The US helped orchestrate a coup that overthrew Mohammad Mosaddegh, who was, from my understanding, a lot more popular than the Shah and did more for the country, and Iran prospered under his rule. When the Shah took power, much of the country became impoverished, or at least fell lower on the class spectrum.
America is largely at fault here, and I, as an American, who is largely proud of his country, am not afraid to admit the sins of our country.

Mossadegh was the APPOINTED Prime minster of the Shah! Shah is not the name of some guy who came into power after Mossadegh! "Shah" means king/emperor.
The Shah of Iran during 1941-1979 was Mohammad Reza Shah. He became the Shah of Iran in 1941. The Shah appointed Mossadegh in 1951, deposed him in 1952, appointed him again in 1952 and deposed him in 1953 when Mossadegh dissolved Parliament and Senate without Shah's consent to dodge an impeachment. Mossadegh defied the royal order so army was needed to remove him. If Mossadegh was SOOOOOOO POPULAR, it would be impossible to remove him after 3 days!
The economy of Iran grew rapidly under the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah EXCEPT 1951-1953 when Mossadegh came into power and made Iran unable to sell its oil for two dark years!
