Hi Allan just as bad here in. LUTON, just picked up my New rig version 4 ss9900 and hopefully be putting it on as soon as I get Ariel up, cheers Allan.
I think if i put an antenna on the other side of the building I might hear more of the guys in Nuneaton, bit not sure id get away with it , just nothing heard at all. :-(
Hello,we used 8 channel Icom 446 radios on the farm in conjunction with CB.....furthest i copied was my daughter hilltop to the attic room of where she lived about 28 miles ... around here its garden centres and a few occasional users and funnily enough a school about five miles from me ....i put a call out on ch 8 occasionally but very quiet.....from Weald of Kent.
Lots of activity on Sunday evenings. Worked Stoke on Trent and Blackpool from the coast at Dublin in good conditions. Answered a call on ch8 from the isle of man just this week.
At the moment general radio communications such as PMR & CB isn't busy , but in the future if anything happens with global affairs & the phone & internet goes down the PMR & CB will come back to life .
Hi Al, yes pmr is very little used in Cov, although many have got pmr radio's locally, I have got two pmr radio's for car and walkie talkie but very seldom hear anyone despite putting calls out, enjoyed the vid mate.
There are Facebook groups that organise Sunday night nets. Don't expect much in poor weather even at good locations. Conditions make a huge difference beyond a few miles.
Yeah maybe it was just a passing phase, but it does well up on a hill antenna to antenna, 67 miles ive manged a few years ago and that was just on a UV5R.
@@Al.26TC101 yeah covid times was very busy we did try to keep it going...yep a passing phase.. I did hit Holland and the South Coast from here when the conditions were good but that was a few years ago now.
Informative video Al .. no experience with pmr and wondering if it would be worth picking one up to try out here in sandwell.. keep up the good work and 73s
Hello Allan , thank you for sharing . Those small mag mount twig antennas are not good & should be disposed of . The Sirio CX440 is the best PMR antenna with a guaranteed SWR of 1.1 rest assured , you'll bless the day , you'll somehow need to adapt it for mobile use , it is a small antenna so it shouldn't be difficult . The Anytone radio will cook up on full power or any other power come to that , their not good on PMR 446 as the transistors overdrive on that frequency , a cooling fan should be used at all times & ideally it should be used on low power . I hope that above has been of some help .
Thank you for the info, always happy to hear what others have to say as I'm no expert, but do love the radio as a really fun hobby no matter what freq is used. So cheers.
Hi Allan just a quick one I found a free APP , called a Midland cB TALK APP, and you get a map and you can see were people are. And a radar I think it goes up to 200 miles away. So for free you can’t go wrong. Thanks again for your work and please take care of yourselves and see you soon Alan from Luton 🇬🇧😱👍
Chhers bud think its online only as far as i know and i use zello which is pretty similer , but not something i uase alot , but ill certainly check it out and have a look. :-)
The southern PMR 446 network is still going, 6 years+ now chaired by Mr Ray CT2290 from Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. Channel 14 from 20:00 local. When the tropo is nice and high, the net can be heard for miles up north. But like you said, 446 range in normal circumstances is less than line of sight. As for PMR in Brighton, it's dead as a dodo. Apart from Monday nights when the PMR Network is on, a good few people head out for it including myself on occasion :) all the best Al, 73'
@@Al.26TC101 What a plonker I am... I forgot to give the day lol. Monday nights, every week from 8pm local time... rain or shine, the Chairman is out beaming all around for the network.

Do keep in mind coax is exponentially more important on UHF PMR-446 compared to HF, LMR400 a a minimum (RG8 or 213 will not be appropriate), otherwise you will be affecting both the receive and transmit significantly.
Any recommendations on the coax to be used, although it won't make it any more lively here in Coventry, but better to have decent coax and try. Would ultra flex 7 be good to use ? Thank you
RG213 is fine, unless you're using 50m plus in length. I use 10m RG213 on 70cm with hardly any loss, compared to expensive coax. 23cm is a different matter.
No that won't make a difference and I did mess around making sure it was set up properly. Just a bad antenna. I'll get something else, think they are cheap enough. Cheers
That thin coax going to that magmount is VERY lossy at 446MHz you need to use very low loss coax on UHF. Also those dual band antennas are not that good on UHF you would do better with a proper monoband resonant antenna. 73 Al
Wheres its busy, it's kids playing music and swearing.. we are using ch 14 (dx) for long distance 40/50 miles north French coast in tropo /prop .... 8 08 net on Sunday evenings Ch 8 ,8 pm should get busier at weekends as people get out on the hills with their new Quansheng,s lol... Alan, I not used it for few years. When I moved to Leicestershire I remember lots of activity around the local area. I was using a Baofeng UV5R with stock antenna it was working well up to 8 miles. I must say it seemed better when it was just 8 channels. Ch8 was always reserved for calling. Unfortunately 70 cm ham band also very quiet. Not sure what any of the bands will be like in another 5 years.
Yeah its a shame, well I will certainly still be playing on radio for many years even when the solar cycle fades, there is still stuff happening. Cheers.
I haven’t bothered with PMR for a bit will give it another go on a Sunday when it’s hot, we need ringway and Kirby to hype it on RUclips
Will have to try for a contact again bud, be good to see if I can still make it down to you.
