Korean Olympic Giant Asian Pear Nashi Update 2023 P9 | Fruit Trees In My Dad's Backyard Mini Orchard

Korean Giant, also called Dan Bae or Olympic, is one of the best Asian pears hands down. Its round, golden fruits are huge, often weighing 1 pound or more-and they have a flavor to match their size. The extra juicy, crisp fruits are sweet with hints of butterscotch. This is the 9th of the 9 variety in our backyard mini orchard, but the 10th and final video in the series of updates on our Nashi for 2023. The nine variety of our Asian Pear fruit trees are - Atago, Hosui, Kosui, Niitaka, Olympic (Korean Giant), Shinko, Shinseiki (New Century), Shinsui & Yoinashi. We planted them bare roots. If you want to find out how to plant bare root trees please check out our tutorial video on that topic.
Our last updates were on 2017 . The fist set of videos we did on these nashi trees were done in 2013, therefore we could also consider these updates as "ten (10) years later", although the first few trees were planted between 2009-2010. So most of these nashi trees are about 15 years old.

Clearly a four-star variety, this round, large heavily russetted brown Asian pear has a crisp, juicy sweet taste. They're great for slicing and eating fresh and in fruit salads. We like them baked into pies and cobblers. You can enjoy the fruits for a long time, too-they hold their flavor for up to 6 months in storage.
This variety is slightly more winter hardy than most Asian varieties. Olympic is considered one of the best Asian varieties for long term storage. The fruit can be kept in cold storage until March. This highly touted pear blooms early in the season and ripens in mid-October. The tree is vigorous and upright.
Very large, attractive fruit -- orange with russet coat. Crisp, sweet and juicy. Excellent tolerance to fire blight. One of the more cold-hardy nashi. October ripening and has good storage life.
Very large and roundish fruit with firm flesh and a crisp, juicy, sweet taste. Skin is an attractive golden brown russet when ripe. Tree has very vigorous upright growth to large size. Winter hardy and a late harvest. Storage life is 8 to 9 months. One of the best tasting pears and the preferred Korean Asian Pear. Gold medal quality.
MATURITY DATE: OCTOBER 10
Often Asian pears are called apple pears because they are crisp and juicy like apples but with a different and distinctive texture. They also are called salad pears, Nashi (Japanese for "pear"), Oriental, Chinese or Japanese pears (Nihonnashi). All Asian pears today are selected seedlings or crosses made within Pyrus serotina.
The fruits may be smooth and thin-skinned, in colors ranging from moonlight yellow, and yellow-green, to caramel, or they may be russeted shades of these.
