My very first Synthesizer. I bought one in 1993 here in Germany and had to sell it some years later. Now i bought one 01W three years ago and i still love it.
I just took mine out of the case after not playing for over 15 years. I produced alot of albums on this keyboard. I still have alot of the TDK 1.44MB disks that you would save your sequences on. Had a good chuckle listening to my old sequences that I tracked way back then. This keyboard traveled with me all over the world too. Never parting with it. I also still have my Roland JV1080 module too!
I keep trying to tell people about how synthesizors became so lush and incredible in the 90s on online forums and how ridiculously limited the old analog two or three oscillator synths seemed in comparison to the multi-timbrality and tonal complexity available to the new digital modules and workstations back then, thank god you are here breathing life into the synths of those times to demonstrate their awesomeness. Maybe you will do a video where you have one workstation keyboard like this one also MIDI'd to multiple sound modules and/or other multi-timbral synths to demonstrate how truly massive and immense stacking of digital sounds can become, even this keyboard on its own is already HUGE, that Nightshift pad is truly humongous.
Even among modern synths.....20 years later, the 01W is still one of the best ever! Definitely a top 5 in my book. Just listen to the video.....Synthmania does a great job of highlighting the presets.
Just got mine, haven't gone through all the presets yet, but it's just the kinda sound I been looking for. Really special sounding pads and bells in here.
fantastic! Between the M1 and the Trinity/Triton this board doesn't ever seem to get the attention it probably deserves. The sound is right there with the Ensoniq TS where it has more definition than the late 80's ROMs but still has a bit of that surreal synthetic quality that starts to get lost in the second half of the 90s as the waveforms get longer. Awesome pads man!
Analog Pad, Borealis, DreamWeave, and Heavenly I remember hearing on JMJ's 1993 album Chronologie - also, DreamWeave, NightShift, and Wonderland I remember on Enigma's "The Cross of Changes" and "Le Roi Et Mort, Vive Le Roi" This synth was probably used on hundreds of recordings back in the 90s, but those are just some I recognized instantly. Amazing instrument.
This (along with the Wavestation) is one of the finest synths from KORG in the 90s. The demo song "Rock Show" is one of my all-time favourite synth "factory" demos. Brilliant then. Brilliant now. Love it. Thanks for this one.
This is a great synth with great sounds! I couldn't afford one myself in the 90s as I was only a teenager, but I remember playing one for a good few hours round a mates place whose dad had one. I remember finding the "Nuclear Sun" patch on it too which is used at the beginning of Babylon Zoos Spaceman
Nice performance Synthmania !!. It's still a beautiful instrument. Got it (Korg 01W/FD) in 1992 when it was just released and was blown away immediately. Back then I produced tracks with the user-friendly internal sequencer. I recently posted an 28 year old track, based on possibilities the internal sequencer if you are interested.
I listen to a lot of underground early 90's Trance music. It's nice to see from which synths some of the ambient intros come from. I can't get enough of those spooky, goosebump inducing pads. Really cool stuff!
This model was particularly known for having one of the most realistic acoustic piano sounds coming from a synth at the time. The Korg M1 piano was VERY tinny.
I love listening to Heavenly so much I had to learn how to play it, I mostly picked it up by ear but I'm pleased you have a video with your hands showing for the finer details. You said to another person that this was improvised which is a credit to your talent. The music is short and perhaps unfinished so if I ever extend the composition I will drop you a link :)
The Korg 01/W is a beast, such a powerful Workstation, I'd say one of the most powerful synths ever! Especially the Waveshaping has such a unique sound! A bit reso filter like, a bit FM sounding too, but still unique! Nice playing!
Absolutely ! Many people didn't understand this feature -I think. Since I'm both a programmer and played with sounds on the computer, the Waveshaping is a tool and you are the sound-engineer. Later korg produced Wavestation if I'm not wrong where you could put 4 different sounds on a sound-layer and with the joystick moved the sound f.ex. from piano to strings with smooth steps. But with the O1's ws function; you directly create new sounds, save them and use 8 of them as a layer. With velocity function, you can make these sounds played independently based on your typing speed -here lets remember the aftertouch function... As an engineer; I clearly can see that this keyboard is a sound-engineer's a "must have" tool. I'm happy to own O1 and 2 digital sound bank cards :)
@@hirowaysat8771 Wavestation was released 1990 , one year before 01 :) But you're correct, the 01 is a sound designers dream! I'm composer & arranger and often use the presets, but it's cool that others use the synthesizers to actually program and create new sounds, that's awesome!
That Dreamweave sound at around 2:47 would seem to indicate Trevor Rabin used that patch as a basis for one of the background synth sounds in Endless Dream on Yes's Talk album (kind of fitting, I suppose). He actually did a piano bit on that tour, and I'm 99% positive he used a 01W for it...
Never had any troubles with this warm and heavy KORG-beauty, except for one time: replacing the battery ;-} I love it, love it, love it! Once sold it, bought another back, two years later...can't live without this other example of KEIO ORGANS in it's most extreme loveliness. Really nice video and synth! I own one. You can hear his sounds on Vangelis "Conquest of Paradise" (Wonderland pad for example) and Jarre's "Chronologie".
Wonderland pad sound also begins Ian Hammer's "Theme From A Modern Affair". Nice workstation. I've got X3 named by some musicians as "01/w successor" but X3 hasn't all samples required to recreate all of these 01/W pads (I found patches for Analog, Borealis and DreamWeave sounds). I wonder if Korg create synth/workstation with all of it's previous digital models samples - not only legends like "M1 Organ".
