The whole lost luggauge market is DISGUSTING to me. Instead of give stuff back to people, airports are wanting to sell them off to idiotic weirdos willing to buy it. They do everything they can & they can't just stockpile stuff in a lost and found until someone locates it over & over after years. If people don't come back to get their sh*t it ain't their fault for selling it off. The United States postal service does this to with "lost packages", unclaimed or returned & the returner doesn't want it either.

I do wonder if some of the luggage being sold is one that someone called the airport about and it didn’t come up until later maybe by that time ppl forgot who made that call. Maybe someone forgot to write that down somewhere. What if it’s a situation where they are in contact with the person but while transporting the luggage it keeps getting lost. In that situation the person is trying to get it back but isn’t able to bc the airport(s) keep messing up, then it’s labeled as someone not coming back for it.

I don't really think it's that hard to track down the owner? I mean there are papertags issued by the airline wrapped/pasted on the checked luggages? I'm sure you can somehow track down the original owners if the airline tries hard enough. The responsibility lies on the airlines from the start, even after the owners reported the lost luggages, because it's the airlines that lose the luggages. So they should definitely do everything to give the luggages back to the rightful owners (without expecting any compensation). Like no one is travelling and misplacing their checked luggages.
It's the fact that there is a way to make money by selling lost luggages - more so especially now as this becomes a trend on tiktok, more people are gonna buy it for a few minutes of short videos (like how when thrift stores were gentrified because it became a trend to do thrift hauls online) - which encourages the airlines to not try hard enough to reach out the owners. I'm sure with this trend becoming a thing, the airline won't even wait a few months to sell the "lost" luggages (I would even go so far as to say they will purposely lose the luggages).

If you can fit everything you need in just a carry-on + personal item then I would recommend that anyway, as it saves so much time in the airports and ensures that you have your stuff on time (depends on the airport but I've had times where I had to wait in line for an hour to check-in my luggage, and times where I had to wait 2 hours at the luggage belt to get my stuff. I've also had a suitcase get lost before that was delivered to me 4 days after I landed...). It was only the smaller budget airlines that charged extra. Now the major airlines do it too. It doesn’t surprise me that they charge for lost luggage now too. I remember about 12 years ago I was living in Korea and travelling back from visiting family in the UK over Christmas. My case was almost 2 kilos overweight yet miraculously I wasn’t charged. Then it got lost in Helsinki (where my connecting flight was). Two days later it was delivered to my flat in Seoul. I wasn’t charged anything. I dread to think how much it would cost if that happened now (especially with the case being way over the weight limit).

The greyhound put my suitcase on the wrong bus as I was moving to a new state during the pandemic, and my ex at the time promised me he was keeping in contact with them to pick it back up. He lied and after holding it for a week the greyhound station told me that they sent my things off to their warehouse in Texas. I did a lot of work to see how possible it would be to get my suitcase back, I had a pair of jeans that I painted, vintage clothes that belonged to my great grandmother, many gifts and my favorite wigs in addition to a painting that a friend made for me a few years ago that I vowed to hang in my first apartment. I remember when I saw the first lost luggage vlog on RUclips a few weeks ago, and even though it wasn't my luggage I cried. I know it seems silly but sometimes people have everything they own at the time in their suitcases and to know that someone can just buy it to sift through for content is so heartbreaking and weird.

So I talked to security at my departing depot and they said that was stupid and there was no reason for them to remove an undercarriage bag for a knife. I never got that bag back. The second time my luggage went missing was a much worse experience and it almost ended in me smashing windows and causing a scene. I will never trust greyhound again.

There is a process. They don't just dump the latest lost luggage into an auction. At least if it's posted online the owners have a chance of seeing it.
I think people think the airlines don't try and connect with the original owners at all and they just sell it to make a profit. Corporations are greedy, but they don't need the extra $100 they can make off of someone's lost luggage. They would probably rather send it to the owner. I’m glad that sometimes this helps ppl find their lost luggage. It does make me think if someone was able to randomly come across a TikTok video with their luggage and give it back then how did the airport fail at that same task. Was it the airport that didn’t get in contact as soon as they should’ve even if it was a mistake, did it take forever to find the luggage and the person no longer made any calls and accepted it was gone, did they only call one airport if they had connecting flights and was there one that never heard abt the luggage being missing, or did the person never show up. There are so many possibilities and I’m surprised that the airport was never able to get in contact. They likely would’ve figured out that if there is luggage that was left then it was likely lost by someone. Do they try to get in contact with the person if they can. Most the time there are tags with someone’s name on it and surely they could look that up in the system to get the person’s information.

It has nothing to do with the app. These people have been doing this before tiktok was a thing and they will continue doing it because the airlines do it. Storage wars was a very very popular show yeaaaars before Tiktok was a thing. The concept of buying people's lost or abandoned stuff isn't new. If they weren't doing it on tiktok, they'd do it on Instagram and probably already have and they'd be doing it on RUclips and probably already have. The app isn't forcing people to buy unclaimed luggage. It just gives the people that were already buying it an outlet for attention. There are plenty of good people on tiktok that are doing good things for the community and educating people or just posting their art. The tiktokers posting these lost luggage hauls are a minority and it has nothing to do with the app making him do that. RUclips is filled with Temu and Shein hauls. If I had never gotten it back and instead someone else showed it off on TikTok I would be devastated. The items in these suitcases aren't just "someone's lost things" they are part of that person's journey in life and we can never know how much these items mean or what importance they hold outside of their material use. The first issue that rises is sometimes you don't get on the same flight as your luggage. So lets say your flight is canceled, but the one your luggage is on... isn't canceled... Well that sucks! This happened to my husband and I to travel on a cruise. Our flight ended up canceled, and we learned, with great horror, that our bag was already part way to our final destination. The hoops we had to jump through... Getting to a different airport, finding out our luggage went to a different airport in a different state, driving there, waiting 2 hours for our luggage to arrive, hoping and praying it was going to... all before we were to get on a cruise, without any of our clothes!! Thankfully my husband is a stubborn man who is tenacious when it comes to hunting down the right representative with things.

