To be fair, I think a fair punishment for the Fire lord wasn’t death but having his bending taken away. He went from being one of the most powerful benders in the planet to being a powerless man in a world where everyone else can use bending in a daily basis from the smallest of things to the biggest. Death? Sure he seemed to deserve it, pretty sure Zuko and everyone else that the fire lord tortured directly or indirectly thought so, but the best punishment for a powerful being is to take away the thing that made them so powerful in the first place. Aang literally denied this man the death of a warrior and he will never get that opportunity again for the rest of his life. For a man like him, that is worse than death.
@@aPeachWhoLovesYeshua thank you, something I thought about since I have seen those videos of Aang essentially and unknowingly killing a lot of fire nation foot soldiers but for some reason sparring the fire lords life and then watching this short.
There is a theory that Gyatso took the air out of everyone near him with himself in there because his clothes and his necklace aren't burnt and the soldiers are not near enough to kill him
And considering that the fire nation didn't bother to go and collect the bodies of even their own soldiers shows that the expedition that carried out the attack was in such bad shape that they couldn't carry out retrieval operations.
Well they nost likely sent their best soldiers and firebenders to 4 points around the world in secret and before (I think) they had steamships. @@harrisonkearney5619 I can think of several reasons the firebenders won, the element of surprise, more advanced technology, better military strategy, better training, better propoganda, etc. The firebenders were a nation built to dominate, their culture was based on Japan from ww2, they are super nationalistic, view themselves as racially superior, and they truly believe they are doing what is right and that this will eventually save the people unfortunate enough to be born outside the fire nation. On the other hand, the air nomads struggle excessively with killing, even in self defense. The firebenders are eager and determined, believing that their actions are just. Where as the airbenders are indecisive and scared, unsure whether or not it would be morally acceptable to defend themselves, and whether or not they personally would be okay with it killing in self defence. Most airbenders likely died without fighting back at all. I'm not sure if it was losing Aang that hardened Monk Gyatso or hearing his students being murdered and his home/temple destroyed, but either way, he was seemingly one of the few airbenders with a resolve strong enough to kill in self defence.

Gyatso killed at least the entire room by removing the air. But he was deppressed from Aang's disappearance and didnt bother at least saving himself. That or he (unsurprisingly) didnt have the training to use a one shot aoe attack and survive. He probably wouldnt wanna live with knowing he killed those people anyways.
I assume it was a last resort in order to protect other monks who were fleeing. Gyatso and almost all the monks went by the example of trying not to harm people. Unless absolutely necessary, I doubt Gyatso would have done anything that extreme. It should also be noted that by removing the oxygen, he knew he was going to die as well. A punishment of breaking his oath, too, perhaps.
The monks werent so naive and defenceless. Thay knew that in order to stay peaceful they had to be strong which they were and thats why the fire nation didnt attack them until the comet. Another evidence is that they told aang that he is the avatar at the age of 12 instead of 16 in order to start training him to defend the air nation cause they understood well that they needed his power

