  • Historic Prescott in central Arizona was once home to both Virgil Earp and Doc Holliday. Today, it's home to thick pine forests, high desert, beautiful hikes and stellar RV camping. While boondocking in the Bradshaw Mountains of Prescott National Forest south of town along the South Senator Highway, we explore Prescott, and hike to both the top of Mount Union and the Giant Alligator Juniper Tree, an informal memorial to the 19 men of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire near here in 2013.

    ABOUT US
    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a RUclips channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on RUclips, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

    What a perfect spot. Yes. We need some cool temps. 90s in Central Florida. I’m glad they have designated areas to protect the area. Fire rings. Cool. Free dump station. They deserve a shout out. 😫 ATVs. Cool history of Prescott. I am a major tree hugger. That’s a sad story about the firefighters. We saw the movie. So sad. What a touching memorial. What a beautiful area. You always make amazing videos. Stay safe. Stay positive. Alice

      None at all, Bill. In fact, we specifically addressed that in a couple of episodes on camping security. That said, we do throw cable locks on a couple of high-value items like the solar panels. Of course they won't stop a determined thief, but it will discourage a casual one.

    Marc,
    I'm curious about the trees in these mountains. You mentioned juniper trees. Are there any others like white pine or other furs? Besides the juniper, what survives in the more arid mountain rangesof the southwest?
    Gord

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 года назад +2

      The Bradshaw Mountains aren't so arid, because of their elevation they get much more moisture than the surrounding desert. The primary tree is ponderosa pine, accompanying those junipers.

    So how do they keep track of how many days you've been in a dispersed campsite? When your fourteen days are up can you just move to another site in the area? Loved the video one of my favorite areas of Arizona.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 года назад

      It varies, Timothy. In some areas you simply have to move. In others you must move a minimum distance, and in some others still, you have to leave the National Forest, etc. for x number of days before returning. Rangers typically patrolling the area take note of who's where for how long.

    • @johnhouchins3156
      @johnhouchins3156 4 года назад

      NFS rangers DO patrol the forest and take down plate numbers. No, you may NOT just move to another site in the area. You are limited to just 14 days out of 30 in the WHOLE FOREST, not your campsite. To comply with the law, you'd have to visit two OTHER forests before you could return. The idea is they want CAMPERS, NOT RESIDENTS in the forest. This is for the whole country, not just this area. They DO ENFORCE it here though.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 года назад

      This may sound crazy, but in the 15 years I've lived in Utah I encountered precisely one rattlesnake. That was in Big Cottonwood Canyon while rock climbing, just outside of Salt Lake City. I tend to do my best to try to stay away from snake habitat. In fact, Zoe has not received the rattlesnake bite vaccine.

    Beautiful area, Marc!! I've never seen a fire tower in person. Are they freely accessible in general?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 года назад

      It varies. Sometimes the stairs are blocked off. Most times, as was the case here the building atop the tower is closed, but the stairs are open. Occasionally, though, you encounter one that's fully open. I actually haven't been to one in years, actually, as they're far more prevalent in the forested mountains of the East than they are out west. We used to hike to them all the time in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. They're mostly abandoned as they're now largely obsolete, replaced by observation aircraft.

    It's PresKITT, NOT Prescott. Pronouncing it "cott" does a disservice to our town's namesake! The family was prominent in Boston, but divided on the American revolution. To distinguish himself from the loyalist side of the family, William Prescott changed the way he pronounced his family name.
