    Mexican American - Chicana 🤍

  • @AA-zx6nw
    @AA-zx6nw Год назад +9

    I’m Chicano and I’m brown and proud. I wish they would have mentioned the Chicano Movement of the 60s and 70s that mobilized and politicized Chicanos in the United States southwest, and the many accomplishments that were a direct result of the movement.
    It provided Mexicans in the US with an identity that embraced our indigenous ancestry and recognized our complex history. My pops always says the movement declared to the nation that we were just as much Mexican as any Mexican from Mexico and just as much citizen of this country as any white person in America. Therefore, they demanded to be treated with dignity and respect as true “Americans” of this land since our people are from the Americas!
    Chicanos are Mexican and American and we are proud of our rich history which ultimately produced its own unique and distinct Mexican culture and later Chicano culture. Also, another achievement that was a direct result of the Chicano movement was the creation and development of Chicano and Latino Studies departments across the United States. Sadly many Latinos that attend institutions of higher education are unaware that they are standing on the shoulders of those who came before and who literally shed blood, sweat and tears in order to overcome the barriers to higher education so that future Chicanos/Latinos could have the opportunity to attend institutions of higher education.
    In my opinion the term Chicano is still alive and strong. In fact, there are now central and South Americans who identify as Chicana/o because they align with the politicalization of the term.
    Unfortunately, this news piece missed a huge piece of historical information regarding the term Chicano and its political implications. As Sal Castro used to say, “It’s a beautiful day to be a Chicano”

    When I was in middle school I asked my classmate what the difference was bcuz I didn’t know. I thought they were all the same bcuz I’m not from the US. So the history and terminology is not something I had a good understanding of. It was a genuine question that I asked politely and then suddenly the teacher butt in and yelled at me saying it’s not the same thing. I felt rlly terrible and shocked, I was so confused and felt like I had offended someone so greatly. The history teacher didn’t even explain what the difference was. So since middle school I’ve always felt too scared to ask or clarify. In high school though I had a similar situation but my classmate was polite and simply answered the best they could. No one was offended just a respectful convo. Now I realize that my past history teacher just hated Asians, bcuz I would get bullied for my race in class in front of her all the time and she would say nothing. In fact she even allowed it bcuz I was always seated with the racist bullies.

That is a contentious legacy and I do not know how much is smear campaign and how much is true. I look at vids on these great cultures and realize their contributions to our world are HUGE and how some of them may have just not been totally wiped out but are now called another name. The ruthlessness of Aztec and Maya in sacrificing ppl who were not all giddy to be sacrificed does give you pause tho. Again, as depicted on vids on YT.

    Hispanic comes from the Roman name for the Spaniards. Hispanic=Hispanicus from Hispania (Spain)
    Latino is technically Italian. It was used on our people because the language that was forced on us has its roots in the Latin language ex Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian.
    Chicano is more deeper rooted to the indigenous side of our people. Chicano comes from Mexica (Mesheeca/Mecheeca) commonly known as the Aztecs. Which is also where Mexico got it's name. Everything Latin, be it the Latin people , the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Roman ITaly. Latin was the language spoken by the Romans and their culture. In the Americas the Spanish speaking people have taken the term Latin American and made it Latino without knowing what Latin/Latino means and that you cannot take Latin American and make it Latin or Latino or Latina because being Latin means one thing and being Latin American means another. The indigenous past is a very overly misused phrase. As the white Europeans from Spain and Portugal came to America there was already a very small population of indigenous peoples as compared to even the 14th century. Very quickly the European population passed and then vastly outnumbered the indigenous peoples, even by the late the 1500’s. To the point that by the mid 1600’s there was less then 10% of the entire Latin American geography’s population was indigenous, or even could trace roots back to indigenous. That gap only spread further as other peoples, from other European and African nations spread into the population. What some people attempt to do is distance themselves from there Caucasian past as it becomes less popular to claim that culture here.
    Others claim indigenous if there family is traced back to Pre-British, overlooking the fact that even at that time the indigenous population was very, very small.
    For example, my neighbor claims native Mexican ancestry even though all of his ancestors came to America from Spain, all very Caucasian. He states his family has been in America since 1580’s and they only married from within Spanish settlements.
    In short, there are still indigenous peoples, though they make a very small percentage of

We did not have to apply for citizenship wheras they do. We wave the American flag they wave the Mexican flag. It is sad that people need validation of their own skin by labeling themselves. For the ignorant; 1 to 0% of people in the America's do not speak latin. Latins was a dilect spoken by multiple groups in Europe when the Roman empire existed. (No more empire no more language) latin is a dead language only excised in the Roman catholic church by high monarcs. It is funny that in the America's when one calls another Indio people often take it as offensive and demeaning. But this is been ingrained in the people since the conquest. Meztiso "spanish/indians" were labeled as cholos "that was offensive"! Meaning of cholo was a term used to humiliate meztisos simply stating that they were not pure bread spanish. Many meztisos that inherited lighter complexion and colored eyed began to deny there indigenous roots in order to have a better social economical status among the spainsh. This mentality still exist today in the America's yet people don't understand the significance of the mental turmoil that it has created. I will never understand the need for labels which are meaningless and worthless to those who see us as less and or inferior. Education is enriching to the soul. But if labels is what people seek then stay with useless idiologies that only keep us devided. We are one people. Unity equals strength. And who cares as long as your successful and progressing as a people.
