I heard Musak-Mongoloid at a shopping mall in about 1990 or so, mixed in with the usual sonic pablum. Couldn't believe it. It gave me hope to know that someone somewhere in the pipeline was cool.
I was in a second-rate department store about thirty years ago, and heard a Muzak version of Frank Zappa's "I Am the Slime (On the Video)" playing. Perhaps such things were more common than we realized? =^[.]^=
Hah! Me too. My older brother picked up his first Devo album in about in 79 with Duty Now for the Future, then almost immediately bought the first album as well and he went on to purchase every album from there on through Shout!. Being the younger brother, I was naturally along for the ride and am a huge fan of all the original albums. The "compilations", remixes, and much later albums really aren't the same so I never cared for them.
I FELL back in love with devo about 10 years ago and ever since then I gave up all othrr music. .im all devo all the time now. I listen to them every day. Devo is to me like cocaine is to Donald Trump Jr. I can't live without it and i need it to function.
Thanks for posting; track 21 wasn't on the EZ listening disc. These aren't garbage just because they're in the style of elevator/supermarket muzak; a lot of thought and care went into these alternate arrangements. It's meant to calm you down. At the same time it's a part of their satire. I remember reading that Neil Young was offended that they put cheap marketing gimmicks in their album sleeves; he just didn't get it.
We were at the New Tradionalists concert in Pittsburgh, late 81, or 82, and elevator music was playing over the pa system before the concert began, it sounded familiar, and we realized, it was DEVO set to different styles, I don't know if all the songs on this album were played, but, I snapped this up when it first came out. More awesomeness from them. Love it.
Yes, I too attended a few different Devo concerts and this was the pre-concert music. They called it muzak at the time. It was also came as a bonus with the album as a cassette.
I don't know if there was a particular album or bootleg release or what, but I also remember our friend next door who was my older brother's age(they were both into Devo and bought all the albums in the late 70's/early 80's) gave him a home made cassette with the handwritten note "Bedtime Muzak" written on the label as well as the packaging gift card for Christmas. It was filled with something like this but not sure if the same or not.

Holy crap that woulda been cool. I woulda never shut up about "a literal PA system", and enough for "Devo!" to become an exclamation of awesomeness as opposed to dorkiness. Didn't this come out in the 90s? I wish they would include the release year. Also wish there woulda been a whole Dove album
Im poor .... so I got a refrigarator box and I sit in it and pretend its an elevator. Listening to Devo on my Walkman. I love it . ps: 2 hits of Acid enlivens the whole experience.
I haven't found it yet, but I remember hearing that they put out an even longer CD edition, many years ago, with LOTS of new tracks! So great to find all this DEVO online, now, in any case!
The cool weird banjo-y rhythm in Beautiful World is from an obscure electric organ from about 1976... it came with these very odd clear, square, acetate sheets that had a very wide spiral printed on it, at first I thought it was just drawn on with a sharpie. About 10 inches square, fed into a slot like a dollar bill in a change machine. But it somehow was able to read that and play as a backing track that you could play songs to. (not Devo songs lol) I think it came with about 12 sheets/songs... I don't even know if the info on the spiral was analog or some early version of digital. My friend's mom owned it, I have no idea the brand. I bet there is not even one working unit left on the planet!
@@deanparis6180 they’ve become popular again. Prices are up a little, but you can still get them pretty cheap because they take up some room, as you know.

On a radio show this morning Mark Mothersbaugh talked about creating these versions to play before gigs to stop the sound engineer playing normal muzak that didn't fit. It's here: ruclips.net/video/eULilLiRdv8/видео.html and his part starts at 15.50
The harmonica on "That's Good" immediately had me thinking of Charles Bronson's character in "Once Upon a Time in the West". I might not be able to watch that movie the same way again.
When I first learned of this record 40 or so years ago,, I assumed / hoped it was orchestral versions of DEVO songs by the real Muzak professional studio musicians. I really wanted to buy it but for some reason I never did. I was a little disappointed that it turned out to be the actual men of DEVO doing their own music - but now that I’m finally listening to it, I like it.
In the later half of the seventies....disco mania, decline of late 60s rock legends Devo emerged. Of all the music in the era DEVO is the only one to chronicle the bizarre mindset of the USA; the commensurate mental de-evolution. Which is ongoing. The end of the beginning of the end for the Middle Class USA. BIGLY !
I wondered if they'd fallen out over that. I remember halfway through the "Something for Everybody" album Jerry got pissed off by saying "Mark has killed the project". It surprised me that they did the "Hardcore Mutations" tour but you can tell Mark isn't into it any more as Jerry does most of the singing these days. It's a shame as S.F.E was a great album, I wish they'd have followed it up though. There's still a big question mark hanging over this Devo Documentary too from Kickstarter. Jerry keeps blaming Mark for the hold up and I don't think anybody has had an answer from him regarding the release. I missed out on donating to that back in 2012.....I'm kind of glad now as there's a whole lot of angry people who feel duped as nothing materialised.
Yeah, it's really disappointing. They only have so many years left to tour and Mark just wants to hole up at Mutato and stick to scoring movies and TV. Thanks Mark! I'm sure he gets paid way better for his film work, but that's a piss poor excuse to deprive the world of Devo when we need them the most! It's all screwy.
he is well off financially that why bother touring when you can just stay in a studio and do an album every single day? actually all of them are though at this point as someone who never had the opportunity to see them live, i'd rather them just do their thing then go and see a pretty sloppy performance (now) compared to even just a few years ago
This is much better than I expected. There is a kazoo-like instrument that I feel like is a bit overused and grates on the ears after a while, but otherwise it is neat to hear the continued passion for the originals while not feeling completely bound to them creatively
This will go into the drawer with Safer than Milk,Mystery Tour,Electric Tommy,Electric Larryland,Marty Robbins Western Ballads,Celluloid Heroes and the other cool stuff

Love how they record the guitar as lacking any balls whatsoever! It’s this weak, hopeless tone.
