I think there's 2 timelines overlapping: Cloud's arc which follows the original plot with some small changes. Zack's arc where he lives and reaches Midgar with Cloud. Avalanche seems to be dead in this timeline, except for Biggs. Marlene telling Zack of Aerith dying is crossing over from Cloud's timeline. At least that's what im piecing together.

Her death didn't change the objective, nor was it the first person close to Cloud that was killed by him. It's not a neccesary plot device, but I think it will happen again just because it's an iconic event. And there are potential hints and suggestions pointing towards Tifa. In the previous trailer Sephiroth talks about how he killed Tifa before "so who is she?", and in the key art, his sword is pointing towards Tifa and away from Aerith, etc.
Literally the worst thing Sephiroth did was kill Aerith in OG timeline. It allowed her to come in direct contact with the Lifestream to stop Meteor after Holy failed.

In the OG game we could take part on a play in gold saucer theater, if i remember right it was a side thing, like almost all the things we could do in the place but it was reworked just like the honey inn play for this remakes