Just a friendly reminder that the Fire Nation attacked the Air Nomads during Sozin's Comet, which means that Gyatso didn't just kill 15 normal firebenders, he killed 15 firebenders who each had the firepower to take down the walls of Ba Sing Se by themselves, and he did it solo.
I read somewhere that iroh is the most skilled firebender in existence.... I really don't think an average firebending soldier could have taken down the wallas of ba sing se .......altho they wud have been pretty strong
@@bilalyaqoob9216 With the firepower granted by Sozin's Comet, they could. That was the whole point of defeating Ozai before the comet, because he was planning to use it to burn down the entirety of the Earth Kingdom.
@@christianrose9166 Yes but Iroh was using the power of the comet to take down the walls... Iroh is nearly as powerful as Ozai himself(he was originally supposed to be fire lord after all) If a bender as powerful as Iroh needed the comet to break the walls, an ordinary foot soldier almost certainly wouldn't be able to even with the comet. This isn't to say it didn't make them _extremely_ powerful, and we really know very little about the power level of pre-war soldiers, it seems to be implied over the generations the quality of soldiers has gotten progressively worse and worse on all sides since the war began... At the beginning, all sides were probably comprised of all-bender armies, but as more and more of the experienced benders died, they began filling the ranks with non-benders and less powerful benders with less training and experience. It's my honest belief that the Fire Nation army circa the reign of Ozai couldn't have defeated the Airbenders at their prime, even with the comet and the element of surprise, for the genocide to be as successful as it was required the perfect timing as well as a very experienced army. (It's important to note that vehicles like the war balloons and tanks that would've allowed them access to the temples via flying and climbing respectively hadn't been invented yet, so all those fire benders would've had to have flown into the temples using their own fire bending.(only Azula is able to fly with fire bending in the OG series) So, that means they'd have to be pretty advanced firebenders to even get into the temples, with or without the comet. In other words, while they might not have been Iroh levels of powerful, they were certainly way more powerful than the grunts Aang beats up in the show.
@@trainknut Umm... Iroh is not 100 years old, and the comet only comes around once every one hundred years. It is chronologically impossible for him to have used the comet's power. The reason him breaking the walls of Ba Sing Se was such an accomplishment is precisely because he did it without the comet's power. As for soldiers growing weaker, that's most likely because the world is technically in a time of "peace" (even though it would be more accurate to say that they're in a stalemate). It is a general rule that in peacetimes, an army is at it's weakest. An army is only strong and useful when it's put to use in war, so an army standing by doing nothing is pointless. Those soldiers have to make a living somehow, so they become guards, mercenaries, bandits, whatever it takes to make money, but the result is that the later armies become full of new recruits and aged veterans. The recruits don't know what they're doing, and the veterans can't fight like they could in their younger days. This is true for every army in every culture, and that's most likely what happened in ATLA. So, yeah. Iroh never used the comet's power until Ozai's invasion attempt, where we see that the average soldier is capable of reducing forests to ash. It is safe to assume that if these soldiers are capable of that level of destruction, then they were capable of the same 100 years before that.

That realization that Airbenders live a life of nonviolence because of how incredibly easy it is to kill people with airbending. They literally are just trying to make it so unthinkable that they never think of how to do it.
Right? Think about how dangerous Zaheer was in LOK. Now imagine an entire culture of people like him. Any talented air bender that wasn't a pacifist would be one of the most dangerous people alive.
I personally like the theories that when Gyatso killed those soldiers it was a murder suicide, where he trapped them all in a vacuum and they all suffocated, because he wanted to repent for what he was going to do.
My theory was that Gyatso was cornered and when the soldiers blasted their fire, he trapped the flames into a air bubble. The fire was compacted but the surrounding air was feeding it and intensifying the heat and pressure of the trapped flames. Gyatso may have lost control of air bubble and once released, the fire burst out in an explosion, killing everyone within the blast range. And considering the state of his remains, the fire never touched him but the blast slammed him into the wall and he got injured. With his old age Gyatso may not have been able to move and probably suffocated from the smoke in the room before he died.
I think people misunderstand pacifism and what that means when faced with something like war. If someone beats you up and you dont fight back that would be concurrent with pacifism. If someone kills many people and you have the power to stop them but dont...that isnt pacifism. Thats cowardice. The shaolin monks are good examples of what happens to pacifists who must endure war.
This is more plausible by the fact that, Gyatso wouldn't just sit there till he dies, he would probably look for survivors, and also because there were not burn marks in the room, meaning it wasn’t even a fight
...that's a technic invented and use only by Zaheer (I take you were joking and it was funny just in case you actually didn't know I thought I tell you)
there is a possibility he did the oposite and filled it with so much air there lungs pop... everybody is so lame by saying they would choke them... no no no... you gotta drown them in blood with internal bleeding and unable to take anymore breaths. much more painful and quick death. way more effectiant since firebending comes from the breath. making them unable to breathe without choking on blood would make them unable to bend and defenceless. realistically there was no chance in hell firebenders could kill the air nation... better yet just form a bubble in there brain and instant death... yup thats right he can straight up instant kill ANYBODY by simply putting an air bubble in there head

Honestly if you think about it there is zero reason the firebnders should have ever won that fight.
But like that wouldn't have been a good show.

Iroh is nearly as powerful as Ozai himself(he was originally supposed to be fire lord after all)
If a bender as powerful as Iroh needed the comet to break the walls, an ordinary foot soldier almost certainly wouldn't be able to even with the comet.

@@magicalminty6203which is probably why anybody who displayed airbening capabilities where taken to the air temples.
Pacifism is stupid and suicidal.
Well, this is all fairly freakin' brutal.