There is something deeply immoral in airlines selling lost luggage for profit. It puts them in a weird position where it seems to benefit the company to lose your bags. I also would absolutely not buy some lost suitcase unless it was with their intention of trying to reunite it with its owner. And I certainly wouldn't do it withiut wearing protective clothing. I saw a docu on the lost luggage store a couple years ago, and when they sort through them they have to wear PPE.
I also don't always trust that the people doing these "hauls" have genuinely bought one of the suitcases, but rather have staged it themselves...especially when clothes come out looking pristine.
This remonded me about a thing I remember hearing about, when someone who put an gps tag of some kind in their case when travelling then got their bags misplaced. The airline gave them the run around, but it was supposed to be being couriered to them (i think it was at their hotel). It didn't turn up. More run around. The bag owner checked the gps data and it showed the suitcase was at a residential addresss in their city, and it didn't move for days. They ended up going there and found dozens of suitcases piled up. I think the police were called in and there was a whole thing but they did get their bag back. The airline said the "courier" was stealing the cases. It was allreally weird.

I dont have a problem with people buying lost luggage, we're curious beings after all and it's definitely a better option that just throwing the luggage into trash. What I do have a problem with is why it's a business in the first place and why those items aren't just donated or recycled. Or, you know, why the airlines don't do their jobs in the first place or improve the whole luggage system.

From some comments they have said that the airlines wait a while before selling the luggage which is kinda the least they can do when they mess up and loose luggage. If the airlines had a better system in place to prevent them from losing luggage then maybe they wouldn’t have luggage pile up and feel the need to sell it. Someone’s luggage is so much responsibility and so many airlines truly don’t care at all what happens to the bag

At the end of the day I did It and I got my stuff back ;D

I have always wondered, if these poor people actually see their luggage being opened and criticized for some views. How would these "influencers" feel if THEIR luggage was bought LMAO. Thank you SO much, I love your viewpoint on this. It reminds us of how the innocent victims would see this situation. Honestly, I agree, these people who have lost their luggage are victims. Also I have to say, I worked at a resort for many years. The very wealthy that would come to stay were literally the cheapest. They were the ones that would go to lost and found to find a pair of gloves. They rarely tipped. If I had a dollar for every time we got a call because one of them left something in their room. Generally, these calls were for things that the rest of us, would just repurchase. I found it ironic, when they were around their piers they would be high rollers, tipping like crazy, picking up checks, and overall just throwing money around. However, when it came down to private, they would pinch every single penny LMAO.

I think showing off the person’s stuff (especially undies and bras) is definitely weird asl and gross. But I think we should really be placing the blame on the airports 🤷🏽‍♀️ they need to change their policies. They should be responsible for getting people their stuff back and not just waiting around for them to show up. Like send that shit to their house idk (ik it’s probably just people not wanting to do their jobs tho, it seems like it’s pretty common in most industries)

    • @maem7462
      @maem7462 Месяц назад +6

Exactly and if the airport had better ppl and policies and practices in place for not losing someone’s stuff then they wouldn’t have a lot of luggage piling up. I get that sometimes ppl lose something around the airport or in whatever place. There is no way there are this many ppl that skip looking for their bags at the luggage carousel . The amount of luggage airports manage to loose is insane. I get that they have a schedule and have to be efficient and fast but it seems that it causes more inefficiency bc they keep having to track down someone’s luggage and return it or wait for someone to get there.

This isn’t a luggage story but similar. I used to do my laundry at the local laundry mat. I went to go pick up my 2 HUGE loads of laundry (they have really big washers and dryers so the loads are enormous) Well I got there to pick up all of my laundry to find it was all gone. No one at the laundry mat saw anyone and the manager was no help. So I just had to go out and buy new clothes after spending almost $40 at the laundry mat. I still think about my clothes even 2 years after. Then my ex stole all my clothes a year after that… So yea having personal things taken from you is extremely hard and you will always remember your items that went missing. I still look for some of my old clothing and then remember or realize that it’s now gone forever.

My dad lost a bag once when we went to Hawaii to visit my uncle, and they told us that he will have to check a few times a day because they dont contact the people whos bags they have, they rely on the customer reaching out to them. This was a long time ago, but i dont see why it would change. So many bags are lost or unclaimed, every airport would need a handful of employees who do nothing but try to contact bag owners.

I have suddenly gained a new understanding of why my oldest two siblings, after loosing their luggage three times between them, are now so insistent about keeping their possessions to just carry-ons. Only my brother ever really travels out of the country and it's usually just to Aus or Britain, so they can both get away with it (or just flat out refusing and taking on a few days to use the inter-island ferry and work around that, in my sister's case), but hot damn. Never even considered this as a thing, but I've also never traveled by plane before.
