  • Nelson Mandela's legacy will be remebered beyond Africa's borders. Many Indonesians remember him as the man who taught them to make peace. But there is one other thing Indonesians remember Mandela for. His love of traditional shirts known as batik. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Jakarta.

BATIK is from Javanese language AMBA means TO WRITE and TITIK means DOT. BA-TIK means WRITING DOWN A DOT. it could have been derived also from the phrase MBATHIK MANAH : TO DRAW WITH THE WHOLE HEART. Batik is Indonesian traditional textile decorated using hot melted wax and natural dyes. for the wax-resist dyeing art itself, it has existed since 5000-2600 BC. this production technique entered Indonesia archipelago through the merchant from Indian Gujarat. in 6th-8th CENTURY the Batik textile has grown up and developed in Indonesia. it was restricted for use to Royalty and Nobility especially in Java Island. from then on, this cultural has been passed on from generation to generation till TODAY. and in around 12th century, CANTING (TJANTING = Javanese word means SIBUR KECIL or PENCEDOK AIR) was invented in Java. from the history, the definition, the implementation... BATIK has been proved that it is originally from INDONESIA. that is why UNESCO has added BATIK to the LIST OF UNESCO'S INTANGIBLE HERITAGE OF HUMANITY in 2009.
