nothing "strange" neither. You say this because you're comparing to other surfaces as reference. But they are NOT reference and every esthete would tell you : playing on clay IS tennis as we want it, not a robot-serve stupid sport (i.e. Sampras/Federer on Wimbledon). But, MORE IMPORTANT : no, that's NOT "why Nadal dominated". Nadal dominated because, overall, he's a way more complete player than competition, more well-rounded, and more precisely : MORE TECHNICAL.

He has won more matches on Clay than any other player on tour in the last 12 months, and is ranked no 7 or 8 in the world. I can see him winning his first Slam on Sunday if he plays at his best.. The fact that even Cilic couldn't hit through the court tells you how heavy and slow the conditions were. Great performance by Ruud considering that it's his first time going this deep at FO but he was definitely the favorite considering the conditions and obviously because it's clay

    • @anustart-loveeachother7680
      @anustart-loveeachother7680 2 года назад +3

      That’s actually not quite true, the conditions also hurt Ruud as his spin didn’t really get uncomfortable for Cilic due to the slow bounce. Nadal himself said in his press conference today that these slow and heavy conditions favour big hitters and hurt true clay courters like himself

    • @MrAtaguas
      @MrAtaguas 2 года назад +1

      @@anustart-loveeachother7680 no the heavy conditions should help your topspin I think because in high humidity the ball absorbs moisture and the fuzz "interacts" with the air more and encounters more drag i.e. the ball should have more rpm. The top spin doesn't necessarily make the ball bounce higher because that's up to the court which in cooler conditions will lower the bounce but the greater drag does slow things down because of how the ball aerodynamically interacts with the air
