Great video! I've been using bulk for spices, flour, and grains for a while. I think most things I buy are less expensive. Now time to transition the paper towels and zip lock bags. Thanks for the info and the inspiration!!!

Instead of paper towels I use washcloths or I cut up old cotton or flannel shirts. They work just the same.

I use a mineral washer ball and 2tsp of detergent for each load. Amazing savings

I’ve never heard of a mineral washer ball. OK now I have to look that up! Thanks so much for sharing!

I hoard jars too. 😄 I hold on to them because less and less products come in glass packaging. I use my jars for everything, love a glass jar. 🌹

lol IT gets out of hand in my house sometimes. Do you have any tips for getting the odor out of lids? I used baking soda but it didn’t do much. Now I’m putting vinegar in the jars, screwing the lid on, then letting them sit upside down for hours. But that still Durant quite do it. So those are the jars I declutter first.

@@BeccaDoesStuffYT I keep the " smelly" ones for canning things like beetroot, pickles or curried greenbeans for these recipes contains similar spices. But a paste of lemon juice and baking soda seem to work for some smells but strong garlic smells tend to stay. Hope you have a blessed weekend. ⚘

I'm not ready to buy the silicone bags yet. We buy our plastic, resealable bags at a restaurant supply store and can get them pretty inexpensively; we often re-wash them for use in the kitchen or garage, craft, and cr@p organization. Some many years ago, we transitioned into primarily glass food storage containers from assorted repurposed and purchased plastic, acrylic, and the like containers; it took a while between life style, cost, and finding what we liked. We generally don't store things in plastic bags in the fridge and I often create chubs of frozen things in glass; although I stuff those frozen chubs down a bread bag separated by atnlesst 2 layer of waxed paper.

Yeah these transitions can take some time. I still have many plastic containers that I’ll keep using until they fall apart. As they break I buy a glass replacement or just do without. And not all swaps I recommend (like silicone bags) will be right for everyone. Some people don’t like silicone bags, wax wraps, etc. I say do what makes sense to you. 👍

There's no way anyone can be perfectly "zero" waste, also I as a non white person living in south Africa I can live my zero waste journey pretty good and I even save money 💰 so I will say was the best thing I ever did.

I agree. I think all we can do is try our best within our means. And if we happen to save money while being low waste, that’s great!

This was super helpful! Thank you for the content😊 I wish i could find a place that has sauce and condiment refills. I am a sucker for condiments and go throught them so quickly!

Thank you! Ha ha ha! Yeah I wish there were a lot more refill options. I think the closest thing I’ve seen to refillable condiments is Loop Store. I heard about it on RUclips videos called “Closing the Loop: The End of Disposable Plastics” by Fortune Magazine and “Loop-Dee-doo, it’s my Loop Store Review!” by someone called Practically Zero Waste Podcast.

Oh, by gosh bulk spices and herbs are almost always cheaper than individual containers. They are even cheaper than the inexpensive dollar store and discount store containers and also many of those larger industrial containers that are/were 8-16 ounces by volume; all of these are undergoing shrinkinflation including those at the restaurant supply store. Pre-2020, we had a Kroger owned chain and also a multi-state, regional chain which sold bulk spices and herbs. Kroger has cited customer COVID-19 concerns for eliminating most to all of thier bulk staples, nuts, grains, candies, spices, et al. The regional chain increased thier bulk offerings of all types and even increased thier "big bag" offerings.
This said, we have what are destination shopping for us, health food stores and a co-op with multiple locations in the area. Even the "organic" and "sustainably harvested" bulk spices and herbs at these places are cheaper by volume than most of the regular spice jar offerings down the grocery aisle. And, pre-pandemic there were three competing spice shops in a near by city with varying qualities of spices from what they called lesser to what I call very nice and very expensive. Still, if you didnt factor in the cost of parking the price of what they called lesser was no more expensive, and often at least a kiss cheaper, per volume than the mid-range jarred spices on a standard grocery shelf. Every so often, you could catch something they called aged on a cadence to clearance price too.
The scary part about bulk spices and herbs is that they are sold by the pound and some can be quite expensive by the pound. Jarred spices sold in the grocery store rack are sold by volume. Most of the expensive spices by the pound in the bulk section are light weight.
